  1. One final comparison between the different 1/144 Gundam GP01 kits. From left: Original kit (1991), Real Grade (2013), HGUC (2000).
  2. Once again, we must wonder why Randy Orton still has a job in the WWE.
  3. In that case, how about pig's blood stew? Or everyone's favorite, duck embryo?
  4. For Tokyo dining, I highly recommend Curry House CoCo Ichibanya (several locations all over Japan), Asakusa Imahan (Taito-ku, home of the best sukiyaki in the world), and Tucano's Grill (Akihabara and Shibuya, great Brazilian Churrascaria). If you're into Gunpla, the best places are Yodobashi Camera and Bic Camera, as they sell Gunpla and some anime toys at up to 30% off retail. Odaiba is also a great place to visit, especially with the Gundam statue in front of Diver City. Gundam Front Tokyo sells Gunpla and other merchandise at retail (sorry, no tourist tax exemptions), but they have tons of exclusive goodies you won't find anywhere else. If you're allowed an extra day or two, take a train to Shizuoka Prefecture and do some of your shopping at Gotemba Premium Outlets.
  5. As all the Oscar talk is focused on The Revenant, I got around to watching Birdman. It's evident why Alejandro G. Iñárritu deserves all the praise. The editing and cinematography are so well-made that it's virtually a single camera shot throughout the entire film until its climax. The minimalist jazz drums really add to the hostile acting environment. And Michael Keaton really delivers his best performance ever, from his monologues as his alter-ego to the way he handles a local theater critic. Props also to Edward Norton, as he practically portrays himself in the film, given his real-life reputation with other producers and directors. Next month, I'll be watching The Revenant. If it's really as good as everyone says, then Iñárritu may be the first director in the modern era to score two consecutive Oscars - an achievement that hasn't been done since 1950.
  6. Anime Abandon kicked off this year with a review of this series. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9UmGFav_Z0
  7. Building this old kit brings me back to when I previously assembled it over 20 years ago. Yes, it sucks by today's standards (even by 1991 standards, as the Char's Counterattack and Gundam 0080 lines offered more colored parts), but it lets you appreciate how far Bandai's gone to evolving their Gunpla line. I haven't pre-painted parts of this magnitude in a long time. For the shield, I masked the center areas; I'll do some further cleanup later on. For the foot parts, I panel lined the borders before painting the lower portions red. And here's the assembled product before undergoing any further touchups. As the provided sticker sheet is pathetic, I used a waterslide decal of the "01" from the MG Gundam 0083 sheet (Gundam Decal #24). And here it side-by-side with the HGUC version. I'd also include the RG version, but that's simply unfair. Besides, it's not done being stickered. In short, unless you're really into vintage Gunpla kits or you're a big fan of the GP01, don't bother with this one. Get the HGUC or RG version instead.
  8. It is one's Destiny to make this an Impulse buy. Robot Spirits: ZGMF-X56S/θ Destiny Impulse Gundam

  10. More fun with Emo Kylo Ren: "dear diary the substitute math teacher kept calling me "rilo kiley" it was upsetting hux says he is an untermensch I guess we are talking" -- "i was not crying in the shower i just realized how i'll never get to meet darth vader and then soap got in my eye" -- "dear diary hux is lending me his copy of endor's game he says he has never related to a protagonist so much i like it just okay" -- "current status: if there's a bright center to the universe i'm on the planet that it's farthest from" --
  11. And the #1 entrant for this Sunday's Royal Rumble is...
  12. Lazer Team is a sci-fi comedy film produced by Rooster Teeth (RWBY, Red vs. Blue) and is a result of a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign (collecting pledges of US$2.4 million against a campaign target of US$650,000). In the film, four friends stumble upon an alien battle suit and find themselves in a dilemma when they split the suit among themselves. Reviews for the film have been surprisingly positive: "If you want to see the greatest cinematic usage of the jerk-off hand motion (to date), watch Lazer Team. It’s a bit of satirical sci-fi comedy that only the guys at Rooster Teeth can dream up, given a strong love for egregious dick jokes and non-stop references to Independence Day." - Matt Donato, We Got This Covered "3 super-robotic burritos out of 5. Lazer Team might not be a non-stop laugh-a-minute type of movie, but taken as a low-budget, high-energy, quick-witted homage to the best in 1980s matinee movies, it manages to be a pretty good time." - Scott Weinberg, Nerdist "3 1/2 out of 5 skulls. Comical, surprisingly intelligent, and entertaining, Lazer Team is a movie that’s worth watching, and stands a step above other popcorn flicks of its nature. Although the formula is somewhat predictable, and the plot admittedly pretty silly, the film still manages to be a success, based partially on a script that provides some interesting notes on today’s individualistic-driven generation, and the raw power that comes from good old teamwork." - Kalyn Corrigan, Bloody Disgusting Lazer Team premieres in select U.S. theaters on January 27. 13. Where he calls Gina Carano "not-so-angry Rosie O'Donnell" instead of "Jose Canseco"? This is essentially the first trailer, but with Japanese subtitles. I'm surprised the Japanese didn't add any extra footage.
  14. You could try eBay, as older kits often show up over there.
  15. This is my next project: a vintage 1991 NG 1/144 Gundam GP01. Even by 1991 standards, this Gunpla is crap (only the GP02A from this era is worse). Just like most Gunpla kits from the 1980s and early 1990s, this is easy to assemble, but painting is absolutely necessary. Articulation is decent, but be very careful with those peg joints - the right knee on my old GP02A snapped off after 20 years in storage. The upside is that it only cost me less than US$10. It gives me an opportunity to practice my painting and masking skills, and it makes a great comparison piece to the HGUC and RG versions. Here's HGUC GP01's reaction when I came home with the box.
  16. Ex Machina has two Academy Award nominations: Best Original Screenplay Best Visual Effects It's pretty much the underdog on both categories. On Best Original Screenplay, it's competing with Bridge of Spies, Inside Out, and Straight Outta Compton. And the Visual Effects category is dominated by The Revenant, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Martian, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
