In defense of the costume designer, that's basically what almost all costume concept illustrations look like. The over-emphasize the pose and other such tricks. I doubt the actual actor him/herself will look anything like the illustration.

P.S.- Regarding your comment about how it's "All about the $$$", do you understand the entertainment industry? Sure, projects like Evangelion, Macross and Cowboy Bebop are a true labor of love for their creators, but do you think for a second the creators would've even bothered if they thought there was no profit to be made? To say that Evangelion is being made into a live-action movie simply because the Americans want $$$ is the same as admitting it was made in the first place because the Japanese want $$$. I'm willing to suspend judgment until more info is released. If it dies in pre-production, no skin off my back. But if it doesn't, I'll still give it a chance.

I wasn't trying to impress you with the WETA comment, I was merely pointing out a fact about the company for those who may not know what WETA has done in the past. No need to be smarmy about it.
-
Not just in Japan, but all over the world. There's some guy in Europe who makes the best Colonial Marines (from Aliens) equipment. Also most papercraft artists will allow their patterns and designs to be used for free.

A- Old news. B- The designs are being done By Weta, the company that did the designs for LOTR. So, you can't blame everything on the American Movie companies. Those New Zealanders will have to be held responsible too! Personally, I don't care about name changes and stuff like that. I'm willing to see what happens with the movie.

Colonel Sanders leads Robotech into 2004!
the white drew carey replied to ComicKaze's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Well, don't forget that George Sohn of Toynami used to be part of Toycom, the company that was originally going to produce the M+ toys in 2000 and HG told them they can't do that. Afterwards, George left Toycom and started Toynami. As he already had the desire to make the "perfect" valkyrie/veritech toy, I think it wasn't too hard for him and HG to come to an agreement. -
Link, straight from the MacrossWorld Main Page: http://member.nifty.ne.jp/tori/cutout/vf1/.../super/img2.jpg http://member.nifty.ne.jp/tori/cutout/vf1/.../super/img3.jpg http://member.nifty.ne.jp/tori/cutout/vf1/.../super/img4.jpg http://member.nifty.ne.jp/tori/cutout/vf1/.../super/img1.jpg I don't think it's technically origami since, IIRC, origami is specifically the decorative art of folding paper, whereas these are commonly known as papercraft, which uses folded, cut, glued and taped paper to make an object.

Robert Stack. -
Scratch that. I just went through the thread on the M&M's and Graham says these aren't what he was talking about, and that pics are still forthcoming on a different product.
-
Ahhh... but Graham's sig said we'd see pics, though.

Robotech and HG license debates
the white drew carey replied to Roy Focker's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
IIRC- Wasn't there a bit of brand new animation made by Tatsunoko at HG's request in order to tie in the movie with the RT series? Or am I thinking of something else? -

Part of my confusion lies with the TV series- Once Max and Millia pick up their VF-1J's, his number is 202 and her's is 303. -
Newbie Questions on Macross
the white drew carey replied to Roy Focker's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
It's a Dreamcast game, do yourself a favor and stay the hell away from it... Double ditto. Although it features some of the lesser known VF's, the game blows chunks. Sad, really... -

Ha! It doesn't belong in the nOOb thread because I am not a nOOb and this isn't a nOOb question. nOOb questions are usually readily answerable by the more dedicated fan, rather than the more casual fan. I find myself to be a more dedicated fan, yet cannot determine through sources available to me exactly how the numbering is done. -
OK, in Macross, does each sqaudron have it's own set of numbers. IE- The squadron commander is always 001? Or do the numbers keep going up and up and up, and Skull's commander is 001 because they're "the best"? The again, if it just goes numerically, what happens when they reach 999? This has been bugging me for a while, and I never thought to ask here, which is probably the best place for me to find an asnwer.

Well, that's not entirely fair. Maybe in the 80's and early-90's it was prudent to say "no" to Korean animation studios. But several notable projects have come out recently which shows that Korean studios are starting to release quality projects.

Who says that Animeigo had any right to consent. They worked on the footage it doen't mean they own it. HG does. Well, there would have to be some type of consent. If there were no provisions made in their original agreement that HG can use the remastered footage, then they cannot just come along afterwards and take it from AnimeIgo.

And, in turn, Tatsunoko parceled off much of the animation duties to the "lowest bidder*" in order to keep as much of the money as possible. At least, that's my opinion. *the lowest bidder being Animefriend, who probably produces sheap, yet crappy, work. IIRC- Studio Nue (or Artland) probably produced some of the best animation you'll see early in the series. Simply because they were the creators and wanted their baby to look as good as possible, although time constraints considerably dulled their attention to detail and quality later in the series. The next step down is Tatsunoko themselves. A more experienced company with skilled animators, yet lacking the heart and desire that drove Studio Nue. In the end, the simple inability of Tatsunoko's animators to correctly interpret Studio Nue's intent led to minor consistency errors, along with the expected continuity errors. Animefriend got tossed the rest of the animation, possibly after it was decided to re-lengthen the series to 36 episodes. Their quality was sub-par, and animation, proportion and simple artistic mistakes are readily evident. In the end, the original macross series is a frankenstein monster that has it's great, it's good and it's bad parts.

OT Computer Help problem
the white drew carey replied to robokochan's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
might as well buy all the robotech masterpiece collection whiel your at it. Hah! Whatever. In the twenty or so years I've had the privilege of using computers, I've always had issue with PC's, but always bought them because they are inherently cheaper. After my last PC crashed I finally broke down and actually bought a Mac. Over the past 1 1/2 years it hasn't crashed or screwed up once. Sure, I can't play as many games as before, but it blows any PC out of the water when it comes to graphics programs, which is what I really want. Different strokes for different blokes, but I prefer my computer to always run instead of the crap that PC's have put me through. I also don't care for Microsoft. I don't hate them as a corporation, as most people do, I just think they put out a very bug-laden, non-intuitive, crappy product... everytime they release something. -

Monkey-N... Get a Mac. -
A good place for Macross history would be either the Macross Compendium, Lebhead's Macross/Robotech comparison essays or (for a good dose of fun), the the infamous License Debate thread, which does touch upon the history and production of Macross... occasionally.
-
Long story short, three studios produced animation for Macross. Animefriend, a studio under the umbrella of Tatsunoko, was one of these studios and did a lot of the work. Animefriend sucks. Really, really bad. Although there are QC issues with all of the animation, most of it can be chalked up to simple oversight. But animefriend can't even keep correct proportions (or even attempt them) in a single shot, let alone consecutive frames.

ditto.

Dude! For a second I thought I was the only person in the world that liked Robot Carnival! No way, it's great!!! Obviously, some of the shorts are better than others... Katsuhiro Otomo's intro and outro is hilarious, as is A Tale of Two Robots ("The sun is setting, dimwit."). Cloud is a little too boring and artsy for me. But the others are all pretty cool, and the last one is just soooo whacked out!!! What's great about it is that you can throw it on in the background when guests are over (or at a party) and people will check it out if they want to, but don't have to put a lot of commitment into it because they are shorts.
