Except for me, thinning wasn't an issue. I used the paint straight from the bottle, as I brush-paint everything. You shouldn't do that. For any kind of painting, you should transfer the paint to another container and thin it before applying it. Otherwise, your brush will deposit debris into the paint bottle which will appear in your paintjob later on. Also thinning helps you to get a smooth paintjob - if you apply the paint unthinned, it can partially dry out while you're applying it or immediately afterward, resulting in your brushstrokes being too-visible. It's hard for me to say exactly what's going on with your model. Did you stir your paint thoroughly before applying it? That's my best guess at this point, if this is a flat paint it may have separated out, in which case the flat base may be appearing in too-high quantities. That might be the problem, come to think of it...It was a relatively new pot (bought it maybe a week ago) and so with new paints I have a habit of shaking them for about thirty seconds rather than stirring. Older paints I do stir because the (I don't remember the actual terms so bear with a blood metaphor) plasma and serum seperate over time. How much should I end up thinning the paint by, and with what? As for an airbrush, that's a good idea. but I'm going to have to hold off on it for a while, only because I really don't have the room or the money to buy one right now.

Well, I've got an annoying problem going on with a A6M2-N Rufe floatplane. I'd built it completely with no real problems, and began to paint the uppers in XF-11 Imperial Japanese Navy Green (a color meant to look like the dark-green uppers that Nakajima put on their Zeroes) The first coat went on like a charm, but left a few gaps, so I decided to put on a second coat after lettign the paint cure overnight. The second coat (I stopped after doing half the fuselage) looked very poor. It left streaks that looked like dingy water across the plane, and the coat itself looked chalky. This happened also on a Devastator that I was building. Anyone have a similar experience? If i slather on a third coat, will I be OK, or should I just break out the Dawn Power Dissolve and strip the kit?

Personally, I find the whole thing to be useless. "Oriental," from a historical standpoint, didn't just mean Asia, it meant also Middle Eastern/North African, and Greece as well. Alexander the Great (the Macedonian warlord) was considered an "Oriental" potentate, as were Cleopatra of Egypt and the Byzantine Emperors. Further, the Crusader Kings of Jerusalem (circa 1100-1200) were considered "Oriental," even thought they were actually descended from Frankish adventurers who had heeded Urban II's call. "Asian" has a similar problem. Technically, Europe, Asia and Africa are all the same continent (merely divided into three at the Urals and Suez Canal for historical/ethnographic convinience). Are Russians "European" or "Asian," for instance, as certainly Russia straddles the division between Europe and Asia. What about the Turkish? Or Egyptians? Me? I just toss this "Asian/Oriental" business and call people by nationalities. Japanese are Japanese, English are English, Russians are Russians, Tahitians are Tahitians, Pottsylvanians are Pottsylvanians (All hail Fearless Leader!). Other people, on the other hand, describe me with the catch-all nationality of "what the hell is that???"

Would you buy HG versions of DYRL and Macross 7?
Pat Payne replied to Myriad's topic in Movies and TV Series
Not meaning to sound like an ass (again) but that poll you will find will be very, very lopsided. I only know one person who has legit R2 items of Macross... everyone else has bootlegs or the handfull of R1 that has been released. Make that two--I bought a legit R2 version of Macross DYRL (special-ordered it from the Asahiya Bookstroe in Torrance), although I probably will buy a legit version (even a HG/ADV joint release) when it comes out on general principles. -
I think this clearly shows a lack of Big West involvement, as both Macross 2 and Macross Plus have Big West marking on the packing, along with Manga's. The interesting, and somewhat ominous thing is that there's also no mention of Tatsunoko in the copyright notice...

According to Scott Bakula himself, there was no dual ending shot for the episode in case they were cancelled. OTOH, I wouldn't be surprised if that "alien nazi" ending (while the only actual ending shot) was intended to be used if the show weren't cancelled, leaving Archer dead (witn some slight re-editing of the last 20 minutes of the episode if UPN had given it the axe.

Would you buy HG versions of DYRL and Macross 7?
Pat Payne replied to Myriad's topic in Movies and TV Series
Ummmm...when did Mac 7 enter into all of this? I know HG's been making "Today SDF Macross, Tomorrow the entire Macross Franchise!" noises again, but I doubt they'd ever get their mitts on Macross 7. -

Bandai has full rights to the HCM toys that Toynami made into the MPCs, but you don't see Bandai's name anywhere on the MPCs, do you? HG has not been known as a stickler for giving credit where credit is due. -
How many macross series are really out there?
Pat Payne replied to GCMOSPEADA's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Ummm...isn't this a newbie thread question? Or even a "Movies and TV Series" question? -
I really doubt it. If you can cross dimensions and build devices that work like miniature (but full-power) Death Stars almost at whim, why exactlly would you need to turn yourselves into cyborgs with a hive mind? Besides, the borg already exist in this part of the Trek timeline.

