That's not a retcon. It's always been like that. This image has existed in the Macross Hobby Handbook and as part of the data card for the HCM VF-1 since 1983.

Because Macek was making some real HARDCORE SCI-FI with Xeno killin' rip-snorting dudes in power suits and jets like in those Tim Eldred comics. Just ignore the moe girls in Mospeada and the doofy protagonists.

To be fair, a lot of legit Macross fans think Kawamori is a useless hippie who can't do anything without Ohnogi/Ishiguro/Itano/Mikimoto/etc. He's the George Lucas of anime.

The fight choreography in Shadow Chronicles is so dull and lifeless that the action gives almost no reason for any of the robots to exist, let alone transform. They don't do anything robot-y. You could replace them with generic space fighters and it wouldn't have changed anything.

I'm not under 20, but honestly that's kind of apples to oranges. Despite them all being mecha shows, Layzner is more a serious war drama whereas Macross Frontier is just fun pop entertainment. Orguss is just ok. It's basically Macross with more a more meandering plot and Millia Athena going "ojisama! ojisama! ojisama! ojisama!" for twenty episodes. also Mohm the robot girl is totally moe~.

revisionist? the Miyatake design works shows the Macross having knees, ankles, hips, and shoudlers. but let's not let facts get in the way of nostalgia.
