Just for the record, that quote from me that is now in AgentONE's signature is more than just a bit out of context.

Apologies if this has been posted already. But it looks like there's a pre-order for the Hikaru VF-1S at HLJ: Here. Edit: Man, that is one crappily typo-ed Title. If a mod happens to see it, would you mind fixing the S in "VF-1S" and the word "re-release?"

Glad someone explained it. Otherwise, this would have seemed very odd considering the dub vesion is due out in just a few days. I actually quite like that new box. H

When will some of you realize that bsu was not seriously suggesting that A1 become an admin and that A1 has no interest in being an admin? This thread is a joke. And by that, I don't mean it's lame. . . I mean it is intended to be funny. It is (literally) a joke. Nothing more. All the people posting serious analyses as to whether A1 would be a good admin are merely unintentionally contributing to the humor. When I last discussed this with A1, he was just as shocked that anyone would consider him a good candidate as I was!

You look at what's on the DVD. You look at the price. You calculate whether what's on the DVD is worth the price to you. You then decide whether to buy the DVD. A year later. . . You look at what's on the Collector's Edition DVD. You look at the price. You calculate whether what's on the DVD is worth the price to you given that you already own the movie in some form. You then decide whether to buy the DVD. I just don't see the problem. H

Amen. If there was ever anyone who treated MW as their own little play-thing to be poked, prodded and provoked for their own (non-Macross-related) amusement. . . it's A1. Or, well, A1 together with bsu. I mean, this thread is a perfect example. What is its point other than to be funny and, of course, get people talking about A1? For every one or two people who say anything even slightly negative about A1, there will be ten or so people kissing his ass. . . many with the apparent intent of getting with the "in crowd" around here. That's not to say I hate A1. I actually like him personally. But his antics and the sort of atmosphere they generate (I'm not talking about posting "vulgar" images) is poison for the long-term health of a community. . . even if they are amusing. With Macross news and products so scarce, AgentOne's ego has filled the void. Thus, nearly every thread contains a reference to his awesomeness by either himself, his immediate circle of cronies, or some sycophant wanting to be his next side-kick. H

Actually, I wasn't referring to that instance. I was thinking about the more blatant/overt sex-oriented avatars that are possible and made more blatant/overt via animation. H

I don't think Shawn has anything to do with it. If the goal were to save Shawn bandwidth expense, we'd still be allowed to host animated GIFs on our own web space (which would cost Shawn nothing). My guess is that this is being done because some dial-up users didn't like having to download large animated GIFs. And, unless I'm mistaken, a certain moderator around here is a dial-up user and has been grumbling lately about how slow the site has seemed. There's also the issue of "offensive" avatars being. . . well. . . more offensive when they're animated. Not that I recall every being offended by anyone's avatar (but that's just me).

I get the feeling that if I weren't already a Macross fan and/or I showed this to my fiance or someone else who was only a casual Macross viewer, they wouldn't have much of a problem with the voices. Having said that, I do. Hikaru's voice bothered me the most. Misa's (on the radio) was a close 2nd. The others weren't so bad. Do you think it's possible that they may "age" Hikaru's voice as he gets older and a bit more mature? Dear Lord, I hope so. . . because if he still sounds like that while commanding Skull Squadron, it's gonna be sad. H

And, as far as I know, these subtitles will only work on the fx version. Though, don't forget, there's also the subtitle upgrade for the Region 2 (official) version (see sig).

Based on how utterly different the two situations are, I think you mean to say that they are both "double dipping" in the loosest sense of the term. We're all praising choice here. Indeed, that's what my rants on my website are about. But choice is only useful to a consumer if they are aware that there is or will be a choice. A totally uninformed (or misinformed) choice is no choice at all. Now, making an uninformed choice can be the fault of the customer. But, in the case of the various HG DVD projects, there seems to have been a concerted effort to mis-inform their customers so that they would make "bad" choices (buying each edition of the DVD as they incrementally improved becase they had been told that no further improvements would ever be forthcoming). New Line made it abundantly clear to anyone even casually interested in the films that an extended edition would be made available. HG has (apparently) lied about and covered up its future for improved/extended/remastered editions in order to boost sales of currently available edtions. The two situations could hardly be more different. . . and I'm not sure I would consider multiple DVD releases "double-dipping" at all as long as the studio has made a reasonable effort to inform its potential customers of the choices available. Just because some fanboys have a compulsive need to buy all available editions of a film doesn't make it "double-dipping." Again, I don't have a dog in this fight. I can't really summon up much anger towards HG on this occasion. But, let's not apply the label of "double-dipping" with too broad a brush here. . . H Edit: Typos

No offense, but LotR is a terrible example. They were very clear that the Extended Editions would be made available in each case shortly after the originals. Fans were given a choice between which one they would buy and choice is a good thing. Though, as I rant about on my website, that didn't stop ignorant whiners from lamenting that Peter Jackson and New Line Cinema had somehow "cheated" them. I think a lot of people here are upset with HG for constantly just. . . well. . . flat-out lying several times in order to convince fans that no better or improved version of the their current releases would ever be made available. Thus, when RT first came out on DVD, they said they would never remaster it. . . so you'd better buy these. Then, after they remastered it, they said they would never dub Macross into english outside of RT. . . so you'd better buy the RT Remastered or the Animeigo DVDs. Now, they've dubbed Macross. That's far different than what happened with LotR. Anyways, I've stayed out of this thread until now. But I might as well give my opinion: I own the Animeigo set. I am interested in the english dub. So, I'll buy the new version too. I just don't feel like getting all worked up about how I've been "cheated." I wanted the Animeigo DVDs when they came out, and I was willing to pay what I did for them without a dub. Now that a dub is available, I've made the determination that I'm willing to spend money on them again. No big whoop in my book. H

