Ah, ok, good points. I remember the beam cannon swiveling on the bottom of the fueslage, but for some reason I think it's on top in the Gerwalk mode. Would like to see the transformation sequence on the Drakken. -

The Drakkens do have fold capability right? I remember that from episode 1. I don't remember there being boosters on them, but they could've been discarded. One other thing that bugs me a little about the Drakkens, they seem to have this long ass beam cannon on their planes, except depending on the shots, you don't always see it, may be I'm just not looking carefully enough. -

What if they rebooted the original Macross series, like they did with Yamato. I wonder if that'll draw in a crowd. Of course, it's not as easy since there will be a temptation to "upgrade" the VF-1; or change the Regults and Quads. I'd like them to keep the story the same, but you can easily see some added materials, and we could do away with the one flashback episode and add something more to it. I would like that. But somehow, in today's world, I'm sure we'll get just the grunt VF-1s and then the super robot VF-1 or worse, a VF-2 model that was specially developed for the commander, but not in wide production yet type of deal. The other alternative that I wouldn't mind is a story centered around any of the last three series, but from a different perspective, imagine following along a grunt VF-1 pilot that wasn't a red shirt, he can have interactions with Hikaru, Foker, and so forth. Or how about a VF-17 pilot from Frontier who is stationed on one of the Uragas. Gundam has pulled off some of these side stories pretty well, 08th MS team, Thunderbolt, Igloo. The only complain I have on those is that every single one of them had unique mechs and super robot elements. I guess that's inevitable given the crushing need of Bandai to sell kits. If they can do a gundam every other year, why the hell can't they do a Macross every other year, the only element that'll be missing is the songs, and for that, you can always copy over Sheryl, Ranka, etc.- 240 replies

I am all for the evil twins shippiness from Windermere, oh, and how about the ship between Bogue and Master Hermann. Although honestly, I can't wait until all four of them and that Kakizaki wannabe whose name I can't even remember bite the dust in the most unceremonious way possible

Haha, as good an explanation as any. I sure hope the fold resonance plumbing is putting that pee somewhere sanitary and not just dumping it out in the atmosphere from the micro missile ports on the Drakken.- 240 replies

How would you characterize that for all of the canon fodders. No, the original series was very distinctive in the lack of hero fighters, and more true to what you'd expect out of a standard military. VF-1S is a command variant, just like there is a VF-25S, and -19S, and so forth. The point is, everyone pretty much flew the same type of fighters. Don't let a paint job fool you, everyone flew VF-1s. Consider this, would you see a hero fighter, if someone painted a VF-17I in Skull colors? As for the so called specialized gear, are you guys saying the strike pack couldn't be fitted onto other VF-1? Yikes... blasphemy. Ummm, in the original series, Minmay was irrelevant until the very end where she was part of culture shock, if you take the story in the grand context of human/Zentradi war, then she is negligible until the end. If you mean in the triangle sense, then yeah, she is relevant. The same is true with Ranka and Sherly. They were irrelevant to the Vajra war until people figured out that hey, Ranka could cause the Vajra to stop with her song. That they were important in the context of the Triangle I would agree. But clarifying here, the war in both cases were not impacted by them until a) The Zentradi suggested culture shock as a weapon. b) discovering Ranka could cause the Vajra to freeze up. Sure, there may be a science behind it, but if so, it only really gets codified in Delta. Otherwise, Frontier/Galaxy and all the other Macrosses would be running around looking for their own idol singer/super weapon. to SK: Aerial Knights are holding in their pee as they transit from point A to point B while their opposition doesn't understand what the mission was. Anyway, I for one would like to see an actual windermere planetary operation. They have to have more than just Aerial knights show up, there has got to be some form of occupation force. In ep 6, I honestly wasn't sure what I was seeing, 70% of local defense force overtaken... ok, then what, do the Aerial knights show up, and do the mop up of the remainder... and then, do the real Windermere military show up with ships and stuff? Windermere's military must be fantastically weak if they are rebuffed by a single carrier with just 15 fighters while they controlled 70% of the other side when they started the fight. sorry, I'm nitpicking here, but it's kind of fun until the next episode at least. I wonder if any of the secondary characters like the evil twin brothers are going to bite the dust, or is it too early yet. I'm pegging Hermann to be pineapple saladed by episode 15.- 240 replies

