Mobile Suit Gundam 00 - <<Season 1>>
eugimon replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
really? I saw it coming a mile away. They had "tragic ending" written all over their happy little lives. -
I'm going to see if I can do something with magnets.

That doesn't make much sense though. Stane is looking right at the MKIII when he says his suit is more advanced besides, stane also says something to the effect of: my suit isn't as conservative as yours. And remember, by this time, Stane knows that Tony has a new suit since scarface already told him about tony wiping out the weapons depot.

I gotta agree with David and the others. There's plenty of bass in the movie... god knows when blackout is shooting his gun every shot would make the sofa rumble, but during the particular scene where the EMP goes off, the bass is lacking. I felt a slight rumble... on the other hand, during the freeway chase where optimus transforms, every step is thunderous -
again, the "weak dollar" is nothing compared to the 600% increase in the cost of oil. That's for everyone, not just americans, europeans aren't buying oil at 15 euros. Other OPEC nations have not followed suit, OPEC trades in dollars: http://www.dailyreckoning.com.au/hard-currency/2008/01/10/ From Wiki: Since currently worldwide oil sales are denominated in U.S. dollars, changes in the value of the dollar against other world currencies affect OPEC's decisions on how much oil to produce. For example, when the dollar falls relative to the other currencies, OPEC-member states receive smaller revenues in other currencies for their oil, causing substantial cuts in their purchasing power. After the introduction of the euro, pre-invasion Iraq decided it wanted to be paid for its oil in euros instead of US dollars causing OPEC to consider changing its oil exchange currency to euros, although after Iraq's invasion, the interim government reversed this policy, and the subsequent Iraq governments stuck to the US dollar.[16] Member states Iran[17] and Venezuela[18] have undergone similar shifts from the dollar to the Euro. I confused iraq and iran there... iran is an OPEC nation, Iraq technically is, but their oil is not part of OPEC quotas.

Uhm... no... a religious fundamentalist wouldn't name a plane the "messiah". Messiah sounds more like the name of a gundam in the current 00.

your arguement is only partially true. The value of the dollar has fallen around 10% in the last few years but the price of oil has gone up nearly 600%. More than can be accounted for the decline in the dollar or the decrease in supply (due to rising global demand). The single largest reason for the spike in oil prices has to do with speculative buying. People think oil will go up in price, so they buy it and then, oil goes up in price. As far as the Yen versus Dollar. This is all Reagan's fault. Back in the 80s, US manufacturers and the car industry in general began to be hammered by japanese imports. The dollar was worth more than the yen at the time and so american consumers began buying up bargain priced japanese imports. The car companies lobied and I believe Baker came up with the Plaza accord where the USA would ACTIVELY devalue the dollar against the yen. The Reagan administration argued this would simultaneously protect american markets while making american made goods more affordable and thus easier to sell in Japan. The japanese agreed and the dollar lost half of its value against the yen. Only things didn't work out that way, Americans still bought japanese made goods over American made goods, we just paid more and Japanese still bought japanese goods... but they also bought up a lot of american real estate and some companies... only they paid less. PS: Oil is bought and sold in DOLLARS. That is, when someone buys a barrel of oil, they pay the nice OPEC man a fistful of dollars. That's what OPEC wants. So, if oil is trading at 122 USD, it costs 122 USD or the equivalent in euros or yuan or yen. So yes, the dollar is worth slightly less now than it was 8 years ago but again, 600% increase in the cost of oil far outstripes the gain of the euro or yen versus the dollar. addendum to post script: "slightly less" is compared to the yen: in 2000, 1$ = 105 yen, 2008 1$= 101 yen (lowest point this year). The Euro on the other hand is worth something like 30% more now than when it was introduced in 1999.

I'm not sold on "messiah" but at least I won't be embarrased by the name. When my wife saw my miyazaki DVD collection she just about died laughing "laputa" she said was bad enough but she thought "kiki's delivery service" was hentai. While I'm aware of the 'actual' meaning of laputa, apparantly 'kiki' also has another meaning where she's from (the philipines). -
several characters mention what a boozer Stark is, the foundation for his alcholism is clearly laid. Yinsen mentions quite clearly that the first time he met Stark was at some conference where Stark gave a lecture boozed out of his mind. And early on, Stark is seen in almost every scene with a drink in hand. He's drinking at the casino, he's drinking in the 'fun-vee' he drinks right after the Jericho presentation, he's drinking with rhodes in the plane going to the jericho presentation...

