High Definition Media & Technology Thread

huh... all the avc versus vc-1 comparisons I've read say the reverse, that AVC produces a softer image. I know that the eastern promises disc has an amazingly sharp picture. coming to america is supposed to have a better vc-1 transfer, chronicles of riddick as well. And there are more than a few complaints about the artifacting in PoTC: DMC. So, I think notorious is a bit extreme. And again, best reviewed audio track of 2007 was the HD-DVD version of 300. -

Not sure what you're complaining about. Most of the newer universal releases are VC-1 encodes with dolby trueHD audio tracks. Just like most of the newer blu-ray discs are vc-1 with DTS HD, or whatever variation they're on now. While I agree that the extra space on a blu-ray disc would probably have meant a show like The Kingdom would have gotten a lossless audio track, the visuals would be identical. Sorry, but this really reminds me of the blu-ray commercial playing where some guy proclaims that Blu-Ray just looks better. Fonboyism aside, looks like HD-DVD canceled their CES press conference. -

given how much of a blu-whore Bay is, a blu-transformers disc is probably already mastered and just waiting for the embargo to end. Maybe this one will have a proper HD audio track. Universal is the big HD-DVD lynch pin, they have a ton of titles out there. -

I lean blu if only because I have a kid and I know I'll be buying the entire disney/pixar library in blu-ray in the coming years. In the meantime, i'm actually quite happy with my HD-DVDs and the library available on it. I just got breach, the kingdom, eastern promises and some other movies so I have plenty of stuff to watch until I get around to buying a PS3. -

Amazon also put better titles up on the blu-ray bogo than the HD-DVD. Oh well, time to go purple. I've actually bought ten or so HD-DVD titles since I got my 360 add on, but since it seems pretty clear now that once paramount's 18 month exclusivity deal is up, so is the format... there seems very little point in continuing to buy any more HD-DVD titles. -
yeah, I know. I'm just playing... in eugimon's omega pants.

nah, that one was pretty good. On the other hand, kanedaestes is at least trying now, unlike his sad previous "love me' attempt. Still, he's a bit like carrot top trying to tell a joke without a prop.

*yawn* any joke you need to explain = epic fail.

the only thing I find insulting are these weak ass roasts. They've been uninspired and unoriginal, some simply parroting better posts before them. They've been obvious and repetitive, completely uncreative and with precious little for variety. it's like being roasted by Jeff Ross. Besides, it stokes my ego getting all this attention... ......in Eugimon's Omega Pants™

This is one also gets low marks, implied prostitution is always smacks of low class comedy, besides... while I appreciate tips, I don't take orders. ......in Eugimon's Omega Pants™

because bioware has already stated that all 3 ME games are supposed to be within the 360's expected product cycle and most people believe the 360 will have a 5 year life span. Anyways, think about it... existing engine, existing character models, existing story, why would it take longer than a year? -

it's just the old ME counter, it reset when the game came out and they haven't taken it down. If you click on it, it just says ME is out and gives you some retail stores. -

well, if MS does announce HD-DVD support for games, they'll have to replace/retrofit everyone's console... or there will be lawsuits. -

god, look at all the flak sony gets for having blu-ray tacked on to the PS3... and think of all the rabid fanboy hatred there already is for MS. If MS launched the 360 like this, there would have been universal clothes tearing and teeth gnashing that MS was bullying themsleves into the home electronics market and that they were typically bloating up their hardware just like they do their software. -
this one doesn't really work for me. low marks for lack of originality (exo already did this gag) and the double entente doesn't really work. It's like you just wanted to contribute something... ... in eugimon's omega pants.

yeah, texture pop is a big technical problem. I've read some ideas ranging from the UT engine is the SUX or that it's a memory limitation of the 360. Basically that the 360 can't pruge its memory so that after you've been to more than a few locales the 360 can't purge the tectures for the old locations from memory and is forced to load it from the disc. I kinda agree with that theory.. I usually notice the texture pop after I've done a bunch of side quests and then land on a main quest planet. Rebooting the 360 seems to help and after that, I get a few hours of more or less smooth sailing. -
time and tide waits for no man - means that nature and events run their course, whether you want them to or not. So things are always changing, seasons come and go, events happen to you and around you. It's a pretty common theme in these slice of life type shows. The characters just live out their lives and things don't always come to a big climax or get resolved... the just kind of move along in their lives... kinda like real life.

yeah, this is a great show, one of my favorites.

the neither option is the same as renegade. Actually, I over simplified, so there are 3 determinants to the ending. how you played the game (paragon/renegade) How you end the game (save or let die) Who you choose at the end of the game. how you play the game will affect political stance earth makes at the end of the game How you end the game will affect the political makeup of the council who you choose will affect the specific military stance of the council. So, say you do: renegade/paragon/politician: your ending would go: Earth-centric, human led council with strong diplomacy. renegade/renegade/military: earth-centric, human dominated poiltical war machine. -

the endings: paragon/paragon end paragon/renegade end renedage/paragon end renegade/renegade end each ending is slightly different with the big difference being between paragon end versus renegade end. -

well, that's my point. Not everyone wants an HD set, they just want something as big as the one that died and they HAVE to upgrade. Well, that's great for your father in law but maybe not so great for you... But like I've said, I know plenty of very smart, even very technically smart people who just want the basics out of their sets. Forget about cables and SD versus HD content, these guys don't even play with the contrast and brightness settings on their sets, forget about fiddling with color or geometry. They plugged in their TVs and whatever the factory set their screen to, that's what they watch. Again, they''re not stupid or even lazy, they just don't care. -

Oh wait, sorry, I was thinking CC. Yeah, best buy has SD sets. But at either store, the SD sets they have or no name brands or those little cabinet TVs. You have to admit, gone are the days when you could pick up a nice big screen SD WEGA. If you want anything over 30" you have to go for an HD set. Meh, people have different priorities in life. Not everyone is a technophile. My friend is a sys admin at google, taught himself enough linux to get a job there but has a hard time putting together his own box and doesn't really care that much about AV stuff. Last time I checked, he still had his PS2 hooked up with the s-video cable I bought him to his 7 year old WEGA. I know another guy runs an IT department and his rig at home is an old CRT HD proton tv and he has a full proton (his family runs it) AV setup but doesn't have anything other than the TV hooked up to the cable box. He also just doesn't care. Not everyone cares, they see a picture on the tube and its good enough for them. -

Well, that's why I said in my first sentance that not everyone we're knocking for not knowing the ins and outs of their sets bought them... Besides, it's not like you can even buy SD sets at BB or CC anymore anyways. But here's the thing, people ARE asking questions at best buy or Fry's or where-ever. They're just getting bad information. People just assume that sales people know what they're talking about and accept what they hear. Anyways, my point was just that not everyone who has these things and sets them up wrong or doesn't utilize it to the fullest is stupid. They could be lazy, or misinformed or forced to upgrade by well intentioned relatives or greedy sales people. Besides, not everyone is a technophile and not everyone buys a new set every decade. My parents used their old sony console TV until I bought them a new panasonic TV... 5 years ago and that's the TV they're using now. They don't know about HDMI because it's meaningless to them. The apple mentality is a very valid one. They don't want to know how it works, they just want it to work.
