while they might be reviled here, a lot of people buy their toys. As long as people buy their stuff, toynami has no incentive to raise their game. <shrug>

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 - <<Season 1>>
eugimon replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
really? I've been pretty underwhelmed. It started off interesting, but the slow pacing and the lack of likable characters has me quickly losing interest. Pacing isn't as bad as say... sky girls, though. -
good to hear! I'm glad you posted this before I finished updating my "ignore" list.
-
you... you don't like the q-rau???
-
I can't believe you guys. LOL. the yf-21 has a great fighter mode and the battroid mode pays an incredible homage to the q-rau as well as giving a wink to the vf-1.

nice! I have some of the source material of the line art on your site, but I love having everything there just a mouse click away.

Macross Zero, what exactly is the Tori no hito
eugimon replied to Isamu test pilot's topic in Movies and TV Series
Yeah, it's pretty clear birdman needed a pilot, it just seemed like it also had it's own intentions and directives. I wonder if sara was supposed to be under thrall, or if her mental state was due to a psychotic break from seeing her island blown up, her bf shot, people dying around her and being a little high strung to begin with. I dunno, maybe there's a nuance missing in the fansubs, but it seemed to me the birdman was pretty clear on blowing humanity back to the stoneage when Sara confirmed that humans were still fighting each other. This is why I said it "sided" with Sara. Because, other than Shin letting go of his demons, everything else around Birdman was still violent and Birdman had no reason not to complete its programing. But what you said does make sense... the human pilot acts as the final failsafe and is able to override the Birdman's programing. -

hmm, okay, that makes sense... though, I think it's still a little vague because it seems like birdman has its own personality. Though, I guess that could just be clever programming. -
Macross Zero, what exactly is the Tori no hito
eugimon replied to Isamu test pilot's topic in Movies and TV Series
well, from the show, it looks like it saw some hope when shin was able to let go of his violent emotions and reach sara. And because of that hope, decided it would side with sara and save humanity instead of blowing us all up. <shrug> It's more like humanity is fixing PC's mistakes. We're bring peace to the zentradi and we took care of their protodevlin problem. Not bad for a species with barely over a half century of intergalactic dealings under our belt. -

there's some debate here over what it is. from my watching... it's an organic/machine hybrid fail safe, left by the protoculture to watch and see how humanity turns out. If we reach the stars while still being violent and war mongering, it wipes us out. -
there could be a simple reason for this. It could be argued, that if yamato did grace this site with news and information on their macross toys, that they are ADVERTISING their products in the USA market... which would put them in legal trouble as they don't have the rights to do so.

I think that was in the proposal to make the military less threatening and more family friendly.

hmm, going by these shots (scans from m3, but hosted on photobucket, hope you don't mind Mr. March): it doesn't look to me like there are any mechanisms for the gunpods to be stored internally.
-
I haven't seen any lineart with the guns actually inside the yf-21, do you remember where you saw it? The pics i've seen, at best, would have the gunpods slightly recessed, but I think the 21 just sticks the gunpods to the belly plates when without FAST pack.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 - <<Season 1>>
eugimon replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I gotta say, 10 episodes in, I don't find any of the characters likable... there's just so much angst and disfunction I can handle. -
Actually, I think I see the attachment point. If you look at the gerwalk picks, you'll see a rectangular slot on the belly plate. On the guns, there looks to a fold-away rectangular peg. You can see a similar slot in the recessed gun slot on the FAST pack in the final Battroid pic (the one on the stand). There also seems to be two small pegs on the belly plates that correspond to slots on the gunpods. So no magnets, just a series of pegs. And since they're there on both belly plates and on the FAST pack plates, there should be no reason why the gunpods wouldn't stow in fighter mode.

About Millia 639 (Miria) in Macross 7
eugimon replied to Isamu test pilot's topic in Movies and TV Series
It's the "broca's area" that is different in polyglots from people who only speak one language. It's not that polyglots have it, but that it is structured differently. There's also the Geschwind-Galaburda cluster which may also be linked to other other neurological differences like a propensity for left-handedness and gifts in arts/mathematics, and other things. check out the wiki article, it's where I got the above information. -

yeah, this is true, babies begin to learn, differentiate sounds and even tastes in womb. "polyglot" is the term for someone who knows multiple languages and i hear it used to describe people who pick up languages more rapidly than normal. There's another term: hyperpolyglot! For someone who speaks more than 6 languages. My wife is like this actually, she speaks: local chinese dialect, tagalog, madarin, english and some spanish and russian. She learned english when she was twelve and she learned russian in her mid twenties in preperation for a mission trip to kazikstan. The wikipedia.org entry for polyglots is actually pretty interesting. It lists some of the more impressive hyperpolyglots, people who speak 50 different languages! -
the tv commercial shows the gunpods on the belly plates without FAST packs... so I don't see why they wouldn't stay on in fighter mode.

Curently Watching SDF Macross TV Series
eugimon replied to misterryno's topic in Movies and TV Series
I was there, i was in asia when DYRL hit and I remember seeing all those chunky monkeys on the shelves at retail stores. I also remember my cheap ass dad not buying any for me... he bought golf clubs instead. 20 years later, I still love macross while he sold those clubs at a garage sale.... -

standby mode keeps the CPU alive (barely) and saves the data in your memory, but the HDD and display are shut down, so yeah, your downloads would stop in standby mode. -
It was number 7 movie in japan with 34 million, compared to the number 1 movie: Pirates of the Carribean, which made 91 million. The pokemon movie was number 5 at 42 milliion. So, "okay" is about the best you can say of it's performance.

About Millia 639 (Miria) in Macross 7
eugimon replied to Isamu test pilot's topic in Movies and TV Series
actually, there was a recent study... if you haven't been exposed to different languages by 2 years, your brain doesn't really map foreign sounds as "words". By the 10th month, babies are already distinguishing which sound combinations are important. This goes to what Sumdumgai was saying. A baby only hearing korean will not learn to hear the "z" sound as important or differentiate "l" and "r". Just like, as you pointed out, english speakers are likely to pick up the nuances in korean. This also goes to why so many chinese have perfect pitch (some studies say as much as 95% as opposed to the opposite ratio for european language speakers). When they took brain scans of infants who were exposed to multiple languages their brain activity was different. Babies from multi-lingual homes could properly identify various sounds and word groupings as "language" while babies from mono-lingual homes could not. Foreign language words/sounds/word groupings were just "sounds". As for learning languages later in life, of course you are correct Sketchly. But some people have a gift for languages and some people don't. It does invovle rewiring your brain and training your ear to pick up new sounds. I have a friend who works for the US Air Force as an analyst and she has a gift for languages, she can pretty much become fluent after 6 months of consistent exposure and she's able to "pick up" languages from asia and europe with similar ease.