I'll go with a second post here since I want to separate out the song/culture portion from the VFs. The one bit that I am not very happy with on the series is the gradual evolution to hero fighters and the consistency in the military. In the original macross, everyone flew VF-1s; the difference might have been that some had custom paint jobs. Ok, I can understand that. But there was no VF-2 for Roy, VF-3 for Hikaru, etc. Everything was a logical extension of VF-1s. The fights were also very explainable, and massive in most cases. Mac+ was also very explainable, it was a fly off between the next generation fighters, hence the need for specialized fighters fighters. Mac7 was still very explainable, I can see regular VF-11 like stuff in the regular USAF, then Diamond force was like the F-117. The part that didn't fit was Basara. I actually think they could have pulled this off without him necessarily having the most advanced fighter in the fleet. I've never really bought the argument of him having the VF-19. Way too super robot for me, the stupid thing actually had a mouth. With Mac Frontier, Kawamori actually tried to explain why there was a hero fighter in the context of the SMS. I guess I can make a stretch in believing non-regular military having superior equipment... the story could've been done without VF-25s. Or with all VF-17s. Basically, the reason for the VF-25s was that someone could sell more toys, I think they could've done that anyway with upgraded VF-17s. I think they could've done more on the fights, because it seemed like for most of the series, Quarter had four VF-25s, Monster, plus a few Quads. You could say that make sense only in the context that Quarter never carried many fighters. But the hero fighters were the sole focus, everyone else was cannon fodder it seemed until about ep 13, when you actually see VF-17s killing off Vajra. I haven't seen enough of Mac Delta to decide how the VF-31 fit in just yet, it's good to see that they had some grunt units, because otherwise, the Aether would've have been stupid, an entire carrier, home to only five fighters. And if the Aether had a larger complement, where the hell was it in episode 6. Because if you believe it, there was a mere 15 fighters (assuming each platoon has 5 fighters) on the Aether. And if your purpose was to go support a planet from been taken over, the rapid reaction force seem to be absurdly small. A single carrier, with may be 15 fighters, of which only five went into the fight... that is a head scratcher unless the show is implicitly saying that the NUNS pilots and machines are so bad that a mere 5 VF-31 had the ability to take out on a good planetary defense force (backed with the Walkure of course). Then there are the Aerial Knights, don't get me started on them, so far, I still haven't seen exactly where the Aerial knights are launching from, seems like their home planet. Like I said in another thread, one of their superior physical characteristics must be the ability to hold their pee for a long time during space flight, get in a fight, and then come back. Those guys are like enemy hero units, something that none of the other series had before. it's different, but at the same time, it makes you wonder why anyone in the Macross universe even bother having a military any more.- 240 replies

In the original series, singing wasn't really relevant to conflict until much later in the series. Minmay started singing earlier on, but wasn't until the spies when they really started having an impact. (the first time was during the Miss Macross contest, and the singing was only part of the shock, the other was seeing man/woman mixed together and the swim suits) The contamination of culture happened later after the spies came back from the Macross, The actual weaponization of the song/culture didn't happen until nearly the end of the series when Bol Dolze came in. If I recall correctly, the idea came from the Zentradi to do that, not the humans. In Frontier, weaponization of song as a tactical advantage against Vajra happened fairly early on (by ep 13 or so if I recall). The same was true in 7. In Delta, we jump right into the song as a tactical advantage, in fact, it is the full background of the story. Each of these take a slightly different path, it's interesting to see how the Mac+ universe is evolving along this line.- 240 replies

I am still a bit ambivalent about Macross Delta right now. In a lot of ways, Macross Delta is more like Macross 7. With singing more integral to the story, literally, Var is counteracted by singing, and that's the focus, without Walkure, everything would be about firefighting. The setting is also different from the other series, all the other stories had everything revolved around a moving ship. The difference with the original series is that it was in a fixed location (Earth system), so it's kind of like Delta in that fashion, except Delta occurs in a small cluster of stars. 7 and Frontier weren't fixed in that way. The original series and frontier also focused on solo singers who happens to make a big difference almost as an aside. You could easily see both of those having no idols and still be very engaging series. The idols weren't the sole focus of the story, that they are essential to the story line is almost an after effect. (at least that's what I think) So, Frontier and the original series would be focused on single pop stars, like a Taylor Swift or a Taylor Dane. 7 and Delta are focused on a bands or group of singers. Dare I say it, New Kids on the Block or Van Halen... Each series is quite unique and have mixture of elements, some the same as other series, some quite different. The other thing that I noticed is that as the Macross series expands, the in universe structure seem less and less obvious. I know the governmental structure of the original series, still somewhat sure about what it was in 7 and Frontier, but Delta seems to really muddy things up. Each series are definitely different, and while some of the basic formulas, triangle, singing, VFs, and Macrosses remain the same, there are quite a bit difference in most of the other story elements. so far, Delta is pretty entertaining, not quite on par with Frontier, but definitely superior to 7 in my humble opinion.- 240 replies

