Dragon Ball movie rescued from dev hell?
yellowlightman replied to bsu legato's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Part of me wonders if all of the "fans" hating on this movie are expecting a serious Dragon Ball Z action film, rather than a film based on the original Dragon Ball story which was a stupid, goofy comic. Literature it was not, and this movie captures that pretty well. If anything, the hate reeks of OMG HOLLYWOOD RUINING PRECIOUS JAPANESE CARTOONS, without really taking into consideration how stupid and silly the comic was in the first place. That works for comments like the "characters aren't accurate," what are you expecting, blue hair on Bulma? Have you seen cosplayers with colored wigs? They look terrible. -

New After Dragonball Z One shot

Fansubs were out the first day of release, I expect they're just using Funimations subs so they're quick. No movie. Just an HD transfer, new voice track and some editing to take out dirty frames, cut down on filler and make it closer to the manga. -

Art criticism coming from the guy who did the Lil' Valk comics. That's rich. -

The Sentinels comics were generally well received by fans, and it must have been considering the series ran for over 70 issues. Return to Macross was "brief" in that it ran for over 35 issues. The art remained the same throughout the Sentinels series, as the same artists (the Waltrip brothers) were on board from issue #1 until Academy published the last issue around issue #72. They handled the writing as well for the Academy run, although I'm not sure if they had started writing the series near the end of it's Eternity run. -

Watched the first episode and I gotta say, I liked it. I'm no basketball fan, but I don't think you need to be to enjoy it. The production quality is great, and the design work looks fantastic-- thanks to Thomas Romain. The characters are a mixed bag; there's the obligatory moe girl, the big-breasted side kick and a main character who looks like he walked out of a generic shonen series. Hopefully it'll do better than Frontier and actually do something interesting with the characters, rather than just throwing them in to pander to different demographics. Also, I'm trying to figure out in what world most of Kawamori's works aren't a bit "silly." Sorry, was Frontier hard sci-fi? -
Agreed. The Fett legacy getting shoehorned into the Prequels always felt stupid and forced, like fanbait.

Dragon Ball movie rescued from dev hell?
yellowlightman replied to bsu legato's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Friend of mine wanted to see this, so we went on the cheap movie day (1000yen). It was hilarious. Almost intentionally so. Certainly entertaining enough that I didn't feel like I wasted my money. I would wager that compared to other comic book adaptions, Dragonball is probably better than most. I certainly enjoyed it more than I enjoyed any super hero movie I've seen, but then I realize that Dragonball is a dumb comic and don't freak out because OMG IT'S NOT A FAITHFUL ADAPTION. The dumbest moment was probably when they listed Dragonball as a "graphic novel" in the credits. Bad enough that stupid label gets brought out for stuff like Watchmen, but for Dragonball? Give me a break. It's still a bad movie, but it could have been a lot worse... Just be thankful it wasn't done by the Japanese film industry. -

Well, considering that there are only two anime magazines left in the US (well, one's technically Canadian) it shouldn't be too hard to pick! -

It actually looks kind of interesting. I'll give the first episode or two a watch. -
In the original BGC RPG book by R Talsorian, all of one picture was drawn by artists at the RTalsorian. In the follow up books they did touch up work to clean up some rough sketches, but that art is pretty much all from ARTMIC sources.

The airsoft influence is pretty obvious, between the gucci gear and choices like the Mk 14. -

Anime of the decade. And I'm totally serious when I say that. It looks awesome. Oddly violent. Well animated. Vaguely racist. Hell yes. -
While the movie kind of bored me (and generally I love Oshii films), if nothing else I dig it because it's so radically different from mainstream, "normal" anime productions. It's the kind of animated film you really don't see coming from the mainstream anime industry these days. Or back then either, really.
