The Evil Monster Mansion (1988) "Rider...KIIIIICKKKKK!!!" Lowdown Kamen Rider - for over 30 years, the name has been one of the largest superhero franchises in Japan (second only to Ultraman). The brainchild of legendary manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori (1938-1998), each Kamen Rider series tells the tale of a motorcycle-riding cyborg (except for Amazon, who is a reptile-man) battling an evil organization that uses an army of kaijin (mutated freaks) on their bid for world domination. Kamen Rider has made such an impact in Japan to the point where high-profile anime and manga creators like Yoshiki Takaya (The Guyver) and Hideaki Anno (Gunbuster, Neon Genesis Evangelion) use the series as inspiration to some of their works. Now you can experience the legend of Kamen Rider in a two-disc DVD set (which is actually a bootleg of the original 4-disc boxed set by Toei). Never mind the cheesy acting, flat plots and unstable camera work. It's all about having fun watching Kamen Rider beat up the bad guys. The movies, when shown in order, depict the evolution of tokusatsu (special effects) in Japanese hero shows: the henshin (transformation) pose (mandatory on all Riders), the over-the-top stunts, the exploding deaths of the kaijin (simply put the camera on pause, get the stuntman out, place a stick of dynamite where he was, detonate it and roll the camera), and more. You'll also see how Rider suits and bikes have changed over the duration of the saga, from the bulky look of Kamen Rider 1 to the more stylized Kamen Rider BLACK. This movie set is highly recommended for old-school Kamen Rider fans. First-time viewers will want to pick this up to sample the experience of classic tokusatsu. Upon viewing this, you'll completely forget about Saban's Americanized shows and stick with the real deal. 3. Here's some more information on Top o Nerae! 2, courtesy of the Anime News Network: Plus, here's the staff list: Mechanical Design: Junya Ishigaki (Outlaw Star, Candidate for Goddess ) Mechanical Design: Shigeto Koyama Buster Machine Design: Yoshitsune Izuna (Gad Guard) - No wonder it looks familiar. It has a bit of a Lightning design to it.
  4. Agent ONE is right. Rotten Tomatoes has Van Helsing rated at 20% fresh, thus making it rotten on their list. Keep in mind that the Rotten Tomatoes staff do not review movies, they compile all available reviews and count them as either fresh or rotten.
  5. According to the link posted by GRAND CANNON, Anime Crash was acquired by foreign film distributor Crash Cinema (Golgo 13: The Kowloon Assignment).
  6. Well, I'll be checking out Van Helsing today and I'll probably review it later tonight.
  7. That sounds too familiar to us MWers.
  8. Forgot to mention that I will be in attendance at this month's PPV Judgment Day, which takes place at the Staples Center in L.A. If we're lucky, my co-worker's friend will get us backstage courtesy of RVD. But if RVD himself can't get his own wife backstage...
  9. http://www.animecrash.com/ The site is still under construction, but notice what it says on the front page. Talk about getting ahead of themselves... And their first offer to us is a Korean/Japanese series called Geisters: Fractions of the Earth, coming next month to stores. Sounds too much like another company's mascot.
  10. Earlier tonight on SmackDown!: - Yes, the heart attack incident is a work. A really bad one to be more specific. It's almost as bad as the time the Big Show's father passed away and the Big Boss Man dragged his coffin at the funeral. - Jacqueline beat Chavo Guerrero to become the new Cruiserweight champion. Are they gonna do the Chyna thing all over again? - Booker T. saw a psychic to find answers on how to defeat the Undertaker. Later on the show, he went to a cemetary and stopped by an unmarked grave. He picked up some dirt from it. After he left, a hand popped out of the grave. Is this the person named Mordecai who the Undertaker is supposed to feud with later this year? - Rene Dupree attempted to interfere with the Torrie Wilson vs. Dawn Marie match, but John Cena made the save, only to be obliterated through the announcers' table by the French Phenom. - The Dudleyz were set to face RVD and Eddie Guerrero, but at the last minute, Eddie was pulled out of the card by Kurt Angle because of the extent of Eddie's temper. Rey Mysterio filled in as RVD's partner. After RVD and Rey won the match, the Dudleyz attacked the duo before Eddie ran in and destroyed everyone in the ring, literally destroying a steel chair in the process. If John Bradshaw Layfield wins at this month's PPV, I'm boycotting SmackDown!
  11. Why is the Nono chick wearing a Stellvia uniform?
  12. About damn time. Hopefully, GAINAX doesn't disappoint us like AIC did with Not-So-Great Dangaioh.
  13. Actually, it's more like another love triangle.
  14. I smell another box office flop coming through. I guess that's why they pushed back the release date, as all the other summer blockbusters (Spider-Man 2, et al) will just annihilate it on the opening weekends.
  15. Ringu ( リング ) Kadokawa Shoten/Omega Project/Toho, 1998 DreamWorks Home Video, 2004 Directed by Hideo Nakata Not Rated (Suggested PG-13). Contains scenes of death, scary elements and mature situations. Cast - Nanako Matsushima (Azusa in GTO) as Reiko Asakawa - Hiroyuki Sanada as Ryuji Takayama - Rikiya Otaka as Yoichi Asakawa - Rie Inou as Sadako Yamamura - Miki Nakatani as Mai Takano - Katsumi Muramatsu as Koichi Asakawa - Yoichi Numata (Kuka in The Princess Blade) as Takashi Yamamura - Daisuke Ban (Jinzou Ningen Kikaider) as Dr. Heihachiro Ikuma Synopsis Following the mysterious death of her niece Tomoko, news reporter Reiko Asakawa investigates the cases of other teenagers who died of the same cause. Her only major clue is an unmarked videotape with vague images in it. Rumor has it that whoever watches the tape will receive a phone call from an unknown person, and he or she will die in seven days. After viewing the tape, Reiko and her ex-husband Ryuji Takayama must race against time to decipher the tape's contents and crack an unsolved mystery. Lowdown Finally, after shoving their version down our throats, DreamWorks SKG releases the movie that started it all. Ringu may not have a big budget or high-profile actors like its American counterpart, but it remains more terrifying and, in many ways, much more believable. (Note: I won't spoil anything here, so I'm not gonna put any more details on the story itself if you haven't seen either version.) If you have not seen Ringu, pick it up now. If you still have a bootleg of this movie, you can kiss it goodbye, as DreamWorks has sweetened this film with an all-new high-definition remaster with Dolby 5.1 digital surround sound. The result: a much cleaner film quality, a scarier soundtrack, and a more kawaii Nanako Matsushima. Without a doubt, Ringu is one of the best horror films ever made. And at under $15, it's a steal. Makes you even forget that an American version existed. Rating: A DVD Extras: F Nothing but the movie in this DVD release. Reference Anime News Network
  16. Damn good thing I sold my old Predator DVD years ago.
  17. Man, that really sucks. Gunbuster was one of the first anime titles I collected before I became a Macross Plus mark. I hope either AnimEigo, Bandai or Geneon pick it up. Even though they have a lot of great titles, I can't trust ADV with re-releasing Gunbuster.
  18. I suspect that Ladic might have a thing for the guy.
  19. I tried this game at the Wizard World Convention this past March. The graphics are okay, but the controls suck.
  20. That's not the robot. That's just the guy that controls Super Moo Jumbo.
  21. Did somebody say Sledge Hammer? "Trust me. I know what I'm doing." - Sledge Hammer
  22. The robot is actually called Super Moo Jumbo.
