Howdy All, Remember when I said I wouldn't be updating the fx DVD subtitles any further? Well, I lied. Having had about five months since I last modified the Region 2 Bandai DYRL DVD subtitles, I finally felt motivated to bring the Region 2 project's bastard cousin up to date. . . and re-time its subtitles so that it is no longer quite so much of a . . . well, bastard cousin. So, without further rambling (it's late, I'm tired), here's the change log: 10/6/2005 Update: Imported and then synched (at more than one spot) the more accurate timings of the Region 2 Bandai/Emotion Subtitles Project. I think for the most part, I managed to preserve the "tight" nature of the R2 subtitles and there is a dramatic improvement over the timings I previously made available here for the fx DVD. Changed Hikaru to 2nd Lieutenant (from Ensign) in beginning. Changed it so that Minmay refers to him simply as Lieutenant instead of "Mr. Ensign." Changed all references to Roy Focker's rank to "Major" (instead of Commander). Changed all references to Misa's rank (prior to return from earth) to Captain. Changed all references to Misa's rank (after return to Macross) to Major. Changed Max's rank to "Captain" during period surrounding the Milia vs Max battle. Changed Admiral "Gloval" to "Global". . . because this is Macross, dammit. I have test-compiled and everything seems to work fine. However, I had to go through each line of dialogue for both subtitle streams (widescreen and non-widesreen) and re-add the formatting (italics, lyrics on top, etc.). If you see a lyric that isn't on top, or isn't italicized, etc. Please let me know. Thanks! H

Wesker99 and I have been working behind the scenes here to figure out why his subtitles got out of synch. The answer is: If you change any of the subtitles and regenerate the subtitle stream yourself, make sure that you choose "30-fps non-drop frame" before you click "generate subtitle stream." Of course, this is only necessary for those who are customizing the subtitles beyond what I've already done. Those just using the files as-is can ignore this. Finally, if what I'm working on today pans out, there will be less reason for people to want to tweak the subtitles themselves. . .

Well, to be fair, Misa doesn't look like Misa half the time in the SDF Macross episodes animated by AnimeFriend.

Whew! Glad you got it worked out. I was wondering if I sucked more than I thought I did! And thanks for letting me know. Now I don't have to test.

Deleting a line shouldn't have done that. But, if I recall correctly, there's a shortcut key that can shift everything around that might have accidentally been pressed. Don't put too much time into it before I get home and have a chance to test it out myself with the newer versions of the all the software that's now out there. Since I wrote those instructions, there's been a new version of DVD-Lab Pro. It may do things a bit differently and might be tweaking it. But, if you try one more burn with the pristine files above, do let me know if it comes out better and I'll spare myself the work! H

No problem, I get an email when this topic gets a reply. Jumping around really shouldn't matter or mess things up. At least, not on a standard DVD player or a computer that's doing things correctly. Do me a favor, go to the part where Kakizaki dies. Hikaru's scream of "Kakizaki" should be pretty close to being dead-on. When I would test a burn to see if the subtitles stayed synched, I'd usually test at least two spots: When Hikaru says: "Get 'em Max!" in the first battle. And where Hikaru screams "Kakizaki!" when K gets his butt blown up. If those two points are pretty-well synched for you, then I think your DVD is fine and you're just having issues with my shoddy timing job for the non-official release! But seriously, when I first started doing this, I actually preferred the subtitles to have a slight delay between when the dialogue was spoken and when the actual subtitle appears. But, again, as I got better at things, and my "subtitle tastes" changed, I got more picky and wanted the subtitles to be very snappy and appear almost instantly on top of the dialogue. So, when I abandoned the fx "unofficial" release and subtitled the Region 2 official release, I took the time (several days) to nudge just about every subtitle a fraction of a second back or forward until each one is darn near perfect. So anyways, I don't remember the timing on that scene (Hikaru and Misa early earth scene) being too terrible. But if memory serves (it has been a while), I think it was indeed a scene that I watched and said: "That could be much tighter" when I was working on the the fx release. Best, H

That's odd. I think it might have been something on your end. While these subtitles for the fx DVD aren't quite as "tight" as the ones for the official R2 DVD (this is no longer the case. The subtitle timings are largely identical between the two versions thanks to the 10/6/2005 update), they shouldn't be as bad as you're describing. What are we talking about here? Fractions of a second? Or full seconds? I haven't mastered an fx DVD for a while now, but I'd be willing to check it out if you continue to have trouble. Maybe it's a case of DVD Lab Pro's new version screwing something up? H

You won't. I don't think any of us did. 333663 True story. I never got anything from them except the confirmation email immediately upon ordering. Several weeks later. . . box on my door. H

