  4. Cloak & Dagger Universal Pictures, 1984 Directed by Richard Franklin (1948-2007) (Roadgames, Psycho II) Based on the 1949 film The Window Running Time: 101 minutes Rated PG for violence and mature situations. Cast Henry Thomas (Elliott in E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Samuel in Legends of the Fall) as Davey Osborne Dabney Coleman (Dr. McKittrick in WarGames) as Hal Osborne and Jack Flack Christina Nigra as Kim Gardener William Forsythe (Flattop in Dick Tracy) as Morris John McIntire (1907-1991) as George MacCready Jeanette Nolan (1911-1998) as Eunice MacCready Synopsis Davey Osborne is a kid trying to cope with his mother's death while his father Hal is too occupied in his job in military air traffic. This leaves Davey immersing himself into an espionage role-playing game called Cloak & Dagger, fantasizing himself living in an adventure with the game's hero Jack Flack. One day, while running an errand for his friend's video game store, Davey witnesses the murder of a scientist, who hands him an Atari 5200 cartridge of the Cloak & Dagger game. Inside the cartridge are top-secret documents pertaining to the SR-71 Blackbird. Davey fends for his life as spies all over town are after him, and no one believes him due to his fantasy play. Lowdown It was mentioned on a my film review thread for Flight of the Navigator that the '80s was filled with "kidsploitation" flicks that simply had kids as the main protagonists. It was also the decade where Hollywood first experimented with video game tie-ins. Cloak & Dagger was a result of Universal collaborating with Atari, when the latter company was developing a game titled Agent X. Hot off his role as Elliott in the 1982 blockbuster E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, Henry Thomas does a good job playing a kid nobody would believe. Dabney Coleman plays Davey's father, but it's his role as Davey's imaginary friend Jack Flack that steals most of the show. Everybody else is rather average on their performance. The story itself is rather dark for a kid-oriented film. Very few movies of this kind directly deal with on-screen death. And because of an elderly couple that "befriends" Davey - only to reveal themselves to him as spies, many kids probably developed nightmares about old people. The Cloak & Dagger video game is somewhat misleading, as screenshots are from the arcade unit. An Atari 5200 version was never made due to the great video game crash of 1983. Overall, Cloak & Dagger is an '80s kids film that doesn't age well like The Goonies, but it still holds its own with its plot twists and Davey's interaction with Jack Flack. Makes a great rental for you and the kids to watch. "Jack Flack always escapes." Rating: B+ DVD Extras Saw it on late-night TV, so I haven't seen the DVD release yet to judge on the extras. 8. Sorry to hear about your loss, dude. This past June, my cousin had to give up his dog after 14 1/2 years because he couldn't bear the pain he was going through. It was sad seeing my cousin pick up Rex and drive him to the shelter. Over a decade ago, I was devastated when my family's Miniature Pinscher suddenly collapsed and died. She was only six years old when she died of a heart attack. So I know what it's like to lose such a friend. May he rest in peace.

  10. All this talk about Metallica and AC/DC releasing new albums over the past month, and I can't believe we all overlooked the new album by Queen + Paul Rodgers, which is due for release here in the U.S. on October 28. Now, I love Queen music as much as the next guy, and it's no surprise that Queen was one of Iron Maiden's influences (just listen to any live version of "Sanctuary"), but a part of me says that Queen died when Freddie Mercury died, and even further when John Deacon retired for good. Of course, Brian May and Roger Taylor are two of my all-time favorite musicians, but half of Queen just doesn't equal to them calling themselves Queen. Of course, the same could be said about KISS, The Who and the Rolling Stones, but the bands still have their core members. Queen, on the other hand, is a different story. Though each member made huge contributions to the band's career, it was Mercury who made the lion's share of the songs that made Queen what it was. The band's versatility in incorporating different genres made them legendary, especially with the songs written by Mercury. Most of May and Taylor's compositions were primarily hard rock, which is awesome. But it just isn't Queen without Mercury and Deacon. Not to say that Queen + Paul Rodgers is a bad idea; it's just something that shouldn't be done on a permanent basis. Even to this day, I'm still afraid to pick up Return of the Champions. The first single is a well-written ballad. The second one, on the other hand, just doesn't feel like Queen. It sounds too much like Tenacious D's "The Metal." "C-lebrity"

  15. The 8C didn't perform well on that episode for two reasons: 1. Jeremy Clarkson is not a professional driver. His driving style never amounts to the potential of any car he tests on the track. 2. The Power Lap was hampered by heavy rain. Hopefully, they'll get to retest the 8C on a sunny day.

  20. For those who checked out the deleted scenes, what did you think of the original ending? SPOILER On the original ending, the Arc Reactor overload does not instantly kill Stane. The Iron Monger suit hangs on the edge next to Stark. Stark holds on to Stane as he tries to free himself from the cockpit. Realizing his lower body is stuck, Stane then grabs Stark's arm with both hands as an attempt to bring him along his fall. Stark releases parts of his forearm armor, sending Stane falling to his death.

  22. Cel-shaded animation on human characters is a hit-or-miss situation. I didn't care much about the two recent Appleseed movies, but the animation here reminds me too much of SD Gundam Force - which is a bad thing.
