  2. How The Last Starfighter Became a Cult Classic - And Why a Sequel May Finally Take Flight This is a rather long-ass article, so we'll cut to the chase. The following notes are mentioned, but are not confirmed, as they conflict with each other: - The theatrical and home media distribution rights are with Universal Pictures. - The film was produced by Lorimar Pictures, which was absorbed into Warner Bros. Pictures in 1992; therefore, WB owns international distribution rights. - Universal supposedly has the rights to remake the film. - Writer Jonathan Betuel has the rights to make sequels. - Universal and WB each supposedly have remake and sequel rights.
  3. As predicted on the box office, the general public went to watch some fat Aussie chick instead of this film. Friday Box Office Estimates
  4. Yo-Kai Watch (妖怪ウォッチ) Level-5/OLM Digital/Dentsu/TV Tokyo, 2014-present Coming to America in 2016 via Dentsu USA and Hasbro Directed by Shinji Ushiro (Strait Jacket, Blessing of the Campanella) Created by Level-5 (Dark Cloud, Inazuma Eleven) Running Time: 24 minutes per episode Not Rated (suggested TV-Y7). Contains some crude humor and mild language. Cast Haruka Tomatsu (Mileina in Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Micott in Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn) as Keita Amano Tomokazu Seki (Domon in Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Van in The Vision of Escaflowne) as Whisper Etsuko Kozakura (Ryo-ohki in Tenchi Muyo!, Tamama in Keroro Gunso) as Jibanyan Aya Endo (Sheryl Nome in Macross Frontier, Mirai Kamiki in Gundam Build Fighters Try) as Fumika "Fumi" Kodama Toru Nara as Gorota "Kuma" Kumashima Chie Satou (Bo-chan in Crayon Shin-chan) as Kanchi Imada Synopsis On a hot summer day, while hunting for insects, Keita Amano stumbles upon an old gashapon machine by a tree. Upon acquiring a capsule, he unleashes a ghost named "Whisper", who gives him a "Yo-Kai Watch" - a device that enables him to see other supernatural spirits. Together with the ghost cat Jibanyan, Keita and Whisper set off to solve supernatural problems around town. Story: B For the past year or so, Yo-Kai Watch has become the most popular children's anime in Japan, with every tourist spot selling souvenirs with Jibanyan on them (even more so than Hello Kitty or any other established character). The theatrical feature released last Christmas broke box-office records to earn over US$55 million. So what's the fuss? Nothing, really. Yo-Kai Watch is simply Pokémon with ghosts. You have your typical adolescent protagonist teamed up with a couple of mascots. But after watching the first couple of episode, you realize how down-to-earth the storylines are. Episode 1 deals with a ghost who is miserable because of an argument with her husband, so she indirectly causes Keita's parents to fight over, well, pudding. And it's up to Keita to sort things out with the ghost. Yeah, this is all silly stuff, but it works out very well in this series. Perhaps the show-stealer is Jibanyan, a ghost that haunts a crosswalk because he was once a cat that was hit by a truck years ago. The impact must have been so great that he doesn't remember his former name. Because of the incident, he struggles to stop every truck crossing that intersection, only to end up on the other side of town. Once you get to know the truth behind the incident, you'll definitely tear up. Animation: B Nothing really special about the animation and character designs, but for something designed for children, this will suffice. Soundtrack: B Try getting the opening theme out of your head. I challenge you. Sub vs. Dub Coming in 2016. The Bottom Line Yo-Kai Watch is already a massive hit in Japan, but will it be the next Pokémon when it arrives Stateside? Only time will tell. 5. As part of my Japan trip last week, I picked up the Japanese video release of Frozen. So here's a quick review: Anna to Yuki no Jo-oh (アナと雪の女王) Walt Disney Animation Studios/Walt Disney Pictures, 2013, 2014 Directed by Chris Buck (Tarzan, Surf's Up) and Jennifer Lee (Wreck-It Ralph, A Wrinkle in Time) Written by Chris Buck, Jennifer Lee, and Shane Morris Based on The Snow Queen by Hans Christian Andersen Music by Christophe Beck (The Peanuts Movie, Ant-Man) Songs by Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez (The Book of Mormon, Winnie the Pooh) Running Time: 102 minutes Rated PG for some violence and scary images. Cast (Japanese) Sayaka Kanda as Princess Anna of Arendelle Takako Matsu as Queen Elsa of Arendelle Shinichiro Hara as Kristoff Pierre Taki as Olaf Eisuke Tsuda as Prince Hans of the Southern Isles Yohei Tadano as the Duke of Weselton Motomu Azaki as Grand Pabbie the Troll King Overview The Japanese release of Frozen is in Disney's 3-in-1 MovieNEX package: Blu-ray Disc + DVD + Digital Copy (cloud compatible). Both Blu-ray and DVD versions have the film available in English and Japanese. Picture quality is no different from the U.S. release, except in the Japanese dub, the opening title screen and Wandering Oaken's Trading Post (and Sauna) sign are digitally reprinted in Japanese (the English dub retains all of the original English logos and signs). As for the Japanese dub, it's amazing. I can't really say it's completely better than the English dialogue, but there's a lot more emotion coming from the voices of Sayaka Kanda and Takako Matsu on their songs. Pierre Taki is not as funny as Josh Gad in the role of Olaf, but then again, that's a very hard act to follow. For extras, the DVD version contains the Mickey Mouse short Get a Horse!, plus the music videos for the English, Spanish, Italian, and Malaysian versions of "Let It Go", and the film's first teaser. These features are also available on the Blu-ray version, plus a short live-action musical number featuring Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad, and Kristen Bell, production videos, and deleted scenes. You also receive a "Magic Code" that gives you access to exclusive content in the MovieNEX Club website. The Bottom Line If you don't mind forking out the extra cash, get the Japanese Frozen MovieNEX package, as the Japanese dub is worth every yen. And while you're at it, knock yourself out with the countless Frozen merchandise in Japan. Rating: A
  6. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) Shortly after surviving a deadly sandstorm, Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) confronts Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) and Immortan Joe's Five Wives and with shotgun in hand, orders them to give him water and break the chain attached between him and War Boy Nux (Nicholas Hoult) and a car door. One small distraction causes Furiosa to briefly knock him down, and they both get into an intense melee with Nux waking up from unconsciousness and joining in the fray over a loaded Glock pistol. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxZ90pP-Bas
  7. Maybe it's a feminist film behind a post-apocalyptic storyline and maybe there wasn't enough interaction with Max, but Mad Max: Fury Road is easily the best action film this year. It's everything we should have gotten 30 years ago instead of that watered-down snooze-fest called Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome: tons of vehicular carnage and post-apocalyptic chaos. Tom Hardy does a very good job filling Mel Gibson's shoes as Max. Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult do steal the show with their performances, though. Despite not having much screen time, Immortan Joe may very well be a more menacing villain than Toecutter or The Humungus. Overall, Fury Road is George Miller's way of saying he's sorry for Beyond Thunderdome and Happy Feet. Apology accepted.
  8. Slightly OT, but since there's no boxing thread, here's an accurate adaptation of the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao match on Punch-Out!.
