well, there's also an in story reason. I think the general idea is that DYRL is also an in continuity movie depicting Space War 1. At the end of the actual events depicted in the original series, the SDF-1 was heavily damaged and underwent a rebuild/refit to the current DYRL type. This refitted Macross (or maybe one of the newly built sister ships of the same class) was then used in the "filming" of DYRL. This is also the in continuity reason for the upgrades on the VF-1 as well, as the ones used were from a later revision of the design.

What's funny is that Spielberg is ripping off himself here. All that stuff about them fighting the aliens just looks like hack, made for TV version of act three of War of the Worlds. When you're mining your own closet of B movies to recycle for your C stuff, maybe it's time to consider calling it a day..

hah, says the guy who changed his name and avatar! Yeah, I try to sit in the middle of the theater, at eye level with the middle of the screen. I'm sure there's lots of little stuff that affect the 3D performance and comfort from person to person.

I'm near sighted with astigmatism as well, I've never had a problem with 3D movies. But yeah, 3D at home needs to be figured out because the current system of competing, proprietary, incompatible systems is unbelievably stupid.

Yeah, I know it eventually got retconned into being something other than just a huge pointy helmet. I'm just talking about SDF:M and watching it waaaaay back in the day before any of that and thinking: no wonder they get shot down so much, they can hardly see anything that's not directly in front of them...

The giant pointy helmet that restricts the pilot's field of vision always bugged me far more. It like when it came to the pilots gear UN SPACEY just contracted the work out to Oakley.

Agreed. I love watching Pirates 3 if only for Bill Nighy. He so completely sells that he's some sort of half man, half seafood buffet monstrosity that all the makeup and CG are nearly superfluous. -
