  1. Here's something you don't see everyday: Ron Perlman Reprises Hellboy Role for the Very Best Reason Possible
  2. I just finished watching Ninja Assassin, and I must say that I'm a bit disappointed by it. Whereas Ninja is a textbook martial arts film that gives what is promised to viewers, Ninja Assassin relies too much on blood and gore, plus CG effects and shaky camera work that take away the whole point of it being a martial arts film. Hell, the storyline feels too derivative of Batman Begins. On top of that, it merely serves as a stepping stone for K-Pop sensation Rain. Even the title is redundant, as ninjas are already assassins. The film's only redeeming factor is Sho Kosugi, but he actually doesn't do much here. So between Ninja and Ninja Assassin, one is a proper martial arts film while the other is just another overhyped Hollywood bomb.
  3. S.H. Figuarts Garo (牙狼(ガロ)) Bandai, 2011 Made in China Contents Garo figure Extra hands (x 5) Garoken with sheath Cape Rear tassel (x 2) More than six year after the TV series premiered late nights in Japan, Garo gets the S.H. Figuarts treatment. As with most figures in the line, Garo boasts extreme poseability - with approximately 35 points of articulation. Like earlier Kamen Rider figures, Garo's feet are die-cast metal. While they help in leg stability, their use of swivel joints limits their range of motion compared to the ball joints of newer figures. And while the figure has a wide range of movement, the shoulders are limited by the chest armor. In terms of accessories, this figure is rather spartan, as it only has five extra hands, the Garoken sword, two tassels to decorate the back and the cape from the series' final episode. It's too bad Bandai has yet to explore other variations used on the armor such as wings. The sculpting detail is undoubtedly the most impressive of all the S.H. Figuarts figures. No detail was spared on Garo's helmet at all! Of course, the paint finish is not 100% show-accurate, as the actual suit used in the series is gold chrome. But then again, having an all-chrome figure like this would be high-maintenance - God forbid a single fingerprint soiled on a single panel. Nevertheless, the figure is decorated in metallic gold with silver and black highlights, as well as some red and green details. Even the Garoken has all the details seen in the TV series. The only downside is the unpainted Mado Ring Zaruba on the left hands, but that's only a minor flaw. Compared to other figures in the line, Garo is shockingly more expensive. At ¥4,725, he is over ¥1,000 more than the average Kamen Rider. And he's the only one in the series available on retail; Zero and Taiga are Tamashii Web exclusives that fetch over US$100.00. If you need all of the Makai Knights, you can settle for the smaller, less-detailed S.I.C. Kiwami Tamashii line. Despite the high price and small array of accessories, Garo makes an excellent display piece, whether or not you have seen the TV series. Hell, this would be a great incentive for you to start watching. Detail: A- Features: B Articulation: B+
  4. In a recent radio interview, Jason David Frank had this to say: "If Saban ever wanted me to do something, I would do it. I just want everyone to know that if you hear any rumors about Jason Frank not doing the 20 year anniversary for any other reason, I will tell everybody right now that I do things for fun. I would do it for all of my fans and I would do it for a dollar. If it doesn't happen, it has nothing to do with me, it has nothing to do with money, it has to do with Saban. If the fans wanted to see me, it has nothing to do with money. It has to do with doing stuff for you guys." That's right - you can't have a Power Rangers anniversary without Tommy. Now who else will they pick up from the alumni?
  5. In the wake of Tensou Sentai Goseiger officially becoming Power Rangers Megaforce next year, Saban announced at the San Diego Comic-Con International that Gokaiger will be Megaforce's second season. Couldn't they think of a better title, though? Gokaiger to Be Adapted as Power Rangers Super Megaforce
  6. Yet another British automotive icon has fallen. Just today, Russian tycoon Nikolay Smolensky has given up on the TVR brand he has owned since 2004. Instead, he will retool the factory to manufacture wind turbines. In memory of the brand, here's a clip from Swordfish, featuring the Tuscan Speed 6. R.I.P. 9. According to IGN, Michael Fassbender (Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto in X-Men: First Class, David in Prometheus) has been cast in an upcoming film adaptation of Ubisoft's popular game series Assassin's Creed. He will play the role of Callum Lynch and Aguilar, original characters for this film. Also starring are Marion Cotillard (Mal in Inception, Miranda/Talia al Ghul in The Dark Knight Rises), Michael K. Williams (Robert in 12 Years a Slave, Omar in The Wire), Ariane Labed (French actress making her Hollywood debut), Jeremy Irons (Simon Gruber in Die Hard with a Vengeance, Tiberias in Kingdom of Heaven), and Brendan Gleeson (Hamish in Braveheart, Mad-Eye in Harry Potter). Assassin's Creed is directed by Justin Kurzel (Macbeth) and is set for release on December 21, 2016. Michael Fassbender Cast in Assassin's Creed Movie
