Doubt they would release DYRL as a Robotech movie (letting aside all the companies who want an exclusive piece of the action), for a number of reasons: 1) They already have a "Robotech the Movie" and that barely qualified as a Phyrric victory by staying open a week in Dallas. They need another RT:TMP like a hole in the head. 2) there's no way they could shoehorn it into the Robotech continuity. The story is different enough to where they can't really work in the Robotech Masters (unless they credit them with the building of the underwater city--and that, IMHO would make no bloody sense with regards to the RT continuity) and there's NO room for the Invid. 3) sad as it is to say, HG did realize that Macross is their main property. Mospeada is second, and who's heard of Southern Cross? They also have finally acknowledged that there are fans of the original, non-RT series who want to be able to enjoy the show without all of that Rick Hunter/Lisa Hayes, Invid/Robotech Masters/Protoculture Flowers spucatum taurii. I agree that probably, they're moving to a two franchise under one roof setup, where SDF Macross /DYRL (if they can get it) will be seen as a seperate and equal franchise alongside its Robotech offshoot, but both controlled by the same company. I was thinking of putting in an analogy with William the Conqurer, Normandy and England, but I won't.

While I agree with the sentiment, Uxi, I'm wondering if there's been too much bad blood spilled over the course of the past few decades for them to play nice. Rather than the harbinger of some modicum of peace, I wouldn't be a bit surprised to see another round of legal fighting going on. It's not over, not by a long shot. If nothing else, though, this will have to get BW and Tat to stop pussy-footing around the issue of the foreign rights.

To add to Apollo Leader's explanation: RW had said that for any anime company to even consider licensing DYRL would mean paying licensing fees to a large number of putative license holders (including, but not limited to HG and BW). Further, most of these companies want to be the only one drawing fees and have said that they would derail any release if the others were paid as well.

I think you hit it on the head, O Master Sniper. I'll bet that, after Robert Woodhead's jawdropping announcement a few months back (which was, IYEAPN, the catalyst to my going R2 to get DYRL) HG's lawyers went all out to try to discern if they could get the license themselves. If we're lucky these hideous Super Posables are just HG's attempt at a Sunwards in reverse.

In that case, KingNor, I'd go with the original Japanese. I've heard both, and the Japanese soundtrack (other than a few pops and hisses from film damage) sounds a lot crisper and cleaner than the English dub, which to me sounded muddy. Also, the Japanese track probably has a better chance of being remastered the next time they decide to do a super-duper anniversary edition (it is 2004, after all).

One of the problems I have with the English dub, though, is it puts a BIG plot hole into the story. During the scene where Hikaru and Misa are exploring the Prometheus, in place of Minmay singing "Cinderella," for some inexplicable reason they had her humming "DYRL." Problem: She doesn't learn of the song's existance for a few scenes afterward, when Britai and Exedor (who only get the music chip in the next scene themselves) give her the tune.

The leading theory/rumor (was it confirmed that Kawamori said this?) is that due to the unpopularity of nuclear weapons in Japan he feared that using it in the series would be a bad thing and thus came up with the more creative name, "reactive weaponry." I'd always heard that there was an unspoken rule on Japanese TV at the time that heroes weren't allowed to use nuclear weapons.

I just rewatched that episode last weekend! The funny part is her name is spelt "Minmei" on her door, but literally 30 seconds later on the letter from "OLION RECORDS" that Hikaru reads they spell her name "Lynn Minmay"!! It's clearly visible if you freeze frame it. If you read that letter, you can see that the person responsible for composing the English for that letter has a very good grasp of English. I was quite impressed! Oh, BTW, Macross is like the Best Show Ever! Randy Actually, with few exceptions, large blocks of English in the series and movie are accomplished extremely well. Take a look, for instance, at the English(!) lyrics that Misa gives Minmay in DYRL. I've always been of the opinion that English is the official language of the Macross universe (since much of the written material that the characters interact with is in English such as Minmay's letter), but that they speak in Japanese for the convinience of the audience (like in "To Be or Not to Be" '83: "Ladies and gentlemen: In the interests of clarity and sanity, the rest of this film will not be in Polish...").

Very technically, if you look at the katakana used to speel the name, it is "Minmei." However, other than that one sign early on, every other reference is "Minmay," and that seems to be the official romanization. Actually, this name confusion is one of the few things that can't be laid at HG's feet.

However, it's looking like we could get the Democrats and Republicans and dogs and cats to embrace each other before all of the companies that own a piece of DYRL here in the states would agree to let one of them release a DVD version. When Robert "We even deny that Japan exists" Woodhead of AnimEigo says a versionof the above, you might as well settle in for a long wait... damn --ing lawyers...

Actually, all dub versions spring from a Toho-commissioned dub that was done either for JAL flights or for the hint of foreign release (as was done later with COTB and other VHS versions int he states). Toho had nothing to do with the edits for COTB, which were done by Celebrity for Kids to make a film that would otherwise be PG-13 into a G film for the rugrats.

Nah, American movie companies don't suck per se, it's those inside the movie companies who think that American audiences won't go to a movie if the names are hard to pronounce. Further, they have a stereotype in mind that the normal (read: non-anime-fan) audiences want to see people like them on the screen. And, sadly, the major movie audience is young, white, teen males. Why else do "Spirited Away," "Tokyo Godfathers" and "Cowboy Bebop" languish in art houses while the latest Bruckheimer-Bey explodathon (and don't get me wrong, I like action movies) gets all the screentime in all the other popcorn palaces? And look on the bright side: The producer of "Schindler's List" (of all people) bought the rights to do a live-action "Lupin III" and Monkey Punch put in a clause in the contract forbidding them to change the names. So, while there might not be a live-action Asuka Langely (if the live action Eva ever gets out of pre-production purgatory), there will be a live-action Daisuke Jigen, Ishikawa Goemon XIII and Fujiko Mine.

Just for my $.02: If you're looking for a good, cheap, region-free DVD player, look for any Region 1 CyberHome DVD-300. I've got one (got it so that I could get a R2 copy of DYRL myself--Although it's expensive, the R2 version is the only way to go ), and it is extremely simple to change to all regions without a mod chip. And it's only about $40.

In that case, why, in WW2, should they have painted kill marks on aces' aircraft? Because psychologically, it says to both sides: This guy's badass. Besides, at hundreds of MPH, are you really going to have time to see every difference and note the number?
