Evolution Toy - VF-2SS Valkyrie I 《MACROSS II ~LOVERS AGAIN~
SuperSenpai replied to joppewo's topic in Toys
I did like this mecha in the anime, but the prototypes look underwhelming to me. Probably will pass on this. But knowing me, I'll probably end up looking at your pictures after you've got the toy in hand and will somehow get Jedi mind-tricked into thinking that it looks pretty good and end up buying it anyway. -
I've read in some interviews with Charlie Cox that they purposely made a lot of the fights this season look sorta sloppy. The idea is that Matt is just starting out, and while he's obviously had training, he's not that great of a fighter yet... but he's getting there. The in-story reason for the new costume is that after going out and repeatedly getting beaten up, he figures out that he's going to need more protection. Also, in the episodes I've watched so far, he doesn't have his billy club yet. I'm sure the addition of a weapon will even up the odds in his favor a little more. Personally, I think the fight choreography works for the tone of this show. They're obviously going for something realistic, and more rough around the edges. This Daredevil is not a polished, acrobatic martial artist.

The Yamato v2 is probably your best bet if you only want to have to buy one toy that will provide a pretty good representation in all three modes. If you want to be a real stickler about it, different toys or models might give you a better representation for a particular mode. The tricky thing about the VF-1 (and most of the other Macross valks) is the way proportions vary depending on what mode you're in -- like a longer nosecone makes fighter mode look better, but looks odd in battroid mode. I know the modeling guys really like the non-transformable Hasegawa kits because the sculpts are optimized to have the best proportions for each mode.

Basically -- the proportions that make it look great in fighter mode work against it in Battroid mode and vice versa.

The 1/48 Yamato VF-1 seems to retain its share of fans, despite the general consensus being that the 1/60 v2 is a superior toy. I had one 1/48 toy a while back that I ended up selling, but I can definitely see its appeal and I understand why people might like it over the 1/60 toys. Obviously, it's a bigger toy with more gimmicks, so if that's your thing the 1/48 is clearly the winner. And while I think the 1/60 v2 has a better Gerwalk mode, I think the 1/48 has slightly more appealing fighter mode proportions. Battroid is a toss-up -- I prefer the more chunky/boxy appearance of the 1/48 Battroid (I think that looks closer to what you see in the anime), but not the length of the nosecone or the tiny hands. I think the tipping point for me was that the 1/60 v2 is just more enjoyable to handle. The size makes it easier to handle without giving up a lot of "stage presence" so to speak, and it requires less display real estate. Also, when it comes to missiles and super/strike parts, the 1/48 is much more frustrating to deal with.

Just sell off all your doubles, triples, quadruples, and you'll probably free up enough box space to put up at least a couple of display cabinets to display the singles.

I think they might also be able to work in the plot element of aliens-in-human-form-start-to-become-susceptible-to-human-emotions. It was generic enough that all three series adapted into Robotech used it to some degree. It was also somewhat of a plot element of the Battlestar Galactica remake. Another route they could go is mining the Robotech novels for concepts that would help them steer clear of Macross. The novels envisioned Robotech/Protoculture as something that gave machines the appearance of having life. Thinking caps and self-healing machinery are elements that weren't used in Macross.

Ollie in the LoA costume actually makes him look more similar to the look he had in Mike Grell's Green Arrow -- a series that the creators have acknowledged as being one of the influences on the show.

You'll find that quite a few of us here came to Macross by way of Robotech, including myself. With a few exceptions, if you're from the U.S. that was pretty much the only way that you could have experienced it. As wmkjr pointed out, we have a Mospeada thread in the anime and sci-fi forum. You might be interested in some of the latest posts there, as there's been some discussion of Toynami's announcement that they were reissuing the MPC Alphas. In the Macross toy forum, there will occasionally be a thread discussing Robotech-branded products that are based on Macross, but other than that and a few threads here and there making fun of Harmony Gold's latest shenanigans, there usually isn't much in the way of Robotech-specific discussion. Also, if you want replacement hands for your MPC Alphas, one of our forum members has a shop of Shapeways where you can order some: http://www.shapeways.com/product/GSD89RUK4/reg-hands-closing?li=shop-results&optionId=41187734 http://www.shapeways.com/product/F4U7Z9D7M/leg-hand-trigger?li=shop-results&optionId=43830261

