Gubaba, thank you for all the hard work you've put into this research. After learning that you've uncovered lies from Shaloom dating back to 2008, I have to wonder just how long has Shaloom been making up information. 2007? 2006? 2002? While he may have given the community some legitimate information in the past, he's lost all credibility and I'm going to assume that any and all information that came from him is bogus. It's going to be impossible to fact-check every bit of information that he's posted, especially when you've shown that he also has a habit of completely falsifying his sources and referring to arcane doujins that may or may not exist (Egan Loo has warned the community about using doujins for serious research). What I'm concerned about is Shaloom's lies resurrecting themselves in the future through unsuspecting fans. I'm glad that you're going to document all of your research into a single file, but I fear that this may eventually get lost in the forum, whether through noise or a forum update. Have you considered contributing your research to the Compendium? Obviously Shaloom and this controversy do not belong in the Compendium, but the facts that you've uncovered do. For example, under the Hiroshi Ohnogi entry (if one hasn't already been created), you could list the Macross productions that Ohnogi has actually worked on. And if you're feeling a little saucy, you could even write "Hiroshi Ohnogi has not worked on Macross Plus and Macross Frontier." Naturally, make sure to cite your work. I'm sure Shaloom would appreciate it.

I highly doubt that would ever happen. First off, no one knows if Warner Bros/Maguire Entertainment is content with their license. Second, if WB/ME does feel that they were deceived, the burden of proof would fall on WB/ME, not Harmony Gold. WB/ME would have to prove, beyond a doubt, that HG materially misrepresented themselves. That would be difficult to prove if HG claimed that it was just a misunderstanding. Third, WB/ME's legal fees could easily outweigh their initial investment. -
I don't believe anyone is tired of interviews, just as long as they're verifiable. While it's entirely plausible that the interview may have been fabricated, it's important to know that that website is the original source. One of the many problems with the Ohnogi conspiracy is that there are no verifiable or original sources, just second-hand "information." That said, if you're feeling up to it, we'd love to have more cited translations. I'm especially curious about the "hate induced by Macross 7" since it's my understanding that Macross 7 was well-received in Japan. Ironically, the stories chronicled in the Parallel World suddenly appear more concrete than the "dramatizations" we've seen of the canon chronology.

Kawamori's Frontier Episode Commentary
TheLoneWolf replied to Gubaba's topic in Movies and TV Series
I understand why you chose to go with "diva," but I believe that "songstress" would be a better long-term option. I say "long-term" because I've noticed that sports and entertainment journalists have begun to increasingly associate "diva" with a negative connotation. For example, "T.O. threw a diva-like temper tantrum when the coach benched him." If this connotation persists, future readers may mistakenly believe that Sheryl is a publically acknowledged "b1tch" in the Frontier universe. You make a very good point, it would explain why Ramaria's death seemed oddly placed, at least to me anyways. -

It's not as simple as that. US courts would not allow Warner Bros. to pay compulsory royalties in order to get around copyright infringment, doing so would deprive Big West of the power to control their intellectual property. The court would allow Big West to file an injunction, effectively forcing production to halt (see A&M Records Inc v Napster Inc). -

Translated credits would be awesome! I love reading production notes in general, and Macross is my favorite since English information on it is so scarce. Thanks for these translations and for listing your source. I've got a funny feeling that we'll soon be able to sweep this Ohnogi Conspiracy nonsense under the carpet. -
I love those poses! But is it just me, or did Yamato use two noticably different shades of tan on Kakizaki? The tan on the sides of his legs look much lighter than the tan used elsewhere.

Some members have hinted that Big West sometimes browses this board, though I've never seen a shred of evidence supporting this. -

What you describe actually resembles the ending to Robotech the Movie. Replace Scott Bernard with Mark Landry (Shogo) and Corg with B.D. Andrews (B.D.), and you've pretty much got the ending to the Movie. Your hometown, Houston, was also one of the few places that screened Robotech the Movie. Is it possible that your memory is simply juxtaposing the two? -

I agree that a slimmer PS3 is the next logical step, but I don't think those pictures are legit. It's way too early for a slimmer PS3, the system isn't even 3 years old yet. I could believe that the plastic case might be an early prototype, but the mocked up box is just too much to swallow.

