Thinking about working in Japan
yellowlightman replied to Pat Payne's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
NOVA is the largest private eikawa (english school) in Japan, and I've known a few peopel who've worked there. All have told me it's a pretty miserable job. The NOVA curriculum isn't designed to teach english, it's designed to keep people coming back and giving them money. The company shuffles employees and students around fairly regularly so that students and teachers don't make any lasting relationships (platonic or otherwise). Some people get hired for NOVA just to get the work visa and after a month or two quit. Others hang onto to the job because it pays decently well, but they don't enjoy it. I wouldn't worry too much about needing to learn Japanese for the job, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't. II'd ask yourself why is it exactly that you want to teach english and why you want to live in Japan. Have you visited the country before? Before commiting to working there I'd recommend taking a vacation there first to get a feel for the country. It isn't all just manga and anime and there are lots of things that might wear on you or cause you to be miserable. I'd recommend posting on some Foreigner-in-Japan specific forums, you'd get much better info than posting on an anime board and some first hand experiences. Try www.fartedgaijin.com or www.japantoday.com for starters. -
If you spent half the time you spend making whiny/angry/negative posts and use that time to make a board skin, you'd have a rockin' skin by now. If you want one so bad, make it yourself. I mean, really, obviously the current design doesn't bother too much or else we'd see some sort of skin project going on.

I'm sure muscle cars with transplanted suspensions handle considerably better than they originally did, but they're still not going to handle better than the newer cars designed from the drawing board to use those suspension set ups. Larger, heavier cars simply aren't going to handle as well as smaller, nimbler cars with modern suspension. As for the "I've seen X beat Y" evidence, so much is dependent on driver skill it's really not a good basis for comparison. My friend's 94 325is with coilovers sitting a few inches off the ground passed Vipers, Z06s and Porsche GT2s at the last track event he went do. Does that mean his 20 year old 325 is a better car or handles better? No.

Most definately Gundam got the idea from Star Wars. Tomino has even said as much mentioning the popularity of Star Wars at the time. (not to mention: Star Wars 1976, Gundam 1979...)

Quick question about Star Trek
yellowlightman replied to stram8777's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I think in the Trek universe the colors are justified as red -> command, tan -> security/engineering, blue -> medical. It's been forever since Ive watched any Trek so I'm going off of memory... -
I think V8s are awesome as are muscle cars, but I'd have a hard time driving one for a daily or even as a "fun" car. The problem is that with all that old charmand fun comes wrapped up with old technology. As impressive as those big boats can be in a straight line, you really start to feel the age of the muscle cars when you start to turn the wheel. The sluggish handling and poor suspension, I enjoy whipping my cars around corners too much to drive one of those as a daily. Engine wise though, I don't view either smaller or bigger motos as "better." Older V8s have torque, simplicity and cheap aftermarket parts. Smaller engines have top end fun (as we rotary guys say "redline a day keeps the caron lock away"), fuel efficiency and weight. Different trade offs, just depends on what you're looking for.

Absolutely! Just turn it off 2 min before the end. You don't want to see the end. Hah, exactly. The end was... I dunno, just left you with that "WTF?" feeling. Regardless, the chase sequences are amazing and right up there with the Bullitt chase scene in terms of cinematic beauty.

Definately not the first anime to be made into a CCG, anyone remember Ani-Magic the CCG with Bubblegum Crisis and Tenchi Muyo? Still though... I didn't know people still played CCGs. Welcome to 1998.

Mini Coopers are the essence of cool. Easily one of the most influential cars of the 20th century (following behind the Model T and Volkswagen Bug) not to mention having an impressive racing history. With the Type R engine they'd be wicked fast, semi-reliable and still have the handling that made them legendary. If I had the cash to drop on a "fun" car, it'd definately be near the top of my list. Those who still disagree the Mini isn't "cool," I'd recommend you check out The Italian Job (the original).

A little joke for you.....

Sweet. French jokes... no one's ever done that before! -
Those Minis are nothing new, but very, very cool.

PSP Official Discussion thread.
yellowlightman replied to bandit29's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
I totally agree, between all the coke and hookers in my life I often forget to recharge my electronics. I recharge my digital camera about once a month, so I'm quite thankful for it's longevity. It's easy to say that 4-6 hours is "enough" but people forget, you get stuck on long plane trips or in traffic or whatever. It's nice to have the extra time. -
MacrossWorld Con 5 location
yellowlightman replied to mechatek's topic in Conventions and Local Gatherings
I'll definately try to make it down for the con this year, I was bummed about missing last years con. -
Much of the dialogue awkwardness stems from the fact that Tatsunoko provided in-house script translations and asked that HG follow the original scripts as much as possible, so many of those ridiculous lines are the fault of Tatsunoko, not HG.

What will those crazy Japanese think of next
yellowlightman replied to Otaku-Smeghead's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I doubt they could have developed military technology even if they wanted... the allied countries pretty much neutered Japan in that aspect after WWII ended. You see my point, though: you can work on creating something that may one day save lives, or you can have a shinier cellphone! Of course, the technologies are vastly different, but still.... Shinier cellphones = more money. It's called capitalism. And Japan has the 4th-highest military budget in the world, so they're not exactly skimping on that, either. -
Read 'em and weep Fellow Battletech fans!
yellowlightman replied to Skull Leader's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
You bear a striking resemblance to one of my buddies. -
Tatsunoko was definately involved as they were handling the animation and much of the writing (at least initially, until Macek/HG grew annoyed with how they were handling the characters and switched to American writers). It's also commoly known that unused designs from Southern Cross were scheduled be used in the Sentienels. But really, I don't it was ever planned to be a sequel to Mospeada or Southern Cross. Carl Macek goes into depth about the creation of the Sentinels in Robotech Art III and as far as I can remember, never mentions plans to use it as a sequel to either of those series. I think the visual similarities between the Sentinels and Southern Cross come more from Tatsunoko's direct involvement; their desire to use unused designs and perhaps viewed it as a spiritual sucessor to Southern Cross. Given how poorly Southern Cross was received, I doubt very much a sequel would have been feasible or even worthwhile.

latest non-macross from: YAMATO?
yellowlightman replied to Feyd-Rautha's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Er, Yamato has already confirmed these toys... -
That was the plan for "Sentinels" if that was going to be sucessful. Tatsunoko was going to release that series as a Mospeada or Southern Cross sequel/prequel. Er, what? Do you have a source for that? Neither Mospeada or Southern Cross were really successful (Mospeada enought to justify a OAV, but Southern Cross just got cancelled early).
-
Trust me, it has gone beyond that... Yeah, whatever. As Exo said that footage is at such an early stage hating on it because of it's current merits is downright ridiculous. It will no doubt be lame, but saying that it's going to be lame based on those clips (opposed to HG's general half-assery) is just stupid fanboy whining. If that stuff had a Macross logo on it you'd all be drooling over it.

Have you heard about DAICON Films?
yellowlightman replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
DaiCon was a Japanese sci-fi convention which Gainax (or it's early founders) did many of the opening animations for (er, anime shown during its opening ceremony). EDIT: Just watched the clip on the website, really got a kick out of all the visual influences from Macross. -
Er, is that anything new? Star Wars has always been a merchandising whore. Is Episode III really any different than before?
