Anyone else looking forward to the HGUC Zaku ground battle set? I've never built an HGUC, and I don't really like the scale, but with all those cool extras like the tanks and the effect bits, it looks like a totally rad set!

In reality you're right... I think the biggest thing is that just like on say, a Panther kit with 'real' casting marks on some parts, we're so tuned as model builders to assume mold lines are meant to be removed... -

Interesting observation of the original dub... I'm making it my goal this term at school to finally watch all of SDF:Macross, of which I finally have all of the new dub DVDs, and the original MS Gundam, which I've never seen most of.- 3717 replies

Great looking Bane HWR, I like the mud and grime alot... it's much more conservative than my Mecharius. The only thing is you did just like everyone else who builds the plastic Bane and left the mold lines on the track sides -

See a big part of the reason Seed sucks is that we /already/ did the MS Gundam storyline... it was called MS Gundam I find Seed's characters much more annoying, especially Kira and Arthas... the mecha designs for Seed are all way too uber-super and ridiculous, and alot of them get way worse as the series progresses. The fact that Seed even has Zakus in it just shows how uninpsired Seed was... I haven't seen anything from 00, and don't like the Gundam designs at all, but I love the Tieren from 00, and think it's a fantastic and original bad-guy generic type.- 3717 replies

Star Wars Republic Commando squad

Good timing Dax, as I'm here for my nightly update... tomorrow I pack up for school, so there probably won't be any more updates until the weekend after I'm unpacked and resituated in Worcester. Scorch 1 and 2 have had their base colors laid down successfully... I really like how they look, and can see why he's an appealing character from the group. Both Scorches need the black armor drybrushed to bring out detail, and a little oil color on the yellow bits for the panel lines. Then I'll catch up the damaged one to the rest of his team, but be a little more deliberate in the chipping work, as the white chipping of the colors is going to stand out alot more than the dark grey bare-armor dings and chips. I also got the base black for the undersuits done... that was a painful process but now that it's out of the way, that represents the end of the large color applications... everything from here on out is highlighting and detail work, which should go nicely, and can be spaced out a bit to prevent burn out. I'll do some touch ups for the clean squad and get them basically done, and start on the weapons while I do the beaten up squad. -

Here's the three members of Delta Squad tonight... Cpl. Paint Travesty and his mathcing Scorch-to-be blank are as yet un-touched until I finish repairing Cpl. Travesty (I still can't believe I screwed it up.) Boss, Fixer, and Sev have had their armor colors completely applied... Sev was particularly fun, and I'm really pleased with how the blood-markings came out. I've come across a number of different pics of all the characters, from miniatures to other figure customs, game shots and cosplay costumes, so I'm taking the average of all of them, with some artistic license to boot (as the commissioner allowed). The last few pics show the clean squad and the beginning of the battle-worn squad as of tonight. The white on the battle worn squad looks funny right now, but alot of it will be covered in dark grey chipping like the sample figure... he looked this way for a while as well. Let me know how thye look! -

Is the new MSIgloo 2 anything like 08th MS Team? That was always my favorite for the line-soldier perspective of the war on Earth (at least for the first few eps.)- 3717 replies

I've been inside my brother's Blaster once before, and the mechanism is positively rotten... those flat springs bind up all the time and are really poorly designed. Someone's bound to have a good pic of the correct configuration here or on TFW tho if you ask around.

So here's where we stand tonight... worked on two guys, Boss and Fixer, and got their color laid down. The other two figures, Sev and Scorch, are a color and black, so I'm doing them together. Disregard the messy guy in the first pic, he had a little snafu situation... I had a one in four chance to accidentally use a Scorch body for someone else and managed it... thankfully it was Boss, who only has a few bits of color, so stripping the wrong parts wasn't too terrible... and Scorch has alot of black, so the only parts I need to re-make white are the face, torso, and shoulders. The colors on Fixer still look a bit rough, but after a drybrush and a little more work, I'll make the color nice and solid and lighten it up a tad. -

Well, the main things I picked up from IA:M was to space things out and try not to do too much at once... basically break down all the different things you want to show on your model into separate layers and go about them logically... and don;t be afraid to repeat and overlap things. I did some rust streaking and staining, and then the bulk of the dirtying and mud, and then more rust streaks and grease leaks, so that some of the rust and grease would stain into the dirt, making it look more recent. -
Thanks for the pics... I grabbed the real-type production Zaku... I plan on adding some paintwork, and maybe basic leg articulation so it can look at home terrorizing my 1/35th scale tanks. Can you snap some close ups by chance? I'm especially curious about the hands... are they just hinged, or really articulated like some product subscriptions suggest?

Sidearms, by the Urban Camo Ruination release, there were reports of ill-fitting parts and floppy combination. As for JPexclusive combiners, you've got all the Micromaster combiners, Landcross, RoadCeaser, Dinoking (Monstructor repaint with new Pretender Shells), and Liokaiser.

I use water for my spray gun and all of my acrylics... I've had a little problem with clogging, but not to terrible. -
I just placed the order for a Jumbo Grade Zaku, anyone else got any of these big figures?

I do hope they cleaned up the molds since they burnt them out on all the Ruination repops, as I really want a Bruticus!
-
I build model kits for all of the reasons you listed... some I just like to build, while others I build to get the experience of making and then having a representation of something that meets whatever my standards are.

I just finished this big guy... it was my Xmas bonus I was really inspired by IA:Masterclass, and tried out a few things I picked up from that tome, including more oil work, and more layering. I'm really happy with the results, and think it's my best armor model so far, and am interested to see what people think... this is around the standard I want my SM tanks to look at the end if the day, and I've gota a detailed Rhino awaiting exterior paint, so we'll see how these ideas hold up. I converted the commander to have one hand on the stubber and the other pointing, as I've got a DK flamer team to go with this model, and I may end up doing a diorama base for the two models. I also got some good use out of my GW spray gun early on... the base color green is custom mixed, and was sprayed to save alot of time and preserve the surface detail. What might surprise some is that the camo color was sprayed on as well... obviously you can't do very fine squiggly camos with the SG, but for a nice broad banded camo, it worked to great effect. From there I some detail work and started the weathering, including acrylic work for shipping, oils for surface discoloration, dirt, grime, rust, oil, and fuel staining, and pigments and acrylics for the mud and dirt and the tracks. I'm happy to answer any specific questions about my work. The pics cam be seen much larger in my Dakka gallery. -
Yes! My favorite... thankfully I only actually own two RX-78-2s... the PG, which I'm converting to something else, and the initial HCMPro release, which is awesome. Is the new Robot Soul line still awful PVC like MSIA, or something better? The pics make it look like a more resillient material closer to ABS, but it's hard to tell. I'll buy that GP-01FB if it's not PVC and has as good of articulation as the 00 machine you linked.

What is this Robot Spirit line? I like the look of that GP-01FB