And how has that stopped them before, Ogami? Eweilen: I dunno...there are a few who I think would be perfect (i.e. Michael Dorn as Britai, Bruce Campbell as Roy Focker [don't laugh, I'm serious!]) One other thought...Brace yourselves for more bad Tommy Yune cover art, as you know they ain't gonna use any of the actual Mikimoto production art! Also, AnimeonDVD brings up a good point on their site...this could also just be a gonzo marketing ploy for the superposeables, ADV's promises of a pants-crappingingly astounding license (there's a phrase I never thought I'd have occasion to use) notwithstanding. -

I'd like to think so too, but the reason that Macross, Southern Cross and Mospeada didn't get dubbed was that HG specifically said not to -- that they considered RT to be the official English dub of the three shows and they didn;t want competing dubs. DYRL, which was never (and Hoary Froating Head willing, never will be) part of the RT continuity doesn't have that baggage attached. If they do a dub, I kninda think: Best: Dub with "name" stars and Macross names 2nd best: dub with good dub cast (Cowboy Bebop cast, for instance) and good dub direction with Macross names 3rd best: ditto, with RT names worst: fly-by-night cast (or original RT cast) with RT names. -

Good point...I'd had the same thoughts myself...which means most likely no AnimEigo remaster of whatever they get... Shin Kurokawa, why hast thou forsaken us? Now, will ADV (if DYRL was what they menat by "bowel loosening") at least do us the favor of alternate angles for the title logo (like they did on some of their Dirty Pair and City Hunter titles--Original logo for sub and new logo for release)? If I have to look at another cheap ADV English-language overlay, there will be limbs removed, wailing and gnashing of teeth, crushing of flowers, incursions into Trebizond, the sacking of towns...wait a minute, that's my "to-do" list for tomorrow...I'm sorry -
"Night Shift Nurses." ADV was told by its lawyers that some of the acts depicted in that title (dealing with execretory functions) were legally defined as obscene in three communities in the US and that ADV could be prosecuted on obscenity charges even if the DVDs merely passed through them en route to someplace else. And yes, Panon, they do usually get around the minor thing by changing the ages in the dialogue. They CAN'T do that with those scenes in Kite, because whereas Miko Mido could plausibly be 19 for the purposes of a US release, young Sawa is very recognizably in her young teens. That's the difference.
-
That's why (and I know a lot of you are gonna disagree with me) I think it's better that, for the sake of anime's reputation in the US, this one DOESN'T get released uncut. Fandom's only just recently succeeded in living down the early glut of "tentacle hentai" titles that appeared in the early '90s leading certain pundits and religious figures to condemn all anime as that. In this country, the activities in those cut scenes are so repellent (and that includes me -- I have zero interest in seeing that sort of crap, and I'm no prude) that the mere mention that someone's depicting them, even in a form that does not put a real minor at risk, will set off a firestorm of anger, one that could possibly be loosed at anime in general. Think if certain talk show hosts (like Bill O'Reilly) hear about this. We'll never hear the end of it -- and we've already seen that they command a large and vocal audience who can boycott and perhaps force some retailers to drop anime. And please, just because Federal law says it's OK, don't think that means that every locality will. Remember that a certain ADV title had to be edited because what was shown was declared obscene in three cities out of the entire nation. And if they find it even being mailed through their city (stopping momentarily in a post office en route to its final destination) they can arrest the seller and buyer -- even if neither reside in that locality -- and try them in the city's own court.

The real Dana Sterling....

Gold star for you Both C-Ko and Jeanne were voiced by Michie Tomizawa, who also did the voice for Linna Yamazaki in the original BGC OAVs. -

never heard of kid actors? Of course I have, and the remark about her being 8 was not meant as a way of saying "it couldn't be the same person" but a confirmation that, yes, she could have acted in that movie. -

It's in the realm of possibility, I'd definetly say that. The IDMB site that has the "daughter of Paul Newman" lists her birth year as 1961, and the first role on the other entry is for the John Wayne/Rock Hudson vehicle "The Undefeated" in 1969 (which, if they are the same person, would have made her about 8 years old at the time). -
SW Episode III: Birth of the Empire
Pat Payne replied to GreatMoose's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
That wasn't the REAL reason, IIRC: Actually, they had used the "Revenge" name early on as a "leak/copyright trap" for those who might try to steal and sell preproduction goodies or make bootlegs thereof. Some movie writers do this on scripts for highly-anticipated movies -- small pieces of dialogue [an address or planet name] will be subtly changed between different actors' copies, so that if one somehow gets sold, they can find the culprit. -

Of course Lockyer would say that...he's gunning for Ahnold's job! -
I'll bet what happened with Southern Cross is that the show was probably supposed to run longer, but got cut down (like Macross was) and they had to throw together an ending. I always thought that the ending of SC made no sense, and seemed way too forced.

I used to do a sinilar thing...except I used to unscrew the Joe figure from the back, keep the o-ring intact, and play "musical limbs" with the characters...actually turned a 1991 Wild Bill and a original HAVOK driver (the southern guy--don't remember his name) into a U.S. Cavalry officer... I also did a repaint on a 3" Exo-Squad Tomahawk. I decided I wanted a Kurita "Sword of Light" Warhammer and so, out came the red paint and a spare Kurita sticker from my BT game...

I really wish I had the time to go to E3 this year...I passed by Staples Center on my way to an interview today...looked cool from the outside.
