  7. Wow...all this talk about metal, and we practically forgot about Aerosmith. I'd play any of these songs on GH: "Walk This Way" "Mama Kin" "Livin' on the Edge" "Love in an Elevator" "Janie's Got a Gun" "Same Old Song and Dance" "Sweet Emotion" "Back in the Saddle" "Rag Doll" "Eat the Rich" EDIT: Well, looks like RedOctane and Activision will release a GH title focusing primarily on Aerosmith.
  8. That's the common mentality among car enthusiasts. I say it doesn't hurt to experiment with different motors, Japanese or American. And remember, the RB26 was there because it was part of the story.
  9. Yeah, that would rule. But first, I'd like to see an AC/DC Edition. After all, the Gibson SG was made most famous by Angus Young. I'd actually pay to see someone dress up like Angus and play "Thunderstruck."

Jump (Live) Lowdown Hailing from Pasadena, CA, Van Halen has been one of the biggest moneymakers in music history. Formed by Dutch brothers Eddie and Alex Van Halen, bassist Michael Anthony and flamboyant vocalist David Lee Roth, their self-titled debut album in 1978 made rock fans aware of Eddie's uncanny experimentation with guitar sounds and Roth's off-the-wall antics - both of which conflicted with each other on practically every album released by the lineup. From 1978 to 1983, Van Halen sold out concerts worldwide and generated a huge fan following. But it was in 1984 that the band reached its pinnacle. 1984 was released, and it spawned the band's biggest selling single "Jump." Success, however, was not without a heavy price; Roth left Van Halen in 1985 as disagreements between him and Eddie were beyond any control. As Roth pursued a modestly successful solo career, Van Halen enlisted Sammy Hagar to take over as the band's lead vocalist. In 1986, the "Van Hagar" era began with the release of 5150. Despite hate and resentment by die-hard VH purists, the new lineup achieved more commercial success than they ever imagined. The four studio albums released during the Van Hagar era all hit #1 on Billboard's album charts and earned the band two Grammy nominations. Van Hagar even survived the grunge movement of the '90s, which saw the near-extinction of hair metal. Of course, nothing lasts forever - especially Van Hagar. Conflict with the Van Halen brothers led to Hagar's unceremonious departure in 1996. Not too long afterwards, Roth found himself with the band once again, recording new songs for Van Halen: Best of Vol. 1. The reunion wasn't going to last from the get-go. Just like eleven years earlier, disagreements with Eddie resulted in Roth leaving Van Halen for good. In 1997, Van Halen brought in Gary Cherone (formerly of the hair metal band Extreme) as lead vocalist for the band's 11th album Van Halen III. Needless to say, both Van Halen purists and Van Hagar fans hated the lineup (sometimes known as "Van Cherone"), and the album flopped. Cherone called it quits in 1999, and Van Halen was dormant for the next five years. Those years off-stage were not good for Eddie. He underwent hip-replacement surgery and mouth cancer treatment. He separated with actress Valerie Bertinelli after 21 years of marriage in 2001; she filed for divorce four years later. In 2004, Hagar reunited with the band to record new songs for yet another compilation CD titled The Best of Both Worlds. However, despite a hugely successful tour, Van Hagar once again died out - this time as a result of Eddie's uncontrollable drinking problem. Hagar left the band for good, and Van Halen was on indefinite hiatus. It was later on revealed that Michael Anthony also had his share of problems with the Van Halen brothers, as he did not perform bass on the compilation's new tracks and was paid very poorly on the band's last tour. As a matter of fact, the last time Van Halen recorded together as a band was on three tracks for the ill-fated Van Cherone stint. Today, Hagar and Anthony remain close friends. Roth insists that a Van Halen reunion is inevitable. Alex isn't doing much while Eddie...well, your guess is as good as mine (click here at your own risk!). In the meantime, pick up The Best of Both Worlds. Sure, VH purists will be turned off by the fact that Roth and Hagar songs alternate with each other throughout both discs, but it's good for first-time listeners who want to learn the differences between the two lineups. Disc 2 also includes three tracks from the band's first (and only) live CD Live: Right Here, Right Now. On the bright side, none of the Van Cherone recordings made it in this compilation. 11. Amen to that. If they're gonna use VH's cover of "You Really Got Me," they might as well include the "Eruption" intro.
  12. Too much keyboard and not enough guitar on that song. At least Van Hagar wasn't as bad as when Gary Cherone took over for Van Halen III.

  14. For VH, I'd play "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" or "Running With the Devil." I'm also game for Van Hagar songs like "Poundcake" or "It's About Time." As for Crue, it'll be "Shout at the Devil" or "Girls, Girls, Girls." BTW, if the next GH has a cooperative mode, I'd like to have the option of rhythm guitar or bass.