Yep. Good demo. But there are a lot of complainers out there griping about how slow it runs on even high-end computers. I've got a high-end computer myself (Athlon X2 @ 2.5GHz, Dual 7800GTX SLI, 2GB RAM), and it's even slow for me (about 30fps @ 1600x1200 4XAA). But, well, it's a pre-release demo so I'm not ready to start whining just yet. Indeed, it does look like there are a lot of driver problems with it since SLI refuses to work in any mode with it and people get low framerates even with all the eye candy turned off. H

Uh. . . Nazis were Socialists, not capitalists. Nazi is short for "National Socialist Party." Fascism also describes them well. . . though that was techically the ideology of Mussolini's Italy. Yes, the terms Nazi and Fascist are largely interchangable nowadays (and you could say that the Nazis were fascist socialists as well). But, you could hardly describe them as capitalists. A society where the state is all doesn't leave much room for private enterprise or ownership. Edit: Oddly, the Nazis had an instituational fear and hatred of Communists. Even though, as Socialists, they were both on the stateist side of the political spectrum where economics were concerned and both needed to use brutal (fascist) police-states to maintain order under such systems.

No reason. . .

Where is Sulu when you need him?

Well, if you had to be associated with RT, you'd be turning red with shame too. H P.S. Don't anyone take that personally. While I prefer Macross, I understand some people still credit RT with giving them the opportunity to actually find Macross. . . blah blah blah.

IT'S A WEEKLY WORLD NEWS ARTICLE! IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH REALITY! 331734 Dude! Give him some credit! For once, he didn't mention Hitler or Mein Kampf!

Ah yes. Quite right. It's all clear now. Thank you!

There are a lot of fan(boy)s of another particular sci-fi franchise who feel this way a lot of the time.

I've seen "Micro$oft" and "Bu$h" and all sorts of other "clever" uses of a dollar-sign for an S. . . but for the life of me, I can't figure out why "stupid" has a $ in it there.

Just for the heck of it (waiting for a game to install), I thought I'd try my memory at putting them in chronological order. I'm probably off for a few of these though. 1. Hikaru VF-1A (DYRL) 2. Roy VF-1S (DYRL) 3. Max VF-1A (DYRL) Hikaru VF-1A -- 2nd Release Roy VF-1S -- 2nd Release 4. Low Visibility VF-1A 5. Hikaru VF-1J (TV) 6. Hikaru VF-1J w/ FAST Packs (TV) 7. Hikaru VF-1S 8. Max VF-1J (TV) 9. Milia VF-1J (TV) Roy VF-1S -- 3rd Release Roy VF-1S -- 4th Release 10. Production Type ("Cannon Fodder") VF-1A

Ditto. Mine came today (same order). They look brand new except a very tiny drill hole in the UPC code.

Can we somehow limit how much can be quoted?
Hurin replied to Metal_Massacre_79's topic in MW Site News & Member Feedback
Or maybe we, as users, could just politely point out to the worst offenders what they are doing. And they could edit their posts. But again, if I see superfluous, long quotes, I scroll down. Problem solved. -
If they really wanted to fool anyone, they should have left this part out. As far as I know, there is no way that we could see an asteroid from that distance (9 light years). Yet, we apparently have a nice polaroid of it being demolished by this menacing cloud. H

Can we somehow limit how much can be quoted?
Hurin replied to Metal_Massacre_79's topic in MW Site News & Member Feedback
Seems like a lot of people above in this very thread have used quoting to good effect. I didn't realize that made them homosexuals. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Are we talking about disabling quoting altogether, or at least leaving the tag functional for those who want to copy and paste manually? Either way, this is, IMHO, a mountain out of a molehill. Even that example of "quote abuse" above didn't hurt anything. It was a small image, and only is really downloaded once by the browser. But, to each their own. I can't imagine being bothered by it. . . but I'm bothered by a lot of things that everyone else seems to think is just fine. Though it would be somewhat sad if useful functionality was removed from the boards because it (unreasonably?) annoys a few members. H -
Are Pages Slow to load for you too?
Hurin replied to Roy Focker's topic in MW Site News & Member Feedback
I second that. MW nearly always blows every other Invision board away where speed is concerned. But, then again, I'm a geek who is always connecting via broadband with a faster computer. -
Oh yeah, I've tried several different automated IVTC patterns. There are several scenes that do keep a standard pattern for a few minutes. But there are long stretches of utter hell. H

That's hands-down the best Macross SDF-1 model I've ever seen. If I had the skills and the materials, I'd make one that looks exactly like that. H
