Well, if the Iranians are putting it on display, that means the Russians and the Chinese have already been all over it. This thing might be a mock up for all we know, it looks really too intact to have crashed or anything like that, may be it ran out of fuel, and luckily glided onto a runway or something. Either that, or the Iranians are telling the truth, and they've somehow co-opted control of the RQ-170, and managed something close to a landing. I doubt if there will be any real covert actions over this. What is surprising to me is that these things don't have a self destruct built in. This isn't the first instance that unmanned drones have been lost due to failure to communicate. One would've thought that with a system this sensitive, self destruct mechanism would've been a necessity. If nothing else, to save the embarrassment of this display. Geez, been losing a lot of classified tech this year in the middle east.

what an interesting story from Iran regarding the RQ-170. http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/envoy/iran-releases-images-downed-u-spy-drone-171144210.html From what you can see, it looks literally like the plane decided to find an Iranian air field and land. This is the weirdest thing.

Apparently they lost the Beast of Kandahar... assuming of course there was only one of those operating in Afghanistan. RQ-170 down though doesn't sound quite as dramatic as Blackhawk down.

Didn't see Turn A, actually had heard a few decent things about a good story line. But G:S and G:SD are basically rehash, and as for 00, I liked it for just the first few episodes, and then it got old. Bring back the less whiney pilots, please.

Hmm interesting, I guess it's the look up and see the sky, and look down and see the sea scheme. what happens though if this thing is over land? Should paint it pink though to add in the element of surprise to the enemy. heh heh

There is no doubt on that last sentence, but still, for a Gundam show, it's a very solid effort, after all, you may not have witnessed the Gundam abortions from the last decade, so everything is relative. Unicorn far outstrips those previous efforts. Now that said; I can kind of see the character evolving this way, you have to remember that this is a Gundam show, so it's all about why must we fight? In only a few Gundam shows has the idea of war is bad being relegated to the backseat. This is also par for the course on Gundam shows, it just wouldn't be a normal Gundam show without a teenager who is shoved into a bad situation, and then becomes an idealist in the process. I will say that all things considered, Banagher is doing what typical Gundam kids do, the only question is whether he'll follow up on things to their logical conclusion like Amuro did, and Amuro ended up doing pretty well... well, actually, I guess he is dead, so not really. Speaking of Gundam characters, I'm always curious to know what the heck ever happened to the other main characters in the UC universe, technically, most of them should still be alive and kicking. 0096 is not even 20 years after the OYW.

It must be just me, but I really don't like Ridde, a whiny bitch no matter how you look at it. But with our luck, he'll probably survive the series. It's pretty interesting though to see how the Zeons fared with those old suits, they didn't do too badly all things considered.

That's ok, it was a part that he wasn't using anyway. I like the movies since it's a nice spin on the series. Just the same way that DYRL was a spin on "reality" But it certainly make it seem like the M quarter design was widely spread through the galaxy, although there are lots of variations on it. Glow in the dark parts on some, and way overgunned on others. The one thing that I would like to see the Macross series remedy a little is the large disparity between the cannon fodder (stealth destroyers, carriers, etc) and the actual Macross battle carriers (hero ships I guess). There really is nothing in between (if you don't count the Zentradi ships) until quarter came along, and that's still a hero ship. The titles not withstanding, the cannon fodder just doesn't have the same scale of capabilities from the looks of things. Feels like you have a navy with one battleship, a thousand patrol boats, and nothing in between. The notable bright spot in this during the MF series was that there were actually some VF-17I that was more than cannon fodder in ep 14.

Ah the Blue Angles, just got to see them last month at Fleet Week, they are something to behold.

Star Wars: Clone Wars animated series
kalvasflam replied to BoBe-Patt's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Been watching the clone wars on and off, and I like the last two episodes. Reminds me that there is actually a war going on, less droids, less bitchy Padme, and no frigging Jar jar. Just get me clones, and stuck up jedi. I would like to see Dooku or Grevious take down old four arms, poetic justice especially if the clones just watch on and do nothing.- 1217 replies

As a famous and probably the "BEST" president once said: "BRING IT ON" Heh heh, it is more than likely that humans would become very hard pressed, very fast. You just had to look at episode 25 to see how badly it would've come out for the humans, albeit, Grace/Galaxy cabal knew the location of every human outpost, so while humans might have had isolated victories, Vajra would just zerg swarm humans to death. You just had to look at Macross 11 to see that no one would've been safe.

Which can be easily remedied with multiple macross cannons and dimension eaters.