This is a cultural thing that doesn't translate very well. Japanese culture is *very* prohibitive against showing PDA... for instance, there was a time when a bunch of Japanese nationals were held hostage for a month, they were released and there was a big celebration at the airport and their family members were all there. As the men disembarked, they would bow to their families and walk off, no running up and hugging or kisses, just a respectful formal bow. So when sheryl or some girl goes in for a kiss in anime... well, that's a big startling thing for the receiving party. -

So far I'm leaning towards K.K. She's down to earth, thoughtful and yet knows how to have a good time and all the while she's mature and confident. What's not to like?

Why bother to post then? If you don't like it, stop reading these threads and move along. I don't understand the compunction of people who drop in a conversation just to say how much they don't care, or how they're so above it. Anyways, people are free to criticize or praise whatever they want but if what they're saying does make sense, well, why shouldn't that invite discussion. Like the people who keep saying MF is a lolicon, PROVE IT. -

But those aren't nuanced points, they're major plot points that illustrate very real differences between the characters of SDFM and MF. How can you say that the dynamics of the relationship between the main characters is analogous to counting trees? And you're playing it both ways. You said that Ranka inviting Alto to the pagent was a similarity with SDFM, not true Minmay told hikaru about it and he acted like a jealous tool, Alto encouraged Ranka to try and was happy for her. You also said that ranka noticing alto left was a major plot point that was similar to SDFM. When it clearly is not, Minamy didn't notice hikaru came and didn't notice when he left and it didn't affect her performance at all while Alto leaving clearly affect Ranka and her confidence. Either those character moments are "major plot points" or they're nuanced tree counting, you can't have it both ways. And again, you completely missed the MAJOR plot point of that sequence, introducing culture to the zentradi, not explored at all in MF. -

he then proceeded to outfly the AI controlled ghost, I don't see how you can call that not "functioning" which is what Mr. March asked: have we seen a valk with damage comparable to the alto's vf-25 before in macross. Yes, the yf-21. -

Speed? In space? Thrust is thrust, GERWALK and battroid would be just as fast in space since things like aerodynamics and lift don't matter. -
hmmm, looks like my mocking sarcasm didn't quite make it across.

This being MW... the gun barrells are too short, the mast to the radar isn't thick enough, grey? stupid yamato got the color wrong! Why can't they just release the rifleman and the warhammer as swappable torso's with a standard set of legs, stupid yamato is ripping me off?!

scene for scene? I'm sorry, that's a patently false statement and you know it. The only sequence that has come across so far as a direct re-imagining of SDFM was the alto/ranka save sequence. Every other sequence has gone dramatically different. "stuck" sequence: They didn't get lost they escaped being sucked out into space and people knew exactly where they were.. oh yeah and there were three of them. "Miss Macross" Starts off similarly but not only does Ranka lose but notice how alto differs from Hikaru. Hikaru bumbles through his mission because his mind was on minmay and on the pagent where-as alto was very much on the job. Their attitudes towards being war are dramatically different as are their relationships with their wingmen and ozma/roy. The timing of the events are also different. When Hikaru sorties, he's already a pilot of some note having saved Misa as well as being promoted and given his own squadron, alto is still a trainee. And that really is it. If you want to say that MF is copying or remaking SDFM point for point, where are the equivalents of 'daedalus attack', 'bye-bye mars' or 'longest birthday'?. Those three episodes had key moments that established Misa's character, her past and set up her relationship with Hikaru. Did MF do anything even remotely similar to establish sheryl and her relationship to Alto? Nope, they went on a date. You're picking out some memorable moments and completely ignoring the many ways those moments differ from SDFM and you're ignoring all the myriad ways the show is completely different from SDFM. And for all you people complaining of "loli" in MF, I'm still waiting for that screenshot of a loli moment. MF has about the same level of fanservice as gundam OO and FAR FAR FAR less than even Eureka 7 or hell, Macross 2. -
Yeah, I really hope they re-imagine the Mandarin entirely. Make him more of a political/military/religious leader, someone who is antithetical to Stark. A populist or religious leader who is able to use charm and charisma to affect his broader political plans where-as Stark is more of an elitest with a more myopic view of humanity.

I was thinking the same question, but from the opposite side of it: If fighter mode is the most vulnerable mode, why is fighter mode the apparant mode of choice for engagements?
