Macross World Podcast - feedback & comments
arbit replied to Tochiro's topic in Movies and TV Series
Given the Moe Apocalypse you regularly mention, I was enjoying the "What are you watching" section from previous podcasts. So what HAVE you been watching to get you through? Very few series have captured my interest the past decade or so. Some I've enjoyed for example are Dennou Coil & Steins Gate, but not too much actually comes to mind right now. (BTW, who coined that phrase- Moe Apocalypse? Its very fitting.)- 1147 replies

Hi Carl, You seem to be the authority on this. Do you know if Half Eye or Yamato were doing VF-1 garage kits as back as 1990? Im trying to figure out a mysterious kit I bought in New York at that time of a VF-1 TV Max kit that was surprisingly similar to the 2001 Yamato V1. i.e. similar in terms of being a parts-swapper with legs that pin on the nose cone. I no longer have the kit, but I have always wondered what the hell it was.

I have to show some support to the Macross II fans on this podcast. My experience with it was that I first saw a couple episodes English Dubbed, and I absolutely hated it. Then later I finally got it subbed on DVD, and I've enjoyed it ever since. Lots of Zentran love in the last few eps of that series.- 1147 replies

Oh yes, that was a great podcast. I think I heard it 2 or 3 years ago. I love the part about the broken valkyrie you unknowingly bought, and the guy gave you some diagrams for how to fix it!!! That's truth in marketing for you....- 1147 replies

Enjoying your reviews of live shows and fan gatherings. Since I'm up to date on all your recent podcasts, I've finally gone back to listen to the earlier episodes I missed. I love how episode 5 starts with an immediate apology!!!!! Great stuff. Renato, I have to agree with you that Frontier would be better if it was targeted to my grandmother You guys talk a lot about 7 and its positives and negatives. Here is my wish: someone should go back and add all the great music that was released after the series, in order to remove some of the repetitive songs from the show. There was amazing stuff released after that could help the pacing. I think I would re-watch that version. I can't stand hearing the same song pounded into my brain over and over.- 1147 replies

Hi Renato, Thanks. I'm aware of all that history from 2001 onwards. But what I'm talking about is something I bought around 1990, long before 2001. Could Yamato have been a design or garage kit or distribution group before? Need to look further into Yamato's history. I understand there were other related groups that became Yamato afterwards (Toycom?). I used to be certain that my kit was by Yamato, now with all the data available on the net, I am not 100% sure. As I said, I was well aware of Yamato or its related companies long before they released the v1 in 2001, which is why I did not go for it having already had experience with their stuff. As soon as I saw the name Yamato in 2001, I remember thinking "no thanks, no parts swapper for me. Been there done that". On the other hand, this model I had was probably a Bandai or Imai model, with a sticker from Yamato's antecedent companies that were distributing toys in the USA at that time. Which is why I mentally linked it to the same group. It was easy in those days to confuse distributors such as Toycom with manufacturers.- 1147 replies

I agree with you...That is basically what I was saying, in anticipation of all the gripping that will ensue when people see its just a reissue. Also hoping that more fun items will come out of it if sales are good. But if you look at it from a market and financial perspective, this line was not successful for Bandai when last released as Hi Metal, and they stopped after just a few valks. So with this reissue, they seem to be banking that the market for Macross has grown big enough following Frontier to succeed this time around without a major re-design. I hope they are right, but if people are not happy with the quality, then we will be back to square one and the line will stop before we get many rare items.

Great podcast guys. Enjoying every episode. One question for the modeling episode. I didn't hear mention of Yamato's scale valk models. I bought a model of a VF-1J TV Max version around 1990 that I could swear 99.9% was manufactured by Yamato and had their logo. I got it in a large comic store in New Yok I believe on Broadway near Columbia University. Anyone know anything about this model? I don't have it anymore because when I realized it was a parts swapper, I destroyed it from youthful fan rage. However, I clearly recall that when Yamato released the V1, I noticed that it was basically the exact same scale and transformation design concept as the model I had almost 10 years prior, and made by the same company, i.e. The legs pegged on to the nose cone, so I never went for it until the V2 came out. I have always wondered about this model. I am definitely sure that this was Yamato, however, there is always a chance of being mistaken.- 1147 replies

I don't want to attack Bandai. I love Bandai. But lets look at facts here: The toy color and design is fine for a low priced small figure. However, Bandai clearly has not put its A team on Macross in recent times, if ever. With this release, they are basically re-releasing the failed old line of Hi-Metal that nobody wanted, without any improvements. So this is really just a reissue. I was hoping it wouldn't be the case, but there you go. Secondly, and what is really confusing, is that there Bandai has not applied any of the significant manufacturing advances in the past few years from groups like Sentinel, Yamato, Fewture, and even Bandai's DX Chogokin and Metal Fig lines, which have made amazing strides in joints and tolerances. Lets face it, this series is geared for mass market to turn a profit, not geared for fans. On the bright side, if this means that Bandai will use the lower manufacturing cost (by avoiding a full redesign) to give us more rare figures, then I have to agree with them.

How much did it cost you and from where?

Any video review of this? Would love to see it in action.

I loved that podcast. Most Macross World Podcasts are just amazing. But the two on the history of scale models were exceptionally great. I had always been lost in terms of all the macross models out there, so it was really helpful to make heads or tails of them all and to know where to start.

Except I wouldnt know how to build a vinyl kit to a good level. Is that the mythical General Products Excellion? I have seen cool scratch builds. But I settled on the Kotobukiya Coin Excellion figure. Very nice finish for a trading figure.

MAXL, pretty please, with sound boosters. With all the Mac7 valks they did, I don't know why they never did the MAXL. Wasn't Mylene the most popular character?

One big hunk of metal. Great value for the price.
