The Max 1a had the new nose cone, the easier to open front landing bay doors, the improved hinges and they fixed the crooked skulls... all other variants hence and reissues kept these improvements.

!!! my 1/48 CF w/ FP just rolled off the top of my cabinet onto my desk... the pylon attachments popped off as well as the gun and nose cone but otherwise unharmed.... just about had a heart attack...

I agree... while I love this toy and all the small improvements I definitely prefer the 1/48 and how tight the fit is when it transforms into fighter mode.
