Well, when abrams says things like "It is a brand new thing inspired by..." I don't think people should expect a 100% continuity faithful movie. DS9 and TNG already showed they're perfectly capable or reproducing the sets and look and feel of TNG. And if it wasn't some sort of reboot, I would have expected Abrams or the studio to correct all those film sites that have been calling this one. And yeah, I don't mind changes to the enterprise... I may not like specific details or certain aspects on this new design, but overall, it's still the enterprise.
-
singer himself has said that superman returns doesn't follow 100% after superman II and that it's equal parts homage and sequel. And the fact that abrams won't give a definitive answer on whether this is a reboot/prequel makes it pretty clear that this, like superman returns, is a little of both. And the new enterprise doesn't look exactly like any previous enterprise, there are changes to every element... some, like the bridge and hull have extensive changes.
-
meh, from his quote it seems pretty obvious that Abram's take on this trek movie is like Singer's take on Superman Returns. Remain faithful to the original without being slavishly so and set it up for a new direction. And while the designs may be retro, they're hardly TOS retro, completely different look and feel . also, it's not just us here at MW calling this a reboot, every nearly every film media site is calling this a reboot.

Q: What made you touch Star Trek? JJ: I think it was the opportunity to tell a story that was based on a world and characters that I felt were just compelling and optimistic and the opportunity to treat that universe with a kind of energy and excitement and the resources we had. It didn’t feel like a classic reboot or prequel. It is a brand new thing inspired by characters that are poised to make a big comeback. http://trekmovie.com/2008/10/11/abrams-sta...oot-or-prequel/ "inspired by" hardly sounds like "same continuity"

Yamato 1/60 VF-11b under development

yeah, that's the guy. At the end he was accusing people of being racists for not believing him. He also claimed to own a ferrari or a lambo or was it both? -
Yamato 1/60 VF-11b under development

no... not agent one. -
yeah, the 1s is just so tall that it really showcases the wonky head placement, the 1j and 1a heads pretty good on the 1/6 v2 to me. Can't wait till i get mine!

Yamato 1/60 VF-11b under development
eugimon replied to Shaggydog's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
We actually found a giant temperature controlled warehouse out in the desert. Had a couple of high-end sports cars in there as well as several thousand valks. We sell off the cars now and then to pay the lease on the warehouse and divided up the valks amongst ourselves. -

yeah, there's an actual story and it gives some hints into the story of the locusts.. it's not much of a story but it's there. -
1. there were gadgets, most business cards aren't tracking devices and most tables don't have an uber version of MS surface 2. camera placement was not confusing, if you can't tell the difference between an aston martin with no door, a jeep and an alfa romero, that's too bad. 3. there were plenty of quips, for instance, just because they weren't delivered with a wink and a nod to the camera doesn't mean they weren't there. 4. and yes, a few days after the love his life dies after betraying him, the only person he ever let himself be vulnerable with, of course Bond is going to fart every girl he sees.

The Macross Quarter. DX Chogokin
eugimon replied to 505thAirborne's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
oh jeebus, I swear, don't get your panties up in a little bunch. It's not a slam on bandai, they do 80's style mecha better than anyone else; the Quarter is hardly some sleek anorexic design so big metal joints and plenty of diecast should blend right into the design. -
meh, I'll take anything except for voyager over the "real" TOS any day. And the this reboot rubbish looks very good to me. It actually has me excited for star trek and it's been years since the last time that happened.
-
feh, it is not james bourne. It is still very much Bond, more serious but it's still the big black and white morality play, still the hot bond girl of the week, still the quippy one liners, still the exotic locations and over the top action sequences, still the high tech gadgets (the more rooted in reality).
-
yeah, I liked it as well. definitely better than voyager and a great deal of DS9 and early TNG.
-
I agree that it isn't perfect but I thought it was a great follow up to casino royale. And frankly, I don't get people who wonder where the Bond one liners went... the movie is full of them, they're just delivered in a dry sardonic manner rather than the usual tongue in cheek wink at the camera fashion of past movies. And given Solace follows immediately Royale, Bond being in a dark and brooding place made perfect sense.

time travel is fine as long as at the end of it all there's just one continuity, but with Voyager and Enterprise and to some extent with DS9, the writers created at least two timelines, one in "real time" that the viewers followed but also a future timeline that was linked to the present but was also 'fixed' in that at the resolve of each episode, the future that we saw was confirmed as the "correct" future. Voyager was the worst offender, in my opinion, with their "time cop" version of starfleet... blegh. Eventually Trek writers were going to write themselves into that future setting and being locked into a design/technology aesthetic born in the late 90's is more of a liability than anything else. For me, this is the reason to do a reboot... so Trek can grow organically again without having to worry about meshing their stories with the snipets of the "future" that were shown in various episodes... and to save themselves from having to answer to irate fanboys at conventions why the instrument panels in ST: the next next generation don't look exactly like the instrument panel from episode 666 of ST: Voyager...

yeah and it's not a dollar per disc, it's a dollar per month on top of your existing plan regardless of the plan, so 1 disc at a time or 4 discs at a time, still 1 dollar extra per month. so, in my case, it's like 10 cents extra per blu-ray. I just can't get worked up over something like that. edit:: It IS disappointing, especially considering that now there's only 1 HD format, Netflix costs should have theoretically gone down and as mikeszekely pointed out, blu-rays are penetrating the market and because I suspect that the fees are actually being used to prop up features like "watch instantly" and there are still titles I have to wait on, like American Gangster which still has a "very long" wait time... but at the end of it all, netflix has been fast, consistent and has offered a wide variety of titles. But even with those... it's still just 1 dollar a month.

but it wasn't a reboot, it tried to fit itself into the continuity. And even if it was supposed to be a reboot, it's not the idea that was flawed but the implementation. I agree with Hurin, trek writers really wrote themselves into a hole with all their time travel stories... scrapping the whole convoluted mess and starting over isn't necessarily a bad thing.
-
no, that would be silly. Kirk's dad made the ship out of kirk's mom's DNA.
-
yup, I'm sure that's it. The cop is probably an agent of Kirk's dad, and kirk's dad secretly built the enterprise just for him and kirk will instinctively know how to captain it. And when kirk yells, "photon torpedo attack!" with all his heart, the enterprise gets stronger and defeats romulans.

Military (real) Mecha Anime VS Super Robot Anime
eugimon replied to AIRMAG's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
eureka 7 isn't really a real robot show... -
it took a while for my replacement set to arrive and in that 2 months or so, the frequency and duration of the line decreased but it would still pop up after the TV had been on for a while.

I had a similar problem with my samsung, I think it had something to do with the stand since when I rotated the screen it went away. I would contact sony and get tech to look at it or just return in.

Military (real) Mecha Anime VS Super Robot Anime
eugimon replied to AIRMAG's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I'd choose "real robot" as well, but super robot shows can be great fun as well. There's a level of epic greatness achieved in gunbuster and gurren lagann and the like that's just so much fun. I put gundam in with evangelion... super robot shows with a smattering of realism -

well, given the sales figures and the bit after the credits role, I think a part 3 is guaranteed.
