A couple of years ago, I managed to find a copy of This is Animation: Macross Vol. 2 (the red one shown here) for around (I think) $15 on eBay. It was in great condition too.

Exactly! In the US, there really isn't much consistency among LE agencies. Our local sheriff's office and (I think) the PD both use .40 S&W. For the rest of the world, .40 S&W and the other obscure calibers are very rarely used compared to 9mm (even .45ACP is much less common). Most foreign militaries use 9mm too. This becomes quite an advantage for the international MW members/flu zombie survivors. For those of us in the States, any ammo we can find is a good caliber.

That's true. Since Bandai is also making toys that aren't from M7 or MF (and Yamato is about to release a valk from M7), there's no telling how things may have changed with licensing. We can only speculate.

I think it's especially appropriate for this thread, so I've got to say it: "Holy thread necromancy, Batman!"

This topic has really been derailed. I don't see the connection between "Swine flu," zombies, and Macross toys. Wait--I take that back. I get it now! This flu must cause people to become half man/half pig zombies; and the old chunky monkeys, with the pointy noses, are the perfect anti-zombie stabbing weapons. That must be it! Maybe we should start a new thread on this counter-zombie scenario. It could be quite entertaining. I second the 9mm Glocks (17/19/34) for a sidearm. Simple and reliable, with a high ammo capacity (I admire your taste, Graham). 9mm is used by NATO and many law enforcement agencies, so it would be easy to find some on old zombie battlefields. Plus you can carry a lot more of it with you. 9mm has been killing the living for many years--I don't know why it wouldn't work on the undead. Glocks do have a safety: you. As long as you aren't careless with the muzzle, and you keep your finger off the trigger until you're going to shoot, the lack of a manual safety isn't an issue. Secondly, when a Glock is "cocked", it's actually just halfway cocked. When you pull the trigger, it completes the cock and then releases the striker. There are also safety features that make it darn near impossible for the Glock to discharge (even if it's dropped) without pulling the trigger. I could go on, but stuff like this probably belongs in the weapons thread.

IIRC, I believe Graham had mentioned that if Yamato were to make a valk that was too close to a model kit, they could run into licensing issues. Even if it isn't painted, they start to walk a fine line. Now that they are releasing the fan racer, things may have changed though.

That's quite true; but a good print, in a quality theater is still a common occurrence. Furthermore, this doesn't take into account D-Cinema (Yes, old movies are shown in this format occasionally). In my opinion, one of the reasons CG looks so awful is partially due to the framerate. If viewed on the proper display, I've found CG to be a little less jarring. Then there is the psychological effect. Sometimes people have a tendency to look for the flaws. With a large high resolution display it is much easier to spot the little flaws in a movie when you focus on them. Repeated viewings would only increase this problem. I think the whole issue has been blown out of proportion. Just because you suddenly notice a wire or something doesn't mean the movie is now ruined.

I'm obsessive-compulsive, so I improvements in picture quality--even if they are minute--are very important to me. I believe the third movie in the set is a new transfer, but I'm not 100% sure. Some movies really do benefit from the increase in detail. If it didn't bother you in the theater, chances are the Blu-ray version won't ruin the movie. Your average 35mm film still has a higher resolution and more color detail than the current HDTV standards. The only complaint I had about the first T1 release was the lack of a proper mono track. I don't remember having any issues with the picture quality (T2 on the other hand...). I did't feel like importing T2, so I'll probably pick up the local double-dip here. Gladiator? Looks like there's one more movie for me to get...

You can get the whole trilogy for around $55 on Amazon. You may even be able to find it cheaper on eBay.

I've been so busy lately that I haven't been following the latest Blu-ray developments. From my limited understanding, T1 is just a repackaging of the old release; T2 on the other hand is supposedly a new master. T2 has been released in so many different versions on the various formats, I've lost count. Laserdisc had around six different releases, IIRC. Batman (1989), Goldfinger, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, This is Spinal Tap, Pulp Fiction, Braveheart, and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (Theatrical versions) are some new releases I'm anticipating. They're supposedly going to release some of the Alien movies as well. What are the films that will make you take the big leap to HD--Other than Star Wars and Indiana Jones?

Since the 30th anniversary of Alien is this year, new video games are being developed and Dark Horse is coming out with new comics, I thought a thread like this would be appropriate. Did anybody check out the Free Comic Book Day Aliens/Predator preview issue? New Aliens and Predator comics; it's like I'm six all over again.

Those two lines you saw may have been due to the monitor being a Trinitron. For Trinitrons, this is actually normal. Mine has them as well. I've heard that X-Arcade sticks are overpriced; however, I haven't had any major issues with mine. -

I can't wait to play this game. Even if the gameplay isn't any good, at least the story should still be pretty strong. Any word on an demo? -
Worst Science Fiction Film of All Time
VT 1010 replied to JELEINEN's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Get the Quadriliogy and watch the special edition. Although it still doesn't compare to the first two, it is a much better film than the theatrical version. You should also watch the documentary on it; it gave me a lot more respect for it. I still think it was way better than Resurrection. It certainly could have been worse (wood planet anyone?). As for the worst of all time, I wonder what's playing on the Sci Fi channel right now... -

I started learning Japanese from a couple of private tutors for about a year. Then I took a college Japanese class for a semester when I was in high school. I got a 4.0 GPA in that class, but it's been so long I have forgotten a lot of it. I can remember most of the kana and some phrases, but that's about it. I'll probably take another class next spring. I'll probably need to brush up before then. I'm legitimately impressed when native English speakers can speak good English.

Should I read the Watchmen before seeing the movie?
VT 1010 replied to David Hingtgen's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I had this debate myself. I ended up finishing the book a week ago. The movie is supposed to have some changes and a different ending anyway (and I don't know what they are), so there will still be some surprises. And if it sucks, then there's always the hope that the Director's Cut with the Tales of the Black Freighter added will make up for the theatrical version. -

I have a BD-ROM (I didn't realize it wasn't a writer until after I got it) and it doesn't take that long to load a movie. It does take a little longer to load than a DVD, but the difference is minimal. When it come to burning DVDs, that all depends on the speed you select to burn the disc. When it comes to DVDs, a Blu-ray drive is just like your average DVD drive. I wouldn't worry about getting another DVD burner. -

This was a FALSE rumor months ago. Aliens:CM has NOT been canceled. It's still being developed. In addition, a new AVP game is being developed as well. The Aliens RPG on the other hand has been canceled. -

There is a cable Microsoft makes for the 360 that lets you use TOSLINK or 2 channel analog with HDMI. I'm not sure what cheaper alternatives are available for HDMI. If your monitor supports an analog VGA connection, you can use the VGA adapter which also has the same sound output options. Also, keep in mind you may need a receiver, amp, or TV to hear any sound since most monitors don't have speakers.
