true. Well, for me, the fact that the creators of macross ignore mac II is reason enough to not consider it part of the main universe. You're more then welcome to think otherwise.

it's funny the things that people want to pick out on this movie. For me, the super sized elephants were much more believable than the odd goat man and especially the executioner with the blades grafted into his elbows... in a day and a age without antibiotics, how do they keep him alive? and it must hurt like a mother every time he uses those things... I gotta imagine those stumps are all inflamed and infected from having those big old blades stuck in there.

wow. looks great in all modes... but like others here, I'm pretty concerned about the strength and durability of some of those hinges. for me, the SV-51 toy will live or die based on how stiff and resilient those hinges turn out to be. I'm really hoping that the SV-51 doesn't turn out like the VF-0s.

the macross wasn't that far off the ground, and she settles back into her lake when the power goes out.

yup, a single VF smashing the central computer hardly qualifies as "pretty much destroyed"

actually the star wars analogy fits macross perfectly. Macross II was an official macross production and yes, it's not considered canon. the same way, the myriad SW books are official SW productions and they're not considered to be canon.

there were enough scenes of the phalanx in action for the viewer to "get it" the initial surge and the calvary charge. an impenterable wall of shield and spears is cool and all, but this is a movie. generally, audiences like to see their heroes. point at one shield among 300 and saying, ooh, that one is Leonidas! makes for boring. And there were plenty of scenes showing the strict discipline of spartan life.. the whole opening sequence was about showing the rigours of spartan life. I don't think we really needed to see them doing push ups to get that spartans were badass and disciplined, besides, the whole spartan versus arkadian thing really spelled it out again, if anyone wasn't paying attention. and yes, there were mutants, and giant elephants and what not, but again, this movie never pretended to be some sort of historical docudrama. They were meant to be entertaining. They were meant to emphasize power and twistedness of the persians. And yes, it's doubtful that xerxes spoke with a spanish accent. But again, this wasn't, national geographic presents: 300.

you're missing the fact that this is an adaptation of Frank Millar's graphic novel... those characters are drawn that way in the comic. And the comic wasn't a history lesson. I get that you're a big history buff and that you know your stuff. I'm not knocking that, and maybe this movie wasn't your cup of tea... but this movie was never even trying to appeal to the hardcore history buffs. There are plenty of film-makers out there who do that sort of thing. As far as the CG thing. It seems pretty obvious that there is a certain look that they're going for... in the same vein as Sin City and Sky Captain.. they're not trying for photorealism but something that's obviously supposed to be stylized after Frank millar's art work.

good point. actually, now that I think about it, the star wars comics and books are like this. they're supposed to take place in the same universe and have introduced all sorts of things... things that lucas uses or disregards at whim in his movies. So what is canon and what is not? the books that preceeded the prequels but are contradicted in the movies? Or the movies, that the creator of the universe makes? Granted, Kawamori wasn't the singular creator of macross in the way lucas is with star wars... but he is the defacto figurehead for the series.

so... if I were to produce a star wars movie, without the approval of lucas, you would accept it as canon? is that what you're saying? let's say I place the movie between ep 3 and 4... and let's say I include scenes that completely contradict events in ep 4. you would still accept this right?

people who go to see this movie expecting a history lesson are just missing the point. It's supposed to a good old fashion blood and guts popcorn movie... not a PBS documentary.

Macross 25th Anniversary! New TV series coming!
eugimon replied to wolfx's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
meh, gundam has always embraced the notion of AUs. macross has not and it seems pretty obvious that the creators are interested in further exploring the mythos and history. it would be a shame for them to throw all that out the window to do a reboot. -
meh, it's far too early start crying about the end of the world, imo.

I'd also prefer something new. I'd like to see UN SPACY versus renegade colony type stuff. -
I think the post was in reference to the scene in DYRL where max has his gunpod mounted in the opposite direction and he shoots the zentran pilot as he pulls him out of the pod.

yeah, I'm with you on this. He'll probably stay dead for a while. but then there will be some huge crisis and then we'll see a shot of some figure all in the shadows watching the news and say something dumb like, "Maybe America still needs a hero..." and then we'll see him stand up and OH MY GOD CAPTAIN AMERICA IS STILL ALIVE!!!

would have to be via genetic engineering then, since max, hikaru and other pilots of that generation are basically "this generation"

This makes sense if G-force is somehow nullified in valks... even if the valk is physically capable of out performing a missile, the pilot certainly would not. my personal theory on why long range missiles aren't used in macross is that the detection range on OT radar is so great, that long range missiles just get picked off with AA fire before they even reach the targets... seeing how beam weapons are virtually instantaneous given the distances we're dealing with.

meh, restarts are all the rage now thanks to batman begins, there's talk of restarting spiderman and x-men as well if you can believe it. Anyways, I don't think the problem with trek was how TOS was presented, it was fine for the time.. the problem with trek is the crap they've been putting out with voyager and onward.

yeah, it's a little wonky but hardly a deal breaker for me. parts breaking off, now thats a deal breaker.
-
maybe they can't. maybe their license specifies they can only produce 'x' number of units
-
cool, thanks for the clips... that F-22 sequence was amazing... that plane acted like a leaf on the wind.

hmm, that's an interesting theory. I wonder if yamato should just fudge the intake designs and give it more of a scoop to better create the illusion of depth... since they can't push it back any further, why not add material in front?

I think just raising the fan so it's not sitting on the bottom would help
