Super Macross Mecha Fun Time Discussion Thread!
TehPW replied to Valkyrie Driver's topic in Movies and TV Series
yes, someone who is into civilian model flying planes created mockups of the VF-1... but that still does replicate the real thing... with all the bells whistles that Seto mentioned, these miniature planes still dont fully replicate the flight. No front slats no proper flaps that extend, no aspects in how those upper inlets affect flight (do they actually close in flight?) these are concepts i wonder if anyone has done in Wind Tunnels? I look over my shoulder to a anime wall scroll i bought back when i was working/living the Ventura area in the early 2000s, of a VF-1J looking at it from the Pilots 5 oclock (sans the UNSPACY Kite) and that art IS flying... IDK. I guess I'm having Old fart moments... -

I'm having a lazy Saturday night, my wife & minion & The Pants are out & about and I'm listening to random and subscribed YT stuff, when I'm not playing DDO. This YT is renown for his F-14 RIO knowledge and tonight's topic on when the F-14 program got DFCS installed made me think: Has anyone done a proper, actually took the time to think 'Can It Fly?' look at the VF-1 (maybe the VF-0, which looks more like a design that would fly... like a brick) on DCS or similar? I'm not talking video games, which do NOT replicate flight characteristics (just X/Y/Z axis on a static image) but the various popular flight sims that gained traction and functionality in the past 5 years...? -

Tell us about your avatar, name, etc.
TehPW replied to Pontus's topic in MW Site News & Member Feedback
My name... My Avatar... Well the Avatar is easy. The story has NOTHING to do with Macross Frontier's Female #2. It's the album cover of one of F2's Discography and at the time, I thought it was "cool". I suppose I could replace it with something more modern but *shrug* I'm too lazy at this point in my life... The Name... requires some travel time in the Way Back Machine... The time is 1999, the place is Webcity Cybercafe (It no longer exists) and the Game is Unreal Tournament. Now up till that point, I probably had a few different Handles for the three BIG FPS games that came to be from DOOM: Quake (series), Duke Nukem 3D and UT. Of all three, the most, best memories I have, is from Unreal Tournament. For those who weren't even Born Yet, those game were your parent's bread and butter. During one particularly and delightfully violent session of CTF-Facing Worlds, my friend changed his handle several times, settling on the simple and beloved: Cow. I, feeling the need to comeuppance, did the same. I initially settled on Pensive. Now, Pensive holds a place in history (to some); Pensive was a patron of JACS Cybercafe (also long non-existent) who's handle was Pensive. You have to ask him what the back story was and I was not privy to that. But he was a good citizen, kind hearted and yet annoying AF if you played against him (expert at Online Chess) so I always remembered his handle. Now If you are familiar, Facing Worlds is a very simple design for a Capture The Flag map. I specialized in a very effective Troll by Camping the topside Teleport with my Impact Hammer. Because the results were typically giblets of former enemy players, I had an Apiffany and changed my handle to the name that I retain to this day (but rarely use now): Pensive's Wetness(tm) My current handle is merely the result of age and maturity (nothing more). I hope my name brings smiles of remembrance (or maybe ulcers; I wasn't always a nice person to my foes) Anyway. Derp. -

had Macross SFDM-TV came out around or after first run of Neon Genesis Evangelion, with that concept that the GU-11 was considered overkill in certain situations, one wonders if the makers of SDFM-TV would have borrowed the idea of weapons lockers placed in locations within Macross City, equipped with weapons useable by Valkyries and Spartans (weapons that have real-world versions of Sub Machine Guns or similar? actually since both MF and Delta has come out at a time that the youth involved in those series would have seen NGE, was that ever a thing (weapon caches in the cities)? -

There's a problem with a bigger VF-1 (Maybe I've mentioned this in the past?). That's means you need bigger ships. The main reason all the VF's are referred as Fighter Aircraft (and the people who crew them as 'Pilots' or Aviators) is because of the method in how they are deployed. Otherwise, we might as well call Hikaru, a Battroid Pilot... or 'Mechwarrior (LOL). -
Random thought: This looks more like the VF-2SS as I look at this (like if the VF-2SS came out first then as a prequel, the VF-1J Dox?)
-
I agree with everyone else on this (Hard Pass) but the differences also make me think that the makers (and probably Harmony Gold, since they would have to sign off on this) took a cue from Cataylist Game Labs's propose to the Reseen art work for Battletech. Think about it, a moment. HG can't use any of the original art designs for SDFM-TV or DYRL. Is this HG's means to get around that? Or I am just looking at this wrong? Personally, I'm not sure if that was the goal (CGL's goal was to be able to use designs similar to the classic unseen but not exact/improved upon, which is why they succeed because Battletechs fans are mostly like 'Project Phoenix whut?' when it comes to PP designs to the current art used in the current post kickstarter era we are in).