I saw the cinematics for the game, and then looking at the actual gameplay and engine aspects, almost makes me wish I had the time to play again. It's Bioware, and I don't know how they intend to make the story driven engine work, but if they can pull it off, it'll be great. Ah well, hopefully they'll seed this with enough interesting history items like what happened to Revan, the exile, all of the stuff left unanswered in KOTOR, and of course, I thought HK47 is making at least some appearance, that alone I think is worth the price of admission.

Live Action Space Battleship Yamato
kalvasflam replied to capt.actionjackson's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Well, that Rebirth movie was a little more of the jumping the shark than usual. The interesting thing is that the beginning of the movie was fairly logical, but then logic takes a leap out of the window with how the blackhole and the SUS is related. As usual, the movie is too mother Earth/humanity centric... and the aliens were well... their logic was alien. One would hope that these aliens don't make another appearance if there is indeed a follow on movie- 450 replies

I love the Seed universe.... in its own context But thankfully, this universe is done, even if it felt like one big gigantic fan service to people who didn't know what they wanted.- 3717 replies

Gundam Show Thread - MSG thru GQuuuuuuX
kalvasflam replied to Black Valkyrie's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Ah Seed, how I miss that AU.... ok, not really. The only thing that would garner my interest in the show is if Kira, Athrun, Lacus, basically the characters that ruined GSD died horrible on screen deaths within the first ten minutes of the show. You know, make the commercials all about them and some bit character.... kinda like Steven Segal in Executive Decision, except with blood and guts Now, where is the next Unicorn ep.- 3717 replies

Sad to see the show end, it was getting really decent the last few episodes. Too bad there is no chance of anyone picking up the show. Most of the characters really started to grow on me.

I'm just wondering, can annyone tell me what is the difference between these two books? http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/images/4797356944/ref=dp_image_z_0?ie=UTF8&n=465392&s=books and http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/richmedia/images/cover.gif sorry if this question has been asked already. But didn't see it in this thread. -
Hmmm, I thought this was a no-fly zone, not a "kill the tank zone" at least according one news report, there is action going on versus non-air defense assets. This is going to be a mess.
-
The No-Fly zone is going to be interesting to enforce. Basically, it'll be a US show again. For the Europeans, the problem is having enough tanker elements in place. The other alternative is carrier. The only recourse there for the Europeans is the French carrier, and if the regular air forces gets involved, there'll have to be a whole bunch of tankers staging out of Italy. Right now, the Brits nor the French are really up to it. So then, someone will have to depend on the US again, probably a combination of carriers and shooters backed up by US tankers. Wonder how much stuff they can stage out of Malta and Crete. Anyway, enough of the no-fly zone. Did anyone catch what Udvar-Hazy said? Boeing needs to sell 1500 787 just to break even. I said this a few years back, if Boeing screws it up, they will be in such a hole that they'll just wish they never started the program. Not surprisingly, they've given Airbus a lot of room to catch up.

Wow, how interesting, they listed estimated costs on the last line. It essentially said the production model of the J-20 is expected to be about half the cost of the F-22. Fun. It would make it just slightly cheaper than the F-35. Sign me up for the mass production version.
-
Random thought, I wonder if the J-20 would enable the JASDF to talk the US into an export version of the F-22. Yes, I'm still a die hard fan of the F-22, and I still want the production line to reopen. In response also to miles316. Yep, the DF-21 might be a paper tiger just like the J-20. But if it serves as a deterrence against US carriers from operating with impunity over a certain area, then it's accomplished its purpose. I think it certainly has forced US planners to think about a different threat dimension. However, if it really came to blows, the consequences would be horrific for all involved, if a DF-21 get in a lucky shot on a CVN, well, it has a nominal crew of about 6000 if I recall.
-
Oh, you're absolutely right about all of that stuff, especially how filling the skies with that many drones is counterproductive. I would think the ability to coordinate several hundred aerial assets at once is difficult already even if they are manned, don't know what the PLAAF experience is there, putting people in front of a video screen is probably a step beyond that, and I imagine it must be a nightmare to coordinate even a dozen Reapers in the same air space right now as some of the Pakistan operations are going, and that's a situation where there is no one shooting back at you. I do like the Xbox Air Force concept though, remember, in a few years, with the Kinect, people might not even have to have a real stick or a controller anymore. May be they can just make a random finger gesture, and off goes a missile in real life. Flying would really be like the Guld experience in the YF-21. I think China would just go with a long range tanker killer using their new J-20. Hmmm, where are the recessed missile bays anyway, it wasn't clear at just a glance. Oddly enough, the J-20 flew while good old Bob Gates was in China, talk about a slap in the face. But I'm leaning toward this more as a show horse than anything else, look at the background, those were frigging apartment buildings, probably with Chinese bloggers using telephoto lenses and trying to get the picture to Aviation Week. Even at a billion people, there are very remote regions in China where you would carry out flight tests away from prying eyes.
