I don't think Bandai Visual has anything to be concerned about. While sampling the Ghostbusters audio clip is an infringement of Columbia Pictures' copyright, it's such a trivial infringement that it would probably be deemed de minimus, thus not actionable. The fact that Gunbuster has been around for 23 years and Columbia Pictures still hasn't noticed or cared only serves to reinforce a de minimus infringement. Also, it's unlikely that Bandai Visual knowingly contributed to this infringement or is even aware of it. Furthermore, Bandai's removal of the "Chariots of Fire" song actually demonstrates that they've attempted to be proactive in preventing copyright infringement. Good faith efforts like that reflect well upon Bandai. If future releases of Gunbuster end up missing that Ghostbusters audio clip, we'll now know who to blame. And to get this thread somewhat back on track, the cease and desists that Hikuro's fandubs have received may indicate that Bandai Visual and/or Toei currently possess DYRL's distribution rights outside of Japan.

$65 sounds about right to me. From my experiences, you won't find too much of a price difference between proxy bidders because all their profit margins are pretty slim. The only way to get a better price is to find someone in Japan who is practically willing to work for free.

Most likely, Bandai Visual's video distribution rights only apply to Japan. If they included English subtitles, that would indicate to Big West that they also intend to (indirectly) market their Blu-ray's in North America, which would incur a more expensive licensing fee from Big West. As for the cost of translations, I've contracted corporate Japanese-to-English translators in the past and can tell you that you'd be looking at roughly $2000 per TV episode. Translation rates vary depending on the source language and verbiage, and Japanese is one of the more expensive languages to translate into English, as opposed to others such as Spanish or French. If you apply that formula to episodic series like Frontier, that's a lot of money to invest. You guys have gotten spoiled by fansubbers doing this work for free.

Obviously nothing happened as a result of the Big West/Harmony Gold-Tatsunoko discussion(s). And while I'm sure we all have a pretty good idea of what was said between the parties involved, a first-hand account is always preferable to speculation.

It was never released on DVD, not even the bootleg DVD's have the English dub. But it was officially released here in the USA on VHS. The Japanese subtitles were even removed, so it's a clean video.

I have that LD and yes, it's essentially the uncut version of Clash of the Bioniods, complete with the same awful English dub. Though to describe it more accurately, it's an officially licensed English dub of the theatrical version of Macross: Do You Remember Love. It's also got Japanese subtitles hard coded onto the video, so you can't turn them off. And that $2000 auction is a rip-off. I won it in an auction a few months ago for $12.

According to Save, the Fuke prototype that was shown was directly printed off of Beagle's CAD. I also don't believe that any set of molds were ever made for Fuke. Considering that steel molds require a huge financial investment, if Beagle had them already paid for them, I'd imagine that they would've gone ahead and manufactured Fuke in an effort to recoup part of their investment. -
I have Lynn Minmay's Final Message, which came with a limited amount of copies of Macross: Do You Remember Love for the PS1. I'm strictly a beginner when it comes to Japanese, but from I could read, her e-mail mentions a journey involving a "Dark Hole." I presume a "Dark Hole" is synonymous in Japanese with Black Holes. One thing to keep in mind is whether this message is actually canon. It's not credited to any real-world author, so who knows if it was written by an actual member of the Macross staff or some random Sony marketing person.

You should be given the title "Official Builder of Moscato models" Btw, be careful when using those clear-tip Flexi stands. I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. IIRC, our prohibition against posting scans from Macross the First, Ace, et al was merely a gentleman's agreement amongst us members, not an official MW policy. You can try asking Shawn or the mods to make it an actual rule, but I don't see that happening. If you want to know why Big West isn't pushing any more Macross products in the USA, you should read this post. Though I don't recommend reading the rest of the comments in that thread, unless you want to kill off some of your brain cells.

Interesting discussion on the Philippine version of Macross. As we know, Carl Macek's original plan was to release a faithful version of Macross here in the USA. But since USA networks strongly recommended that syndicated TV shows be 65 episodes or more, we Americans got Robotech instead. If the Philippine networks had no 65 episode model to follow, then that would explain why Harmony Gold released Macross over there as Macross, and not Robotech. As for Mospeada and Southern Cross, since they wound up being cancelled in Japan, perhaps Harmony Gold thought it would best to rebrand them as Robotech and give them another shot in the Philippines. For those of you who saw the Philippine Macross, did it refer to Protoculture as a fuel? I'm guessing there was no mention of Zor, nor the Robotech Masters either?

You could just add a "Null / Nobody" vote to each category so that folks aren't forced to vote for a female character from every series. That won't stop people from having multiple "valentines," but hey, this poll is just for fun.

Love the VF-22 cel, especially since it's from the last Macross production to feature predominantly hand-drawn and colored animation.

I can think of a few reasons. The relative ease of producing modern podcasts means that more people are capable of doing it. Which means you're going to get more idiots producing podcasts than before. Since the Robotech franchise has been stagnant for several years, there's little motivation for ordinary fans to start up their own podcasts, as opposed to obnoxious fans who are simply seeking attention. Any kind of attention. Most likely, there are simply less Macross fans than Robotech fans in the USA. In a wholly unscientific survey, the last time I checked Facebook groups 2 or 3 years ago, there were more Robotech groups than Macross groups. And the actual membership size of the Robotech groups dwarfed the Macross groups.

I'm no expert on Japanese law, but I've noticed a recent trend where Japanese copyright law is being strictly enforced by their court system. And from my limited knowledge of Japanese copyright law itself, it seems like it's crafted in a very strict manner with few exemptions. In the past, it may have appeared that their copyright laws were somewhat relaxed, but that was probably because Japanese copyright holders weren't as litigious as they are now. If a case is brought before a Japanese court, and if the law offers almost no protection to a copyright infringer, then the judges have no choice but to enforce the law as it's written. To me, the problem appears to be two-fold. First, Japanese law should be revised so as to strike a healthy balance between copyright holders and users. Second, Japanese copyright holders should be more judicious in picking their legal fights. While both situations constitute copyright infringement, a one-off custom toy should not be prosecuted to the same extent as a bootlegger who manufactures hundreds of toys.
