  1. More PS3/Blu-Ray info from Gamespot. I believe the Blu-Ray support includes not only DVD movies, but the discs that the games themselves will be manfactured on. Given the huge storage space on Blu-Ray DVDs, I wonder if this alone won't keep developers in the Sony camp: 27GB is a lot of space to fill with content like super-high-resolution textures (and after Doom 3's computer screens, they won't have any excuses), high-quality music... maybe I'm just gushing, but it seems that the gaming experience is about to take a huge leap forward.
  2. Providence is named as such because, when viewed from the front, its backpack is supposed to simulate an angelic halo. Of course, angels aren't fat... or ugly... or designed by Okawara...
  3. I'm running the Catalyst 4.7 drivers on a Radeon 9800 Pro, 128 MB version. They work FINE for me. From what I've heard, the 4.9 betas only give a small performance boost, and even then the boost is only worth it on the X800 series. If you want to try them, you can, but I prefer stable, final drivers, especially since I'm getting in the range of 30-45 FPS with 1024x768 set at high quality. People complaining about the $55 price tag... one, Circuit City is selling it for $45: two, since Doom 3 is selling so well at a slightly higher price point, expect other high-profile games to vend for this much in the future: three, get a job.
  4. Blu-Ray isn't a Sony standard. Sony is part of the Blu-Ray group, and did not develop the standard in-house. I forget which company developed it, but I'm 99% sure it wasn't Sony. HD-DVD, Blu-Ray's competitor for the next-generation of DVDs, is backed only by Toshiba and NEC. Meanwhile, there are 13 companies who back Blu-Ray: Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Hitachi, LG Electronics, Matsushita Electric Industrial, Mitsubishi Electric, Pioneer, Royal Philips Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sharp, Sony, TDK and Thomson Multimedia. So much for blaming Sony, eh? People looking for BASIC info on Blu-Ray (storage capacity and format) should click here and scroll down.
  5. Blu-Ray, as I understand it, is still capable of viewing older DVDs. If not, I can't see Sony ensuring that current DVDs will work on the PS3. Perhaps they'll include a standard DVD laser.
  6. Latest video card drivers and DirectX9b are required. DirectX9c came out a day or two before Doom 3's release, so grab that for the heck of it. Overclocking is also not recommended. I've seen reports of people who've overclocked getting a bunch of game errors. If you're overclocking, stop it. If you're using multiple displays, disable all but the primary display, and make sure the video card recognizes the remaining display as display 1.
  7. After the GP01, Kawamori had better stick to Macross. Give Katoki head billing, give he whom I affectionately call "the Wind Fall guy" everything else. Instant success.
  8. "Everyone does it" is not a valid argument. And like Stamen said, I don't buy Yamato products. Toys, much like Trix, are for kids. Looking forward to obtaining and properly running Doom 3. Go go 2.8GHz P4.
  9. To know whether or not you could run the game, you merely need to look at the minimum specs. Piracy = bad.

  12. Most are. There are some Master Grades, however, which use ABS exclusively for the internal frame areas for extra strength and stability. The Mater Grade G Gundam kits' action frame used ABS, as does the GM Type C and Gundam ver. Ka. The external pieces are standard styrene, however.
  13. Armored Core... well, I played the demo of the very first one on PSone... seemed alright, but the game had serious camera issues. I picked up AC2:AA for PS2, and I have yet to play it. I hope they fixed the camera. As for FM4... the voice acting is a bit ridiculous. They went overboard on the national accents. Just play the training mission at the beginning, "Welcome to the Durandal." This does not bode well for the game's story. As far as FM going up against AC goes, well, if Square made Front Mission Assault 2 (or whatever the FM action game on SFC was named), they'd have a contender. As it stands, strategy games do not compete with action games, and vice-versa. I'd like to see a new Virtual On myself... one that doesn't suck.
  14. Screenshots look interesting, but the people look too cartoonish, especially the fat redheaded guy. I'm just hoping that acronyms don't become the standard for FPS names. First S.T.A.L.K.E.R., now F.E.A.R. Enough already.

  18. Well, Doom was originally "experiment gone wrong." In that context, Half-life is just a ripoff and elaboration of the original Doom's plot. I'm sure the UAC installation won't be the only locale in the game.
  19. It just means you have to become a bit more critical about the models, and a bit more picky about which you buy. It certainly can't hurt the wallet, at least. And it makes the models you currently have stand out more. Maybe it's just me, but I take more interest in a well-done set of three models than I do in a well-done set of twelve. Maybe it's the overkill factor.

  21. Well, he's just looking for any application of blue; he wants to see how real-world militaries handle the color, as opposed to how Macross 7 handles the color.
  22. Doom 3 works like Halo and Half-life in that it's an objective-based game. You aren't just walking throughout the base killing everything that moves; there's a reason for it, and a story behind it. Just don't expect a deep, moving plot. It'll be something that gets the job done, but the Doom experience has never relied on story: it's relied on atmosphere and terror. Doom 3 won't be a disappointment if it doesn't have a story; it'll be a disappointment if it's not frightening. Some of those sound effects from the very first Doom still freak me out--like the Cyberdemon's scream when it sees you for the first time.
  23. Post-Macross designs can probably be chalked up to the need to match the size of Zentraedi machines, or something similar. Maybe they needed to get bigger for performance reasons. The M0 designs are bigger than the VF-1 because they use the same type of engine systems as normal fighter jets, so they have to be bigger--of course, in context, these planes are no larger than the jets in use by air forces around the world. Besides, big is good. More detail. More space taken up.
  24. Obviously, I'm not zeo-mare, but.. the entire thing needs painting. Plastic sheen = bad.
  25. No sense in hoping. It won't happen. Bandai hates Katoki styling in general, and definitely isn't going to use a Studio Reckless original design in their MG line. That month's release could be better spent hocking some ugly Zeta series design.
