"sigh" I miss the Celica. I think I've only seen a Celica All-trac on the road once. It's a shame Toyota never brought the ST205 Celica GT-Four to the US.

JAS-39 Gripen. The Mazda Miata of fighter jets.

Watched it last night and going to be watching that ending again later when I have the time. Indeed, a great finale.

I think that was answered above. You're right in air support of any kind is not going to be used if the enemy is practically ontop of your position. Is the A-10C GBU-38 or JDAM capable, or do its new systems simply accommodate laser-guided munitions?

Wasn't something like this pitched to the Air Force for a small and cheap CAS aircraft? I forget the name. Also, a too close view of what the receiving end of an Avenger looks like. Choppers can't always get their in time.
-
The B-1R seems like a good a investment if the Lancer is looked towards to play a CAS role over strategic bomber for the long term. But as grigolosi points out, it seems the Air Force high brass has its head far up some place. If Air Guard and Reserve units weren't being squeezed so bad, I'd say that A-10 Guard units should be maintained.
-
As long as the sensors work. You're correct, there are many aircraft that can fill the CAS role. I still think the A-10 has a place in the Air Force though. It's long loitering capabilities still gives it a strong hand in anti-insurgent missions and COIN operations. Not too mention being more cost-effective. That said, they would be under serious threats in a region with tougher air defenses such as the S-300, Tor, Pantir and any big array of MANPADs.
-
Well The Air Force is now taking a "Come Hell or high water" stance on retiring the A-10. http://theaviationist.com/2016/03/24/us-air-force-retiring-a10-anyway/ I can just picture the Army's reaction.

I'd rather see Nissan work on developing an R36 finally. If they can keep the array of electronic wizardry in a next-gen GT-R but place it in a leaner chassis, I'll be happy.

A Miata would be an awesome "second" car to me. Still hoping for a Mazdaspeed version sometime.

Saw that. Agreed on how far safety has come over the years, particularly since Ayrton Senna's death.

Always neat seeing the shape contrast between the old-Cold War horses like the Su-24 and the smoothed out Su-30 and 34. No doubt the hours put in were pushing the aircraft to their limits, especially the Fencer and Frogfoots. The Russians are still keeping a number of aircraft there along with their ground personnel and air defenses.

Chopped up footage of withdrawing Sukhoi's over the weekend from Syria. Taxiing Su-25s look as unstable as a U-2.

So I take it the intent currently with Raptor is to stick with the F-22A but keep upgrading via Blocks?

So an EB-52 Megafortress could become a reality.

It just looks forced to me. I'll probably see it, eventually.

I'm pretty much in with the "We're stuck with the F-35; have to just iron out the problems." crowd. I still have issues with the philosophy inside the AF of essentially creating a 2 fighter aircraft force. I think it leaves some critical gaps that I don't see the F-35 being able to fill. I feel that there is still a strong place for a deep interdiction aircraft (F-111 & F-15E), especially with the advances in AD capabilities among China and Russia. The proposed FB-22 never got off the ground which really disappointed me and the B-1R seems to have been shelved.

I'd say the Focus ST and RS are that competition. There are also rumors that the next Mazdaspeed 3 (MPS) will be AWD aswell. The issue with the STi atleast over here is that it still using the dinosaur EJ25. That will change next year though. I am hoping some competition breaks out between Subaru and Ford.
-
An ironic turn given the AFs aversion to low-tech airplanes now. I can just imagine a room of old brass looking at both designs and tilting their heads at the YF-23 like it's some new tech gadget they can't make heads or tails of.
-
The one interesting feature about the YF-120 that wasn't in the YF-119 was it apparently could mimic a turbojet in high-altitude cruising conditions. Regarding upgrading the F-14. For the Tomcat21, I think plans were to move to the F110 GE-129s uprated maybe to around 30,000 while the idea of throwing in F119s was also played around with for a later update.
-
I loved the potential the YF-23 showed, especially with more innovative engines like the GE YF-120s. I also wonder if a design like the 23 will be taken more seriously in the future with advances in air defense technology like S-400.
-
As I recall, the 23 could only store 4 missiles in it's main bay with an additional bay for 2 Sidewinders. It would have, as stated above, have taken alot of modifications to make that design accommodate bombs I think. Use the YF-23 as inspiration for the 6th Gen fighter design which I think Northrop is planning to do.

I miss the days when Mitsubishi was still in the sports car scene. I'm surprised though with how many clean Evo Xs there are for sale out there. On the other hand, finding a clean, stock Evo VIII or IX becomes a daunting search at times.