  10. At least he can draw feet. Rob Liefield still can't do that after over 20 years in the business.
  11. Ninja Nu Image/First Look Studios, 2009 Directed by Isaac Florentine (Undisputed II: Last Man Standing, Undisputed III: Redemption) Running Time: 86 minutes Rated R for graphic martial arts violence and profanity. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTOMS-zaXXU Cast Scott Adkins (Boyka in Undisputed II-III, Agent Kiley in The Bourne Ultimatum) as Casey Bowman Tsuyoshi Ihara (Baron Nishi in Letters from Iwo Jima, Hirayama in 13 Assassins) as Masazuka Mika Hijii (Kaoru in Garo, Rin in AvN: Alien vs. Ninja) as Namiko Takeda Todd Jensen as Detective Traxler Miles Anderson as Temple Garrick Hagon as Professor Garrison Togo Igawa as Sensei Synopsis Casey Bowman is an orphaned American who was adopted into a martial arts dojo in Japan. Because of his devotion to the dojo's teachings, he has won the respect of the Sensei and his students. But when former disciple Masazuka becomes a hired killer and threatens to take the dojo's sacred treasure, Casey and the Sensei's daughter Namiko must ensure the protection of the treasure and their school's legacy. Lowdown Remember the old days when you rented those cheesy American Ninja movies just to kill time? Well, Ninja relives those days of glory. Just like American Ninja, this film has a very shallow plot with a white guy as the main protagonist. Why strain yourself over a lack of storyline when you can just appreciate the impressive fight scenes that nearly rival those of Tony Jaa? And just as an added incentive, you have that Japanese hottie Mika Hijii, who is a famous face in a lot of tokusatsu and Japanese martial arts films. Apart from all this, the fights are outstanding as I mentioned earlier, and the ninja outfits are badass. Again, you don't watch this sort of film for Oscar-winning material. If you want a no-nonsense martial arts film, add Ninja to your rental queue. I haven't seen Ninja Assassin (and I don't intend to for the meantime), but I've read that this movie is much better. I can imagine. Rating: B+ References The Internet Movie Database

  13. AvN: Alien vs. Ninja Sushi Typhoon/Nikkatsu Corporation, 2010 Funimation Entertainment, 2011 Directed by Seiji Chiba (The Kunoichi: Ninja Girl) Running Time: 83 minutes Rated R for graphic martial arts violence and gore, suggestive sexual situations and profanity. PARENTAL ADVISORY: EXPLICIT NINJUTSU! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED! Cast Shuji Kashiwabara as Yamata Mika Hijii (Kaoru in Garo, Namiko in Ninja) as Rin Ben Hiura as Jinnai Donpei Tsuchihira as Nezumi Synopsis In Feudal Japan, a ninja clan is sent out to investigate an object that just fell from the sky. What they discover is a group of alien lifeforms that surpass their fighting skills. With the aliens quickly cutting down their numbers, three ninja warriors must fight to survive and prevent the aliens from wiping out other villages in Japan. Lowdown I bet that one night, someone at a drinking party in Japan imagined a movie where ninjas fought Aliens and Predators. Obviously, because of copyright limitations, he couldn't put Aliens and Predators in his film; so he came up with his own bad guy. Alien vs. Ninja is simply a very loose remake of Predator, only with a change of setting. Feudal Japan replaces the jungles of Guatemala and instead of American commandos, we have ninjas. The Alien in this film is obviously a cheap ripoff of the Xenomorph from the Alien series, and it's undoubtedly one of the ugliest alien designs ever made. There practically is no story and the CG special effects are laughable at most. So why watch this movie? The martial arts, of course! For such a cheesy monster movie, Alien vs. Ninja actually has mind-blowing fight choreography, especially from the guy wearing the rubber suit. And if that doesn't keep you interested, there's Mika Hijii, who is just drop-dead gorgeous as the female ninja Rin. Just watch her fight scene above. Alien vs. Ninja is what you would typically expect to see late night at Syfy, but its fight scenes are enough to entertain anyone. And if you don't like it, the ninjas have this to say... 14. I think they're all equally hot, now that they're in their 20s. I'm still trying to get over the reality that Rina Koike, who played 10-year-old Sailor Luna in the series, is now an 18-year-old gravure idol. After PGSM, her most notable role was Shizuka in Kamen Rider Kiva (2008).
  15. Whoever they got as the new RoboCop should have a mime artist coach like Peter Weller did, because it ain't RoboCop without those movements.

  17. The Bourne saga continues with The Bourne Legacy. However, unlike the previous trilogy, Matt Damon will not reprise his role as Jason Bourne in this installment, and despite its title, the film has nothing to do with the 2004 novel by Eric Von Lustbader. Instead, we have Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye in Thor and The Avengers, Brandt in Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol) as Aaron Cross, a product of the top-secret "Operation Outcome." Also starring are Rachel Weisz (Evie in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns) and Edward Norton (like nobody here knows who he is...); reprising their roles from the Bourne trilogy are Joan Allen (Warden Hennessey in Death Race), David Strathairn (Edward Murrow in Good Night, and Good Luck.), Albert Finney (Daddy Warbucks in Annie, Kincade in Skyfall) and Scott Glenn (Capt. Colby in Apocalypse Now, Alan Shepard in The Right Stuff). The Bourne Legacy opens in U.S. theaters on August 10. Official Site
  18. That's because you haven't been here long enough. We have a long thread dedicated to the live-action series. I didn't mention that role because everybody here knows that already. I didn't know that. All I know is that Gubaba loves Momoiro Clover Z.
