it helps indirectly by keeping the competition going, which hopefully translates into players coming out at lower price points then would have happened if there had been only one format. It kind of sucks in the short term though.

well, that's the rub with racism and persecution right? It's a very subjective and emotional thing... how can you say to someone who isn't black, or what have you, that what they're experiencing is not racism just because their skin color doesn't match a particular shade? In any event, I think context is key... I don't think capcom game designers have any incentive to continue american style european versus african racism... I would imagine, rather, they are resonding to the current situations in areas like dafur and not so long ago, sierra leone. anyways, I've been in way too many OT debates recently, so I'll say no more on this. But there are quite a few good blogs out there that deal with this subject matter.

yeah, this is true. Seeing how the sudden surge of Blu Ray discs only happened this year thanks to the PS3. My point, which I obviously didn't express very clearly, is that many consumers will see such a blatant move as a sign of weakness, that the HD folk can't rely on their technical strengths or their library and using cash to direct the market place. and if MS is behind this move, their money would have been better spent putting HDD in all new elite and premium boxes. Sony has pretty much proven that for the average consumer HD players alone are not worth the money, but that an HD player + gaming console is considered a good deal.

so it looks like the paramount/dreamworks bit is only for 18 months, at the tune of 150 million dollars. Nothing says desperate like a payoff.

The compendium is a great resource, but going there is like going to the reference library at university... M3 is like the military channel. Sure you may not learn as much, but it's entertaining and full of great visuals. And honestly, I'm not missing that last 10% than i get at the comendium... if I need it, I know where to look.