Actually, the crappier the TV show was, the more likely it can get to DVD without any problems. But, there is a problem that many shows run into when the studio tries to release them on DVD. . . music rights. If the show featured quality, mainstream music, getting it onto DVD can be a pain. Over the last decade, many shows have made a habit of using very current popular music in their soundtracks. But, they often only secure the rights for broadcast of the show and not the home video rights. So, when the studio/producers want to release the series on DVD, they are faced with a huge number of songs for which they need to secure the rights all over again. . . and this is an insurmountable obstacle for a few shows that have random snippets of popular music strewn throughout each episode. Unfortunately, many studios just decide to replace the music originally chosen (and remembered fondly by the audience as the perfect touch to a scene) with cheezy synthesized music or 3rd-rate music from their own label. The show Ed is currently stuck in this situation. It was a great show, but probably won't make it to DVD any time soon (or ever) because of these issues. And, not to sound like a teenage girl, but Party of Five was largely stripped of its music for its DVD release, and certain scenes suffered greatly for it. Not that I'd ever watch Po5. . . or know to refer to it as Po5.

I really can't understand why everyone can't just say: "They put more effort into the designs for the movie (DYRL) since it was intended to be their Macross 'masterpiece.' So, while they prefer the more developed story of the TV series as the canonical continuity, they use the DYRL mecha and character designs as the basis from which they develop the visual style of the sequels and prequels." All the rest is just fanboy masturbation. Even if some of it is encouraged by "official" statements from BW or Kawamori himself. P.S. Though I do realize some of you are just trying to get a rise out of Keith. Which, of course, is always fun.

Calm down sweetie. "Musta hit pretty close to the mark to get her all riled up like that, eh kid?"
-
Why so fixated on how much time passed before they came up with the "concept?" I can think of a certain Sci-Fi movie series where a certain director/creator came back in a quarter-century later and fundamentally changed tons of stuff. . . and you've repeatedly said that you had no problem with him doing so. . .
-
Or, to put what JBO is saying a bit more simply: In what "historical" context are the later Macross series/movies placed? It is the official line (I believe) that SDF Macross represents the "real" story line or history while DYRL represents the official visual style. I don't think anyone is asking for explanations for how things can look different, etc. . . some people just wanna know what "really happened" given the two different takes on the events of Space War I. Or, in other words, when Isamu and Myung read their history books, does it reflect SDF:Macross or DYRL? Unless I'm mistaken, it's the former. But one can't fault the Macross powers-that-be for wanting to keep the cooler designs and superior aesthetics of DYRL even while they have designated the more fully fleshed-out TV series plot as the official "history." H Edit: Typos.
-
But DYRL is a movie within the Macross universe! 350127[/snapback] But seriously, how do you decide which one is the official timeline/plot without that invention? Does Kawamori or the other Macross powers-that-be have no weight in this debate? Cuz I'm pretty sure the "movie within the universe" is the official line. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'll go fill myself with vinegar and insert. . . H

Great post! Except, I think they all survive in Macross. You are still suffering from a minor RT taint!

I've never really understood why people think Flashback is such wonderful capper. If memory serves, we see Minmay wander around the streets, then decide to go on the Megaroad. . . Hikaru touches her arm at the concert and Misa smiles at her. Joy. I'm not sure that adds any more closure or a sense of completion any more than the original ending in Farewell to Tenderness.

I don't think there's any doubt that the post-LDA aftermath episodes were "tacked on." I could be mistaken, but I think that much is explicitly stated in either the liner notes to the Animeigo DVDs or during the interview track on the last DVD. I see many of your points. But, for me, Macross was never really about the long, bad-ass fights. I really can't think of any great battle sequences in the pre-LDA episodes except the Max and Milia duels. For me, the draw of Macross, even when I was a kid, was watching Hikaru (or, back then, Rick Hunter) chase the girl and deal with the incredible events in which he found himself involved. The cool transforming planes and battles were secondary. So, the aftermath episodes were welcome and remain so to me. Though, having read your post, I see your point(s) about the redundancy and Hikaru's rather lame decisions. I figure the next time I watch them (some day), I'll probably think less of them. But, I think I'll always have a fond place in my heart for those episodes because they represent the first time a fictional world to which I was very attached went to a rather dark place (for "children's entertainment"). I have always had a keen interest in the "aftermath" of stories as well. Whenever I would finish an Ultima game, I always wished that they would have made it possible to explore the world after the game ended and talk to the people who had just been saved. I guess I'm just an "epilogue" type of guy. One thing I like so much about the show Smallville is that they seem to have a standard of bringing the show to its climax at around the 3/4 mark. . . and then the last 10-15 minutes are spent addressing how the events up to that point have affected the characters and the overall plot. Best, H

There shouldn't even be a difference in the FAST Pack attachment points. All valks have them whether they came bundled with FAST Packs or not. You scared me there for a minute! H

Well, it's neat. But it doesn't really look like Roy to me. The face looks like a G.I. Joe to me. . . and the hair isn't very "Roy-ish" in both color and style in my humble opinion. Please don't take this as bashing. I think it's cool overall and I'm glad you like it. Hopefully, everyone will keep their criticizm constructive. H