  19. Because Toei allocated the budget on merchandise and special effects for their Kamen Rider and Super Sentai shows. And I think there are some limitations to their stunts to keep the suit actors safe from serious injury. To put it another way: Kamen Rider/Super Sentai = WWE Garo = the old ECW
  20. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the popular manga and anime series, Sailor Moon will have an anime reboot in 2013. Kotono Mitsuishi (Excel Saga, Misato in Neon Genesis Evangelion) and Tohru Furuya (Jin Saotome in Cyberbots, Jo Azuma in Harmagedon) reprise their roles as Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon and Mamoru Chiba/Tuxedo Kamen, respectively. The new series will have a theme song performed by idol group Momoiro Clover Z. The reboot will supposedly be more faithful to the manga than the original anime and will be aimed toward older fans. Now if only they did a new live-action series... New Sailor Moon Anime Coming This 2013
  21. Garo (牙狼) TV Tokyo/Project Garo/Bandai Visual, 2005-2006 How come no one's licensed this yet? Created and directed by Keita Amemiya (Onimusha 2-3, Kamen Rider ZO) Running Time: 25 minutes per episode Not Rated (Suggested TV-MA). Contains graphic violence, nudity and strong language. "Where there is light, shadows lurk and fear reigns. Yet by the blade of knights, mankind was given hope." Cast Hiroki Konishi as Kouga Saejima/Garo the Golden Knight Mika Hijii (Rin in AvN: Alien vs. Ninja, Namiko in Ninja) as Kaoru Mitsuki Ray Fujita (Kitazaki/Dragon Orphnoch in Kamen Rider 555) as Rei Suzumura/Zero the Silver Fanged Knight Hironobu Kageyama (veteran anime and tokusatsu singer) as Madou Ring Zaruba (voice) Ai Orikasa (Ryoko in Tenchi Muyo!, Quatre in Gundam Wing) as Madou Necklace Silva (voice) Yukijiro Hotaru as Gonza Kurahashi Masaki Kyomoto as Karune Ryuzaki Keaki Watanabe as Keiru; Fumiko Inoue as Keiru (voice) Anri Okamoto as Beru; Machiko Kawana as Beru (voice) Yukina Kashiwa as Rose; Akemi Sato as Rose (voice) Kimika Yoshino as Gulm Mark Musashi as Kodama Mina Fukui (Ran Uzaki/Geki Yellow in Jyuken Sentai Gekiranger) as Asami Shinohara Alisa Durbrow (Mio Kuroki in Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon) as Shizuka "There are demonic beasts called Horrors that live in the darkness. This is a story about a Makai Knight who hunts down the Horrors. You better not avert your eyes." Synopsis Kouga Saejima is a Makai Knight who, as Garo, protects mankind against demonic manifestations called "Horrors". One night, while battling a Horror, a young artist named Kaoru Mitsuki has the Horror's blood spilled on her. Under the Makai Knight's code of honor, anyone tainted with the blood of a Horror must be taken down, or they will suffer a painful death within 100 days. However, rather than kill her immediately, he spares her life to use her as bait to lure other Horrors and search for a way to purify her before her time runs out. Lowdown Garo is a major departure from the usual tokusatsu shows you're used to. It's not as flamboyant as the Super Sentai series, or as mainstream as the Kamen Rider series. Instead, it's dark. Really dark. You have your silent, anti-hero protagonist who means business when he pulls out his sword. He also has a talking ring that gives him a Vampire Hunter D vibe. And if that's not enough, he magically puts on what may be the most badass knight armor ever designed. The Horrors here are not your typical kaijin from other shows. They don't simply take over a host body and leave it when defeated nor do they kidnap people and keep them alive; instead, any victim they take is dead, and they tear their host bodies apart when they battle Garo. Definitely not family entertainment. Initially, Kouga has no care about humans - especially Kaoru, but as the series progresses, he slowly develops some sort of relationship with her while struggling to hide the truth on why he has kept her alive. Then, in episode 6, we are introduced to Rei Suzumura, who is also a Makai Knight named Zero. He enters the scene as a fierce rival of Kouga, but he apparently has a personal vendetta with Garo and is often tempted to take Kaoru's life. Despite running at a considerably lower budget than Toei's TV shows, Garo makes up for the cheap CG effects with some of the best fight choreography and swordplay ever filmed for a TV series. The intense fights are further enhanced by the excellent music by JAM Project. Just watch the music video above. To summarize, Garo proves that you don't need a Toei budget to produce a badass tokusatsu series. I should've picked this up when it came out seven years ago, but now that I have this on my watchlist, I got a lot of catching up to do. And that S.H. Figuarts Garo is just too sweet.