Can't argue with that, the Japanese know how to package their DVD's!
-
One of the older Japanese DVD's has a new English dub for vol.4, and in it David Hayter provides Isamu's voice. Mind you, he doesn't make Isamu sound like Snake. I thought that dub was pretty weak, the voice acting lacked energy and the lip-synching was totally off in some scenes. It's only saving grace was that it was a little more faithful to the sub, but that might explain why the lip-synching was off.

I don't know how long it's been since that novel has been published, but it seems like they do get reprinted every couple of years. -

You do make a very good point. However, Harmony Gold is still using their "Macross" trademark on novels in the USA. -
Robotech and HG License Debates
TheLoneWolf replied to TheLoneWolf's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
First off, IANAL. One of Harmony Gold's US trademarks for "Macross" covers novellas, so they could reasonably claim jurisdiction. In this case, whether or not the DYRL Novelization can be considered a "novella" is up to a judge to determine. Whoever would be publishing this Novelization should be prepared to enter litigation, which may very well exceed the cost of actually publishing the book. Second, as for Harmony Gold getting "a cut," no, they don't necessarily need to be compensated. Harmony Gold can flat out deny the use of its "Macross" trademark to anyone. Third, if anyone actually still has the international film distribution right to DYRL, those rights would not extend to the Novelization, so they would not be a party to its publication. -

I call shenanigans on that BS. Dozens of us have offered to help out with the main site, but Shawn's never responded. If Shawn's too busy to visit the forums regularly, then I highly doubt that he has the time to actively seek out Doug Bendo. Perhaps he meant the forums? But anyone can write anything on these forums, it's not like it's a big deal. -
veffidas, I have to agree that the deck is most likely a bootleg. Anyways, since this is a Collectors forum, I decided to take a picture of the official Animage deck (not all shown). Unlike the previous deck, these are copyrighted. The good thing about the Animage deck is that it has glorious Mikimoto pencils. Unfortunately it's made from low quality paper stock, has no waxy coating, no texturing, and is considerably smaller than your standard poker cards. With a few rough shuffles, this deck will be ruined. Then again, I believe this deck was given away for free with Animage back in '83, so you get what you pay for. For those that are curious, I've also posted a size comparison shot between the two Macross cards and a standard poker card.

Somehow, I get the impression that the Moon is little more important to the Earth than Ontario. Though some of our Canadian members may disagree. -

They weren't kidding when they said that Macross was originally supposed to be a goofy series. -
Here's a pic of my deck (not all cards shown). In the upper-left corner is the clear plastic jewel case it came in, and next to it is what the backs of all the cards look like. In the lower-right corner is a standard poker card for comparisons sake. Note that the standard poker card is only a few centimeters larger than the Macross cards. Like Totoro242 said, there's no Big West sticker or copyright anywhere on any of the cards, so they might be bootlegs. But these cards are still superbly made! There's no pixelation or artifacts on any of the cards artwork, the cards feel like they're made from quality paper stock, and the cards all have a nice waxy coating with very slight texturing. If these are indeed bootlegs, then they're excellent boots, well worth the $10 I paid back in the day. My only complaint is that most of the cards feature Macross 7 artwork. I would've preferred it if the cards represented all of the Macross series equally, but since this deck was released when M7 was still popular in Japan, I guess it's not much of a shock.

Macross Big West non-canon mecha and technology thread
TheLoneWolf replied to RedWolf's topic in Movies and TV Series
That's ok Seto Kaiba, it's only a matter of time before this thread devolves into a mess over how much Macross II sucks and how Macross II should be imbedded into the Kawamori timeline. -
Nope. I truly believe that everyone in this thread will respect your wishes. But once clean scans, with all of the Japanese text removed, are released onto the web, you can be sure that someone on 4chan or elsewhere will replace the paraphrased English text with your word-for-word translations.

Macross Big West non-canon mecha and technology thread
TheLoneWolf replied to RedWolf's topic in Movies and TV Series
I don't think so. IIRC, the storyline in the game's booklet only referenced DYRL. But honestly, the booklet's story was so lacking in details that it was obviously just an attempt to cash in on the Macross name, whoever came up with it wasn't trying to contribute any new plot points to the timeline, so I consider SV to be in its own isolated timeline.
