  1. Imaginaerum Caramel Films/Solar Films/Scene Nation, 2012 Directed by Stobe Harju Written by Stobe Harju and Tuomas Holopainen Based on the album Imaginaerum by Nightwish Running Time: 85 minutes Not Rated (suggested R). Contains graphic violence and strong language. Cast Quinn Lord (Student in The Possession) as Thomas Whitman, age 10 Francis-Xavier McCarthy as Thomas Whitman, age 75 Marianne Farley as Gem Whitman, age 35 Joanna Noyes as Ann, age 73 Elias Toufexis as Mr. White (voice) Keyanna Fielding as Gem Whitman, age 7 Victoria Ann Jung as Ann, age 8 Ilkka Villi as Theodore Whitman and Mr. White Roy Lea as Dr. JanssonStephane Demere as the Twisted Toy Soldier Hélène Robitaille as Arabesque "Miracles come in small packages. It takes so little to turn a child into the most fortunate being in the world." Nightwish Tuomas Holopainen (keyboardist) as Thomas Whitman, ages 34 and 47 Anette Olzon (lead vocalist, 2005-2012) as Ann, age 32 Marco Hietala (bassist) as Marcus Emppu Vuorinen (guitarist) as Emil Jukka Nevalainen (drummer) as Jack Troy Donockley (uilleann piper) as the Magician Synopsis Thomas Whitman is a 75-year-old man who has lapsed into a coma as a result of dementia. As he is clinging to his life while his estranged daughter Gem plans to pull the plug on him, his mind is in a fantasy world where he relives his childhood past and tries to come to terms with his past while facing his inner demon in the form of a snowman called "Mr. White". Lowdown It's not very often that a music artist ventures to make a movie out of their own works; and those that do have varying levels of success. The Beatles' Yellow Submarine was a critical success while the KISS TV film KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park is widely regarded as one of the worst movies ever made. And then we have the symphonic metal band Nightwish, Finland's most successful music act today. As majority of their albums are "concept albums" with songs sharing a common theme, it would be hard not to imagine a few movies or stage plays made out of them. For their 2011 album Imaginaerum, that's exactly what they set their sights on. The songs from the album are vividly created on the big screen, from the bluesy to the climactic "Last Ride of the Day" roller coaster ride scene. The story borrows plenty of elements from Tim Burton films and other movies about dreams and imagination, and it plays very well - making a lot more sense than Sucker Punch.Produced at a modest budget of US$3.7 million, the Imaginaerum film has the acting quality of a typical made-for-TV special, but the special effects and cinematography are surprisingly amazing. Much like Iron Sky (another movie from Finland), a lot of the CG effects in this film look like they were done on a larger budget than you think. Many of the costumes and props look cheap and cheesy, but they're supposed to be, as a dream world has infinite degrees of surrealism. The soundtrack consists of a breathtaking orchestral score by Petri Alanko, based on the album's songs. As for the band themselves, their performances in the film are minimal, as keyboardist/leader Tuomas Holopainen acts out several non-speaking roles of Thomas Whitman in his 30s and 40s while the other members are simply band members in the background. Overall, Imaginaerum is a fun ride, whether or not you're into Nightwish and their music. The acting may not be the best, but the visual effects are worth the rental. 2. Both companies must be so desperate that they've teamed up.
  3. International box office numbers are in, and the total is a whopping US$198,400,000. It's already making up for its projected US$200 million budget right before its U.S. premiere. Box Office Mojo
  4. I had completely forgotten about this movie. This was actually in Round 4 (and the final round) of my Bad Movie Night challenge with my roommate, who dared me to watch this as he claimed it was his bad movie trump card. Yes, it's merely a 100-minute Nintendo commercial with pretty bad acting and a script written in crayon, but I made him watch Robotech II: The Sentinels as my counterattack. Maybe that's why I forgot about The Wizard all this time.