  15. Why, that's a great idea. I want to play some Spandau Ballet, Bolshoi, Gene Loves Jezebel, Simple Minds and Tears For Fears. Oh, I forgot to post GH's playlist: 1. 16. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift ( ワイルドスピードX3 TOKYO DRIFT ) Relativity Media/Universal Pictures, 2006 Directed by Justin Lin (Better Luck Tomorrow) Running Time: 104 minutes Rated PG-13 for violence, suggestive sexual situations and strong language. Cast Lucas Black as Sean Boswell Bow Wow as Twinkie Nathalie Kelley as Neela Brian Tee as Takeshi "D.K." Kamata Sung Kang as Han Keiko Kitagawa (Rei/Sailor Mars in Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon) as Reiko Leonardo Nam as Morimoto Sonny Chiba as Boss Kamata Brian Goodman as Maj. Boswell Nikki Griffin as Cindy Keiichi "The Real Drift King" Tsuchiya as a fisherman Vin Diesel as Dominic Toretto Synopsis Sean Boswell is a high school student with a penchant for trouble everywhere he goes, especially when it involves cars. When he gets involved in a deadly crash during a street race, he's given two choices: juvenile hall or Tokyo, Japan, where his father is stationed as a naval officer. Clay: "This beast's got a 500-horsepower engine with a Borla exhaust. It does 0-60 in what, 4.3 seconds." Sean: "Wow. You can read the brochure." Upon arriving in Tokyo, he meets Twinkie, an Army brat who studies at his school and sells imported goods on the side. He also meets Neela, an Australian classmate who is dating a Yakuza brat known as "D.K." Letting his pride get the best of him, Sean challenges D.K. to a race, learning the hard way that his style doesn't work against D.K. Twinkie: "Do you know what 'D.K.' means?" Sean: "Donkey Kong?" As a result of losing to D.K., he has to pay off his debt by working with Chinese expatriate and expert drifter Han in collecting money for the Yakuza. He quickly befriends Han and starts learning how to drift. Things get deadly when Sean gets too close to Neela while D.K. demands an explanation from Han on some missing collection money. As a means to put the situation to an end, Sean issues a loser-leaves-town duel against D.K. D.K.: "Do you know who I am, boy?" Sean: "You're the Justin Timberlake of Japan?" Lowdown Since 2001, The Fast and the Furious series has been one of Universal Pictures' biggest moneymakers, generating nearly a billion dollars worldwide in box office and DVD sales, as well as merchandising. The first film shot Paul Walker and Vin Diesel into superstardom, while 2 Fast 2 Furious, well, didn't really do much for Tyrese Gibson's career. Still, Universal knows that as long as high school kids dig cars, there will always be a F&F movie. Sean: "Wabaki..." Which brings us to the third installation of the series: The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Fortunately, Paul Walker's not in it. Instead, the producers have decided to make a superstar out of Lucas Black, who is best known as Kruger in Jarhead. If you can't stand Walker's surfer-dude attitude, try putting up with Black's Southern redneck accent. Unfortunately, as with every F&F movie, this one has a rapper among the cast. F&F had Ja Rule, 2F2F had Ludacris, and this one has Bow Wow. He has the dubious honor of driving the most ridiculously ricey vehicle - an Incredible Hulk-themed green Volkswagen Touran minivan with purple fur interior. Speaking of rice, you can't have a F&F movie without riced-up tuners. For this film, you won't see any Civics or Corollas. Instead, you have primarily RWD machines that are actually more than display pieces, such as the Nissan Silvia S15, Nissan Fairlady (350) Z, and Mazda RX-7 (the latter two featured with VeilSide body kits). The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX is also featured; but for this film, it's been reconfigured to RWD instead of its stock AWD setup. But for the final race, Sean drives his father's 1967 Ford Mustang GT, which has been retrofitted with a Nissan RB26DETT engine swapped from the S15 he trashed on his first run-in with DK. As far as acting goes, you probably should've learned from the first two movies that the word 'acting' is almost non-existent. Still, it's more tolerable than that of 2F2F, except for the fact that Keiko Kitagawa's talent was severely wasted with only a couple of lines and two minutes of screen time. Now if you want to talk about action, there's plenty of that. The movie uses less CG than the first two films and the races are a lot more intense. Even the Monte Carlo vs. Viper race at the beginning of the film is worth the price of admission. There's a lot of talk about a certain person's cameo appearance. I really didn't care much about "his" two minutes at the end of the film; I was more interested in champion drifter Keiichi Tsuchiya making his presence. In short, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift is not as good as the first film, but way better than the second. It's also a great popcorn flick, whether or not you're a car nut. Rating: B Sean: "This ain't no 10-second race, you know." Dominic: "I've got nothin' but time." Links Official Site Official Site (Japanese) Reference The Internet Movie Database

  18. Sweet. I just did a search, and here's the GH2 playlist so far: "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath "Strutter" by KISS "YYZ" by Rush "Psychobilly Freakout" by Reverend Horton Heat "You Really Got Me" by Van Halen "Who Was in My Room Last Night?" by Butthole Surfers What songs would you want to play in a future GH installment?
