    Well they did just go through a drastic change in their branding (going from Yamato to Arcadia) and we know they cleared out their old officers just to set up a new one somewhere else. I think it's a miracle they even came back at all after basically teetering on a knife's edge between selling expensive toys and making a profit. They weren't like Hot Toys who constantly land high profile licenses like Iron Man and can charge about the same for multiple versions of the same character and consistently sell out.

    You know mang, it's one thing to try to continue a story in a relatively short amount of time after the first bit ended but trying to do this "find the Rick Hunter" thing nearly 30 years later is just asinine. It complete ignores why Robotech was successful (i.e. riding off a completed and proven success that was seen as a novelty in its time) in favor of trying to keep the brand unchanging just to string along the faithful. It's like when they made Superman Returns and it tied into the old Donner movies. You got the brand to get people into seats but you've also alienated people by resting it all on some really old backstory that not everyone remembers. The whole world moved on and everything that happened at the end of Robotech became less and less important. They're done nothing to get new people interested and its getting tiresome.

    GOOD! Science fiction can go jump in a lake for all I care because people who are into it always look down on those who aren't. Even if it's awful action schlock, people still run up and down signing the praises as long as there was a space colony in the background. And disparaging long running shoujo and shonen series for having inferior artwork is purely subjective. Even if you don't like the character designs, those shows have just as much potential to have amazing artwork and great animation just like Macross did. And don't downplay the merits of popular shows just because they are popular. Despite their failings (which Macross has plenty of itself), those shows and their fans are just as capable of providing nuanced characters and solid entertainment while also resonating with audiences just like Macross did. And this is all completely independent of whether some designer drew out how ammo linkages in a robot's gun work in some art book.

    Macross wasn't made for adult audiences in Japan. It was made for made to primarily sell toys and model kits to kids. Do you think adults were buying lots of Takatoku toys?

    At least their foresight into color separation with the parts means the the Max and Millia types will look good out of the box. Small victories.

    Funimation is currently releasing both Aquarion EVOL and AKB0048 in the states so it's mostly a press promotional thing.

    Any scene where they're talking about something that is not happening on screen because the existing footage doesn't fit their new plot is pretty blatantly self contradictory. The whole SDF-2 thing, Dana's hair changing color (which Carl Macek once said all it took was a bottle of peroxide), things like the nature of Protoculture, etc. All of these things stem of course from trying to tie together three shows and also trying to work off rough translations. There's also a bunch of stuff simply left over the from original scripts (Jeanne Francis has a brother in Southern Cross but oops we forgot to get rid of that line in Robotech). It's a mess of characters, settings, and technology constantly being written out due to the fact the source shows were never meant to tie together. And if you want to talk about the "mythos" the only really important thing is constantly alluding to Macross so they can keep control of it. Macross is the only reason Robotech is popular as it was a ground breaking show so they have they have to keep reminding people that yes it still exists even in these completely different looking "sequels." At this point Mospeada is simply a means to an end as it's the only one of the three shows Tatsunoko (and by extension Harmony Gold) control entirely top to bottom in both Japan and the rest of the world. It kinda sorta looked the most like Macross so they can keep trying to dress it up as the real continuation. I am just sick and tired of having to deal with this broken old show that just won't go away.

    Someday people will understand that maintaining "canon" is not the end all be all for a franchise. Especially not in one that is inherently self contradictory like Robotech.

    Bandai has made other variable model kits (Non Gundam) that weren't this poorly designed.