  5. With this movie bombing at the box office and video rentals, you'd think that the producers would learn from their mistakes. Unfortunately, they didn't. Last year, Crystal Sky Pictures announced the development of the prequel film Tekken: Rise of the Tournament. No characters have been cast and no plot has been announced (not like that hurt them the first time around), but Ong-Bak director Prachya Pinkaew was on the director's chair for this. No further announcements have been made since then. Tekken: Rise of the Tournament Prequel in Development
  6. So let me get this straight: This girl falls asleep behind the wheel and totals her car. But when she says that the car was a Subaru and it saved her life, Subaru gives her $10,000. Is there something wrong with this picture? EDIT: Looks like Subaru learned their lesson and took down the video.
  7. On this episode of Hikounin Sentai Akibaranger Season 2: Episode 3: "Martial Arts Delusion" (妄想拳劇) Special Guest: Keiichi Wada as Ryu Ranger (voice) The Akibarangers may have defeated Chief Clerk Blu-Ray, but the timeline is still screwed up, as the Dairangers still have not been restored to the continuity. Meanwhile, ©Na returns from the dead and reveals she's now the commander of the new evil organization Baros LOL (バロスw). Now we know why Kiba Ranger is pissed off. As a result of Akibaranger swapping places with Dairanger in the continuity, further screw-ups occurred in 1993, when Gosei Sentai Akibaranger was cancelled after only 13 episodes due to the show's poor management. As a result of this, Kiba Ranger never saw the spotlight and ended up in obscurity. So in order for China Red and Kiba Ranger to return to normal, the Akibarangers attempt to re-enact scenes from Dairanger in hopes that they remember their past. Oh yeah, ©Na is back, but she can't explain how because, well, it wasn't actually written in the script or the cue cards. Still, we're treated to a shower scene before she disrobes in front of this week's monster. Next time, on Hikounin Sentai Akibaranger Season 2: Episode 4: "Delusional Goddess" (妄想女神) Naughty girls need love too. Good boys and girls shouldn't watch.
  8. Some more info on the D-Arts Pokémon: * Mewtwo was just released last month. It comes with a Mew figurine, an effects part and a Pokéball-shaped Tamshii Stage stand. * Charizard (Lizardon) was just released last week. It comes with flame effects parts and a Pokéball-shaped Tamshii Stage stand. Unfortunately, it does not come with Charmander or Charmeleon. * Blastoise (Kamex) will be available in June and will come with water blast effects parts. No word if Squirtle will come with the figure. * Venusaur (Fushigibana) is slated for an August release. Its flower is fully articulated and will come with detachable vines. Bulbasaur and Ivysaur figures will least likely see the light of day. * No word on any other Pokémon figures. Still, it's a surprise to most fans that there is no Pikachu or Ash.
  9. Couple of interviews: Robert Downey, Jr.: Injured ankle during filming, unsure about Iron Man 4. Gwyneth Paltrow: Son is more of a Hulk fan.
  10. Damn, talk about hook, line and sinker. Iron Man 3 has one of the most ingenious plot twists in cinema history. I never thought the Mandarin would translate well on the big screen, but Ben Kingsley really pulled it off. The first Iron Man started the whole series with a bang, but this one ends with an all-out explosion.
  11. Finally got to watch this movie, and I have to say that it's a disappointment. What's supposed to be a potentially good mobster flick ended up being a Tombstone ripoff set in the 1940s, with Josh Brolin trying too hard to be Wyatt Earp and Ryan Gosling being a watered-down Doc Holliday. The dialogue is mediocre at best, the gunfights seem rushed and the ending feels forced. Even the deleted theater shooting scene wouldn't save this movie from being a strict rental at most. Looks like it's back to watching L.A. Confidential, The Untouchables and Public Enemies.
  12. Because Super Sentai is still a niche market for adult collectors. The shows don't get ratings as high as Kamen Rider, so Bandai feels it's too risky to sell every Super Sentai character on a retail basis. However, there is a chance that Bluefin USA may have this on Toys "R" Us shelves later this year.