  19. You mean the Shredder? That thing sucks! I've been reading nothing but quality control problems on it: sticky fret buttons, a loose strum bar and having to shake it for Star Power. You might as well buy the GH Multiplayer Bundle or hunt down the rare cherry red SG controller instead.
  20. Guitar Hero ( ギターヒーロー ) Harmonix/RedOctane, Inc., 2005 For the Sony PlayStation 2 Rated T (Teen) for mild lyrics. Lowdown For the past few years, music games have been the cornerstone of house parties in just about every neighborhood. Gamers dropped their controllers in favor of dance pads or contraptions made to look and operate like musical instruments. Aside from Dance Dance Revolution, gaming companies have cashed in on music games such as Nintendo's Donkey Konga, Sega's Samba de Amigo and Namco's Taiko Drum Master. But how about guitar games? Konami was actually the first to come up with a guitar game called Guitar Freaks in 1998. However, while it was modestly popular in Japan, it flopped in the U.S. due to poor marketing and a short playlist. It seemed that a guitar game was not feasible for the American audience. Or was it? Enter: RedOctane. Known for their variety of dance pads and the game In the Groove (which led to Konami suing the company for copying DDR), RedOctane collaborated with Harmonix Music Systems to release what may be the most awesome music game ever made: Guitar Hero. For $69.99, you get the game and a guitar controller designed after the Gibson SG. Now get ready to rock! Gameplay: A+ How can such a game be so addictive? You don't need to know how to play guitar to play Guitar Hero. As long as you love rock music, you simply jam to your favorite songs while giving your hand-coordination one hell of a workout. In Career Mode, you play a guitarist for an aspiring cover band looking to make it big. You have eight characters with styles to choose from, including hair metal, British rock, punk, goth, and even Death himself. You also have a selection of guitars from Gibson, such as the world-famous Les Paul (your favorite band probably uses it), the SG (AC/DC's Angus Young), the X-Plorer (Metallica's James Hetfield), and the double-neck EDS-1275 (Jimmy Page). Gameplay is straight-forward. Your guitar controller consists of five color-coded fret buttons, a strum bar and a whammy bar. During a performance, when a colored button appears on the screen, press the matching fret button and strum to earn points. Hold the fret button if the chord requires a long note. Use the whammy bar to give long notes a unique sound. Your performance is not only scored, but rated with the Rock Meter. Keep the meter on green, or the crowd will boo you out of the arena. As you complete a song, a new song is unlocked, and during your progression, you can unlock more characters and guitars, as well as custom skins and other backstage goodies. Star Power also plays a key factor to your performance. Once you build up your star power meter, tilt your guitar controller upward (or press the Select button if you're lazy) to double your points for a short period of time. This is excellent for guitar solos during a song. Players can choose their level of difficulty. Easy gives out simple notes with the use of three fret buttons. Medium and Hard gives players access to the fourth and fifth fret buttons, respectively. (This is where Guitar Freaks fails, as Konami's guitar controller only has three fret buttons). Guitar Hero provides hours of fun, especially when two guitar controllers enable you and your friend to duke it out on Battle Mode (yeah, go try this with your PS2 controller...). Graphics: B- As with most music games, don't expect any high-caliber graphics. You'll only see your band in the background while you keep your eyes on the chord line. Guitar Hero's got nice colors, but that's about it. Soundtrack: A You got the guitar, but you simply can't have Guitar Hero without some music to shred to. The game includes 47 licensed rock songs to choose from. Don't expect originals, though - 30 of them are covers (READ: "As made famous by..."), while the other 17 are indie band releases. You'll jam to rock classics like Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water," hair metal hits like Judas Priest's "You've Got Another Thing Comin'," punk favorites like The Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated," and modern tracks like Queens of the Stone Age's "No One Knows." Now if only this game had some Van Halen in it... The Bottom Line Kiss your air guitar goodbye! Guitar Hero is loads of headbanging fun on your PS2. "Excellent!