So, here is a question, since there are grunt VF-31, something I'm truly happy about from an organizational structure point of view. How many of these grunts are there? Are they all CHAOS, or are there NUNS involved? NUNS seem to get the cannon fodder VF-17Is. The question is why. Of course, it is also interesting to see how NUNS are organized, because each branch of it seem to be separated or only loosely organized. With large number of mercs (usually with better equipment) supplementing them. This seems a little weird, kind of like the USAF is a bunch of grunts who has substandard equipment (think F-15s) and there is a merc organization (called it Blackwater Air Force) who supplements the USAF, and all they have are F-22s and F-23s. NUNS in the planetary level seem very loosely organized. For example, on a counter attack to Voldor, if it gets organized should involve a NUNS fleet. I know we're still early in the series, and may yet see this. But odd that their recon group, and even their reaction force wasn't NUNS but a bunch of mercs. -

From that view, it does look a lot like they are unrelated twins. One thing I wish they do a little better job of is showing the various classes of ships in the Macross universe; The Harlock/Deneb type looks like a modification from the original Denebs, the original Deneb didn't have the two protruding prowls that wide from what I remembered, but then of course, we had may be 30 seconds of looking at the Deneb class in all of Frontier. And I wonder if the Aerial Knights are ship based somewhere; because even with fold capability, it's an awfully long time to hold your pee while launching from Windermere, getting onto a mission in another system, and then come back home. Although I suppose one of their extreme physical abilities might be that they can fight for prolonged period without going to the bathroom. -

Anyone see the last episode? Just kidding. I think we got a fairly clear look at some of the Windermere ship; at 6:20 or so, there was an overhead shot of a Dulfim type ship? except the booms were unequal in length. We can see the rest of the orbital fleet composed of Uragas, Northamptons, Gitmo, and looks like the main flag ship in orbit is a Deneb class, we also do see one next to that Dulfim class on the planet after the opening credits, Any guesses on what they are capable of? An addendum I guess, is there any dimensions on the size of the carrier arm for the Aether, compared to the Quarter? WIth these carriers, it is always a bit deceptive to see what the actual sizes are; Because the sizes are strangely deceptive, if you look at the Aether, one could say that it is about the same size as the Quarter carrier. But hard to tell just by looking. -

Just rewatched, and noticed something odd. Is Bogue taller all of a sudden? I somehow always get the feeling that him, and the evil twin brothers were kind of short. But then I saw him next to Herman, and they were like the same height. Did they stretch Bogue out? I think I liked him better pip-squeak size (ala FMA); would be kind of funny to see a short antagonist get killed.- 240 replies

Cause he's Tony Stark, he can bend reality like Cap's shield can bend the laws of physics... love that one. This was a damn good movie, I think it pretty much made up for the crappy Age of Ultron, and pretty much in one move pulled Ant Man/Black Panther/Spidey into the MCU and integrated them nicely, all the while giving it a good emotional punch. (not like SvB, which basically had no real development) The ending was a really good payoff of the tension between Stark and Rogers ever since the Avengers. They're on screen for three movies together at this point, and they play off of each other well. Would not be too surprised if those were the last two standing against Thanos at the end of Infinity Wars.- 445 replies

I like the dynamics of Messer/Arad and the rest of the team, those are clearly the aces in the group, and they fulfill very useful roles right now as a way of firming up what are otherwise rookies. But I'm going out on a limb now and calling a pineapple salad for Messer. I don't necessarily think Keith will do him in. I don't see him surviving the series though. I figure Arad will survive, but not Messer, and if Hermann doesn't buy the farm before episode 20, then something is clearly gone wrong with this series. They have a little too many side characters right now. -

Oddly, I always though of Macross related movies as in-universe entertainment or propaganda. But that's never been confirmed one way or the other. BTW, I liked the TV version of Max x Milia, simply because the movie version was less developed, essentially "hey, we just tried to kill each other, let's have sex now." Yeah, the knife fight was a bit cheesy, but hey, so was the entire premise of an ace pilot hellbent on revenge that she went commando style into enemy territory. But no more so than Milia deciding not to roll over in DYRL and squishing the pathetic miclone that beat her in mecha combat.- 273 replies

Milia's ears were not nearly as pointed, and nearly as.... HORIZONTAL, that's it, that's what's so different about Mirage... HORIZONTAL EARS. MUTANT... yep, that's what she is, a mutant Going back to the culture thing, I do agree that Frontier was a little about technology going amok, but there were also aspects of perverting culture, when Sheryl and then Ranka was used by Grace. How else would you term the Minmay attack on NUNS in episode 24.- 273 replies

I always thought DRYL and Frontier movies weren't canon, but NUNS propaganda. I seem to recall that the DRYL is a movie released in universe for the launch of Megaroad I, and Frontier movies are just NUNS attempt to cover up things that went weird in the actual Frontier universe... As said before the Max/Milia courtship in fighter combat sounds much better than having one stalking the other only to realize the other wants to gut him with a knife.- 273 replies