Son? Come over here. I, Said. Come. Over. HERE. *Drags you over here, BY your ear* *Reminds the Yout why being Gen-X, a Veteran & Retiree, is combination to be Feared* Actually no, I'd probably F up my back trying to drag him/her over so I'll just do the safe thing and flip him off, call him names, something less physical...

Facebook Lets pay honors to this version of the YF-19 (makes me weep; I have not the time or skill or funding to even consider buying it) Now, questions... It's been forever since the YF and VF-19's have been out and the first thing that catch's my eye is those 4 circles behind the head unit. There are no danger markings to indicate otherwise but what are they? Intakes for the back mounted torso motors typically seen in some fashion to provide propulsion in Gerwalk mode? Venier thrusters? They ARE the exhaust for the propulsion unit. They are also different (less refined?) than seen on Macross -7's production model...

Although much of the imagery from IC is semi-cringe, its also very detailed. In this video, it has two Armored VF-1Js and two different models of Legioss (in Soldier Mode). The Legioss's look like large power armor in scale. Are the legioss smaller than a VF?

...Because nobody else has said it... WELCOME. (Please don't be like Brofessor... what-ever-the-F that mutant is.) Seto, already said, Gundum is to Japan, like Barbie (maybe, Mickey Mouse, is a better example) is to the US. Anything else is generally a miracle in terms of merchandizing. What exactly is your interest in anime merchandizing? Is this a numbers thing or a Stock Market interest?

... The one BELOW the caption you posted (You are awesome, simply by captioning that imagine of #2, For the Record) Its the SIDE view of the expansion, explaining the arms, how they rotate.
-
ðŸ¤Let me be specific: I'm talking about the side view (below #2). From Left to Right, it would be the second notation (but the first one under the side profile) I'm gonna guess its NOT landing gear but something dealing with the Transformation pivot point?
-
Lets make some assumptions, based on what we do know about the VF-1 (in regards to its landing gear in the leg nacelles), as well as the VF-2SS (which does have line art including landing gear) 1) the Gears on its mains probably deploy the same way (and direction) as the VF-1 2) Look closely in the picture provided (TU for that). There is a panel line directly underside of the cockpit. Its directly underside and long enough to suggest much. I would suspect that is the hatch for the nose gear. Also what does the Kanji say on the notice that is placed on the first underside notation (from Left to Right)?
-
Maybe the LACK of development falls in line with the perceived Malas or Blah that was apparent (especially in the manner the UN Spacy conducts their first engagements with the Marduk). The commander in charge of that battle looked... for a better word, Bored. To me, now that i think about things, that seems so unlikely but back in 1992-3, when I first watched MII:LA, that's how I viewed the politics of the story. If the UN Spacy has been either destroying or outright subverting random Zentradi forces with ease, the urge to be on the cutting edge, probably dulled (if there wasn't any profit in it, at that point). What was the story about this kit? It wasn't made by an authorized vendor, was it? (the lack of details underside bothered me, in those pics)
-
There is no details on linage of the 2J and 2S series (outside of line art from the two games that exist in the LA timeline, to my knowledge) so, unlike after series (I'm looking at frontier mainly with the YF-24 -> VF-25 but the VF-0 -> VF-1 applies as well), its really in the realm of fandom (especially, when the production of LA did nothing to follow through) of which came first: The Chicken or the Egg... when you look at the line art for the VF-2JA, just how much of the VF-1's DNA do we see? I ask that because we see nothing of the VF-4 in any of the LA Mechanicals...

I could take your comment several ways... but I'll be the adult here and just let it pass (because explaining my comment to you will take time and effort, that I am unwilling to spend!) Ok, because the urge is Overwhelming... My point was that, by using my personal experiences in military aviation, as well as my love of all things Macross, I had hoped to improve someone else's efforts (Not belittle them, as your scathing retort was). But thanks for expressing your opinion on a public forum! I will accept your apology in PM form...
