Oh, did I not mention that I decided shortly after reading Le Poseur's post that I was going to just go with "Lieutenant". . . No "Mr.". . . because I'm now convinced that Minmay made no mistake and wasn't even teasing him. And "Lieutenant" translates best to common english usage. For the record, I thought she was either making a mistake or teasing him because I blindly accepted the notes on a script somewhere online as fact. Oops. H

I don't own a mazinger, but all my 1/48 battroids are very solid. My one 1/60 is droopy as hell (especially the legs). So I understand your concern. The 1/48 has very stiff (in a good way) hips and joints througout. You won't be disappointed. H

Gee dude. Thanks. I only spent roughly 300 hours on this project. I'm happy to know that you consider it completely and utterly stupid. Thanks for sharing! a) There is no "good" dub of DYRL. b) Most people do not have the time nor the inclination to friggin' "learn Japanese" just so they can enjoy a twenty year-old anime. Not to mention, you'd have to be fluent to just sit down and understand all the dialogue. So, five years or so of constant study? Sounds good! It's not like I have a job or a life or anything. I'd best get cracking! c) You can turn the friggin' subtitles off. Thanks for dropping by. . . H

That's sorta why I was considering keeping it as "Gloval" as well. But, the Macross Pursists have spoken! And if I want to maintain my membership in the cabal, I dare not disobey their will. H

BAD! It's "Loves Drifts Away". . . RT-er! Burn him!

I don't want to sound like an @$$, but that price sure sounds like you bought a 1/60 instead of a 1/48. Just a though... They're talking about FAST Pack kit. Not the valk itself. H

Well, if there are two versions of the CF released, it sounds to me like the "Hobby Show" version will hardly qualify as a "release". . . it seems more to me like one of those Star Wars figures Hasbro will put out for people who attend a movie, or buy a game. I've never felt obligated to get each of those since they're usually minimally different than the main production run. Some of those who attended the re-release of RotJ got a Luke with a brown robe. . . and all the "collectors" went nuts to get one. The rest of us just said: Dude, it's a minor variant! You already have five Lukes! All of this is speculation, of course. I don't know anything at all. Of course, neither does anyone else. H

LePoseur, great news! That really makes it easier. Thanks! H

Hmmm. . . Is there some very specific, customary way of introducing yourself in Japanese, that perhaps Hikaur flubbed. . . perhaps by stating his rank, name, and position in the wrong order. . . and she's just making fun of him? H

Good point. Will do.

I think, for the sake of what's already there, and not confusing people with Misa's rank of Captain, I'm going to go with Admiral Global. Rank is settled. But I'm still toying with leaving Gloval as it is as well. H
-
Are you saying that there was no confusion on Minmay's part in the original Japanese (perhaps I'm mis-interpreting it)? Or are you advising me to just drop that confusion and have her address Hikaru as "Lieutenant" rather than "Mr. Lieutenant?"
-
That would be perfect. . . except she doesn't really interrupt him. He finishes his sentence and there's a pause! Darn, I would have liked to have used that!

So, in DYRL: Hikaru is 2nd Lieutenant. Then is promoted to 1st Lieutenant when he returns to the Macross after exploring the devastated earth. Misa: She is Captain at beginning and Major after returning to the Macross. Global: What should he be? (Navy) Captain (probably not since it would mistakenly make him look to be of same rank to Misa), Admiral, Commander, Brig General, or Colonel? And does it change as the movie progresses? I'm thinking Admiral only because it is the one that will make most sense in context to an English-speaking audience. Saying he's only a Commander or Captain will be confusing since people will hear that Misa is an (army) captain and possibly consider them equals! Here's a site that may only add to anyone's confusion! H

