C'mon guys, you shouldn't be too hard on the people who call your Macross toys "Robotech". They're not completely wrong, and at least they didn't call them Transformers. That deserves some credit!

Which Yamato Hikaru Ichijyo valkyrie should I buy? I only have money f

The 1/48s are not bad toys by any means. They are quite good, but the 1/60s have several refinements that put them just a few notches higher in my opinion. There are quite few collectors who believe that the size and extra little gimmicks of the 1/48s more than compensate for the updates that the 1/60s make. You sold a TV 1S for $120? That was a relative bargain. Some forum members are selling those for $200. Mandarake had one listed a while back for 15,000 yen. -
Macross Collectibles Market Watch - Current Auction/Store SOLD prices
SuperSenpai replied to jvmacross's topic in Toys
It also looks like an early release. Early release = tinted canopy, older-style crotch door, bad shoulders. Not worth as much IMO as the TV super VF combo pack. -
Big West and Yamato took advantage of the dudes in their 30s with disposable income for sure, which absolutely was a smart move on their part. But hasn't Macross been able to keep interest in the franchise alive by bringing younger fans into the fold as well? Macross Frontier seems to have been pretty popular in Japan. Didn't the soundtrack do pretty well? I don't know Japanese culture all that well, but to me those songs sound like they are aimed squarely at the Japanese equivalent of the Carly Ray Jepson demographic. But in any case I think we are in agreement that HG really dropped the ball, especially as the fanbase has the interest and money to spend.

The other benefit of Hasbro keeping these franchises going is that they kept getting an influx of newer/younger fans which is vital to a franchise's future. Look at the fanbase of TF or GI Joe -- sure they are a lot of adult fans, but plenty of kids are into them as well thanks to their continual output of toys, comics, and animation over the years. Robotech, on the other hand, is kept alive by a dwindling bunch of dudes in their 30's.

Congrats. I was actually going to bid on that one, but I lost track of time and forget to set my sniper. -
I never liked the way the chest and nosecone sculpt looked on the MPC VFs -- a little too broad relative to the rest of the body. However, the hip joint mod seems to help alleviate this by broadening the hips to be more in proportion with chest. Good work. Of course, this isn't making me rush out to buy an MPC valk anytime soon. I still see these things go on the secondary market for well over $100. I guess some people never got the memo.

Maybe Arcadia should hire you to pose for promotional pictures with their boxes so that they look tiny and MW forum members stop complaining about how much they're gonna have to pay in shipping charges.
-
The box might not be that big. Asians are kinda short after all. EDIT: Just so someone doesn't get all upset, let me clarify that I say this as a 5'7" person of Asian descent with 5'3" parents of Asian descent.
-
I think there's still money to be made from the less popular variants. Arcadia just needs to go about releasing them in an intelligent manner.

It may be true that many people like Mospeada/NG, and it may have even been the favorite segment of Robotech for many people, but the fact is that Robotech was largely driven by Macross. Macross was the least changed of the three animes, and it supplied the overall "skeleton" for the rest of the show. Macross was effectively the raison d'etre for Robotech, since HG added SC and Mospeada onto Macross in order to pad out the episode count, not the other way around. And Mospeada/NG fandom notwithstanding, when your average, casual fan thinks of Robotech, more often than not it's images of Macross that they associate with the name. Despite it's flaws and shortcomings, I still have a soft spot in my heart for Robotech. But that said, I'm of the opinion that whatever good was in Robotech was largely because it was based on a strong product -- the original Macross series. I think it's a bit much to heap praise upon Carl Macek's "grand vision", when most of the story changes were purely pragmatic. I just wish HG would stop taking credit for the strengths of Robotech that were largely due to the source material, not what they added.

So is it safe to say that if we get any further reissues, they will likely be of sculpts/paint variants that are known to be top sellers? The releases announced so far (Roy and Hik 1S and the YF-19) seem to support this. I guess that means mass production and Kakizaki variants are off the table. On the flip side, does that increase the likelihood of seeing reissues of Hik, Max, and Milia VF-1Js?

Plastik, is that an Expedit that you have your Detolfs standing on? Is it a 1x4 or 2x4 unit? How's the stability?

I saw those over at BBTS a few days ago. The product details lists the size as 15.95 x 8.00 x 11.40 inches. If that's height x length x width, that means the shelves are about the same size as a standard sheet of paper, and the height is a bit taller than the distance between shelves on a Detolf. It seems overpriced for the size and materials if you ask me. Detolfs cost around $60-$70 at retail, and this is more expensive while being less than 1/4 the size of a Detolf. Easy pass. EDIT: I was assuming the size listed was for the assembled product, not the package.

I would have loved to see a quality modern Legioss or more ride armor toys. But frankly, I'm just counting my blessings that we got anything after Gakken's releases. It's pretty amazing that we got any Mospeada merchandise at all past the 80's. From what I understand, Mospeada was not nearly as popular as Macross, and the lack of any follow-up anime (excepting Love Live Alive) seems to support this. Considering the popularity of Macross vs. Mospeada and the fact that we still call Macross a "niche" franchise (at least outside of Japan), I'm surprised that any company would be willing to take the risk to put out Mospeada toys. I'd liken it to some American company deciding to release modern versions of toys from defunct 80s cartoons like Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors or M.A.S.K.

Seriously! Who would ever buy multiple copies of the same toy painted in different colors?? That's the silliest thing I've ever heard of.

I kinda figured that HLJ's listing of "discontinued" had more to do with its own internal status of stocking the item rather than actual production from Bandai. The reason why I thought it was surprising was that it seemed like they basically filled the pre-orders and didn't order any more stock beyond that. Normally I would think that if a retailer wants to maximize its sales it would order enough units to fill all the pre-orders for the hardcore fans, and then order X number of additional units for people who come casually looking. Then again, I haven't followed the VF-25F re-issue all that closely, so maybe they did order extra and have already sold out. Or Bandai is just really stingy about making more than they can possibly sell.
-
Man, I'm not even really a fan of the YF-19 design, but that battroid looks pretty sweet.
-
Wow, HLJ is already listing the VF-25F as being "discontinued." http://www.hlj.com/product/BAN964807/Sci

The main difficulties I had with transformation were getting the transformed armor suit to peg into the holes on the figure's backside properly -- I don't think I got all of them in. Nonetheless, the thing seemed to hold together. I also used a transformation guide on YouTube in addition to the manual. Personally, I think all modern transforming toys should just send you a link to a video to show you how to transform the thing. Having transformed it once and back to cycle mode, I usually keep mine displayed in cycle mode. I have a Gakken ride armor toy that I keep displayed in armor mode since the figure for that toy can't really ride the bike in the cycle mode.

Can someone clarify for me -- is Mandarake an online retailer, an auction site, or both? Do you need a proxy to order from them? What charges are typically added on besides shipping? -