The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread
SuperSenpai replied to slaginpit's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
In all honestly, I'm getting this because I think it's about as good of a Megatron as we're going to get. Megatron is a tough design to do justice, and I can't really see Takara doing much better than this, in terms of being balanced between bot and alt modes. Apollyon's gun mode was obviously sacrificed in order to make bot mode look better (the handle of the gun looks too big and thick in my opinion), but it doesn't look terrible either, and most people are going to display him in bot mode anyway. An official MP Megatron v2 is still speculation at this point anyway, and who knows how long it will take to come out if it does. If it does come out, and it's better, I can always get that one. If not, I'm still set with a pretty good Megatron figure for my collection.- 9240 replies

Your most recent Macross or toy purchase! General thread.

Nice pics Saburo. I have one those on preorder. So any details on what the minor issues might be?? -
It was joke... "David's silhouette" sounded like "a silhouette of David" not "David's idea to use a silhouette of a valk".
-
Why do we have to use David's silhouette? Is his face copyrighted?

Arcadia 1/60 Perfect Transformation VF-0D for 2015
SuperSenpai replied to Dark_Ghost's topic in Toys
Hmm... I haven't handled my 1As in fighter mode in quite a while, so I can't recall about the head laser. I had some more time today to handle the toy and do a little transforming -- stopped at Gerwalk mode today. Some more observations: 1) Yikes, this toy is dangerous. I'm really not a fan of all the sharp bits, especially the tips of the rear stabilizer fins that fold over the legs. I was constantly poking myself while trying to get the thing into Gerwalk. 2) The joints on this toy were TIGHT. A little too tight if you ask me. There were a few times I was afraid I might break it while trying to get something to move. In fact, the Gerwalk joints were so tight that in most cases of trying to move them I ended up unseating the hips from their pets. 3) Amazing range of motion in the knees. You can really get some deep Gerwalk stances with these joints. Despite some of the issues, I am enjoying the toy so far. Glad I decided to get this one. -
Arcadia 1/60 Perfect Transformation VF-0D for 2015
SuperSenpai replied to Dark_Ghost's topic in Toys
My VF-0D from NY finally arrived today. When I got the shipping box, I did a double take because they sent it in the factory shipper, which indicates 2 valks per box (I only ordered 1), and thought maybe there was some kind of mistake and that they accidentally sent 2. But no, just one valk. I haven't had time to really play with it and transform it, but here are a few of my observations from inspecting and handling in fighter mode: 1) The color is pretty dark, a little darker than I would have liked. It's not a deal breaker by any means, but that slightly weathered-looking, lighter blue shade would have been perfect. 2) The toy looks a lot better seen in person vs. pictures. The 0D was not a design that I was a big fan of, and I warmed up to it a lot more from looking at pictures on this thread. But now actually having the toy in hand, I can say that it's a great looking bird. 3) There's a nice solid weight to the toy. It feels like a substantial toy. 4) Not the biggest fan of all the pointy bits, esp. the two smaller fins near the intakes where most people are likely to hold the toy. 5) Am I the only one who thinks the position of the front landing gear relative to the head laser is a bit weird? How is that supposed to work? 6) Love the detail on the pilot figures and cockpit. I'm glad I'm not the factory worker who has to paint those little tiny details on the figures. Overall, I'm actually really glad I broke down and got this. If it turns out that these new, Arcadia-designed valks are going to have very limited runs and no reissues, better to get in on it now if you're on the fence about it. As I see it, you can always sell it off later if it turns out that you don't like it, whereas it could be much harder to pick one up for a reasonable price if you decide you like it after they've sold out. As it was, this and the YF-19 were at the upper limit of what I'd pay for a single toy, so if not now then I'd probably never get one. Which would have been too bad as it turns out I actually really like this design. -
Having bought my first Yamato 1/60 v2 around 2012, it still boggles my mind that they were once available at such discounts.
-
That doesn't necessarily escape the copyright issues does it? I'm not an intellectual property expert, but I read stories in the news now and then about lawsuits occurring over creative works just over the fact that something resembles something else. If Sony asks Kawamori to design transforming fighter planes for Robotech, what are the chances that there will be at least some similarities to Macross designs?