In the scene in DYRL where Hikaru wakes Minmay after rescuing her, he introduces himself as: "I...I'm Valkyrie Skull Squadron pilot, Hikaru Ichijo... 2nd Lieutenant." In Japanese (army), Second Lieutenant is "Sho-i." I had it as Ensign because that's what "Sho-i" is in the Navy. Now, Minmay mistakes "Sho-i" as being part of Hikaru's name, and refers to him for the rest of the scene as "Sho-i-san". . . or "Mr. 2nd Lieutenant." I find that this loses something in translation. Because it would much harder for an English-speaker to mistake a long two-word rank as a person's name than it would be to mistake the shorter Japanese "sho-i." I just can't imagine even the dumbest pop-star not realizing that a man's name isn't "Second Lieutenant." So. . . what to do? 1. Just tranlate it literally: "So. . . Mr. 2nd Lieutenant, do you know where we are?" 2. Leave the Japanese title "So. . . Mr. Sho-i, do you know where we are?" (but put a subtitle above it stating that Sho-i = 2nd Lieutenant) 3. Translate it semi-literally: Have Hikaru introduce himself as "2nd Lieutenant". . . but have Minmay call him "Mr. Lootenant." I think 2 is a good idea. . . but presents techincal problems since I'll have to end the introductory subtitle earlier and put the explanation subtitle up. . . thus squeezing things a bit. I think 3 actually preserves some of the humor. I really think that this line is in there to show that Minmay is a very naive and unworldly girl (who doesn't recognize a military rank when they hear it? Even when they aren't clear on its exact meaning?) Right now, I'm leaning towards 2 for its accuracy. But could be convinced to do 3 if nobody thinks it will seem to lame. Here's the entire dialogue: M: You rescued me, didn't you? H: I...I'm Valkyrie Skull Squadron pilot, Hikaru Ichijo...2nd Lieutenant. M: Thank you, Mr. 2nd Lieutenant. H: No problem at all. I'm a big fan of yours. M: I'm pleased to meet you. Do you listen to my songs? H: Y...yes. All the time. M: I guess everyone is worried. M: So, Mr. 2nd Lieutenant, do you know where we... H: Uh...could I have your autograph please? M: What? Oh, sure. M: Here you are. H: Thanks.

I didn't realize that avatar titles was the final word.

Well, I doubt you'd have to do that for the CF even if it is limited in a similar way (which nobody is sure of as we're all just speculating). . . the Low Vis didn't sell out very fast in the beginning. They were there for the taking for any motivated buyer for months. Only after they sold out did the price go through the roof. I guess maybe the CF will have higher demand. . . and I'm totally guessing here. . . but I doubt they'll be hard to get upon initial release. But don't wait too long before biting the bullet and buying. . . or you probably will be in LV-ville. H

Guys, I'm fixing a problem with ranks that I made in the DYRL subtitle project. And while at it, I might as well address another nagging question I've had: Is it Captain/Admiral Global or Gloval? I've seen semi-official pages say both. And we seem to not be as picky about this around here as we are with a lot of other character names. Currently, the subs use "Gloval". . . and I think it sounds less jarring to the western/english ear. But, if it's definitely Global, I'll change it. Oh, and the Compendium goes with Global. What's the consensus. . . or is there one? H
-
Well, at least nobody has been foolish enough to bid!
-
Sh!t. Where? Are you serious? Here Not really clear. . . but doesn't sound terribly good either! Normally, I'd wait for Kevin, but I put in one pre-order at HLJ just to be sure I get one (since I've been pining for this thing for so long). Then I'll get my other 1-3 from Kev. H

It has come to my attention (thanks Mechamaniac) that I got some of the ranks wrong in the subtitles. Hikaru introduces himself to Minmay as "Sho-i" which is "Ensign" in the Japanese Navy. . . but is "2nd Lieutenant" in the Japanese Army. I agree with Mechamaniac that "Ensign" was probably the wrong choice in that situation and that it should say 2nd Lieutenant instead. After all, I don't think the UN Spacy would let Ensigns fly valkyries! There is a similar problem with Misa's rank. That should be fixed and made more consisent as well. I think (I don't have the ability to check right now) that I got the ranks right when they are introduced on the stage where they join Minmay late in the film. But it's annoying (at least to me) that they aren't consistent throughout. I'll post a quick note when I fix the substream files. May be a few days.

Edit: I finally broke down and went ahead and fixed the ranks issue while I simultaneously imported and tweaked the R2 subtitles until they synched up. I have crossed out the now defunct info above.

It's just a common term for an over-sized book with large pictures that is commonly placed in a living room or a sitting room to entertain guests. It's not a novel. . . it's a picture-heavy book meant to simply give you something to look at (with some light reading).

This link is to a post to a DYRL HUD. Keep in mind that there are differences between the TV Series and the Move (DYRL) cockpit HUDs. Nevermind! That's to a VF-11 cockpit. My bad. H
