I just read some more info, it seems the unit is handicapped so that it can fall into the ultralight category under FAA regulations so that one does not need a pilot's license. Nice! Imagine what one could do if it was truly decked out, though?

I think I've seen photos of that before, but never video. It is pretty awesome. Is it really a jetpack, though? I thought it used ducted fans instead.

That was pretty neat. I like how they steal the lightbulb from the Pixar lamp.

BTW- I'm re-reading the series now (started in anticipation for ADWD, but we all know how that's been delayed again), and I must reiterate how much I love this series. However, I find myself a bit troubled by my reaction to the Red Wedding. Never before have I had such a visceral response to an event depicted in fiction, especially fantasy fiction. As with my first time through the series, I soooo want the whole Frey clan to pay for what they've done, and one of my primary expectations over the next three books is for that to happen. But, knowing GRRM and how everything doesn't always come up rosey, I wouldn't be surprised if they get let off the hook somehow. Argh! p.s.-if you can't tell, I just got past that part in ASOS.

Patlabor doesn't have tranformations, but the series as whole runs the gamut from outrageous humor to serious political thriller. Something to please everyone. If you've got the time, and your son is mature enough in his understanding, Ranma 1/2 is fun for the whole family, both the manga and anime. Too be honest, I haven't had a chance to watch much new stuff lately that isn't Macross. =(

I think the music in the trailer is only for the trailer. I did a search and it turns out the rock part is a Coheed and Cambria song. At first I thought the music was kind of out of place, but then I realized that it completely threw your expectations in the trailer. A pretty nifty marketing idea, methinks. According to IMDB, the gal who does original music for the film also did music for Hellboy I and II, X2, and George Lucas in Love. So I think we're safe for the theatrical musical score.

It appears to already be playing here in Lyn, France. Last night (the 8th for us) it was paying at 8:25pm and 10:25pm. Kind of like a midnight showing, but not?

True, methinks that it will be, well not "dumbed down" per se, but some of the structure and storylines may be adjusted. That being said, I see no reason why it can't keep the complexity. Those who crave good story telling will stick around (if it is good) and those who get confused will slip by the wayside. That is one thing, though, GRRM better pick up the pace, or else they're going to catch up to him before he finishes the last book.

HG and Robotech Debates
the white drew carey replied to Dangard Ace's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Not really. Money is just money. Its not as much about hating RT as it is hating HG. If people like RT, more power to them. But HG is a different beast. I'd feel fine getting everything out in the clear so that we can all go on our merry way. -
HG and Robotech Debates
the white drew carey replied to Dangard Ace's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Let's just put it this way: Macross rules, Robotech drools. One day I will win big in the lottery (I'm talking 20 million+), at which time I will contact BW and purchase a license to one of the unlicensed Macross projects and release it in the states. When HG comes knocking at my door with a C&D I will take them to court and make sure everything is public, just so we will all finally know exactly what is HG has rights to. -
Yeah, I've been keeping my eye on this for a bit. One thing I have to say, the trailers are both very well done, and are very exciting.

As some of you may or may not be aware, HBO is currently in the casting process for a pilot for A Game of Thrones, simply titled Game of Thrones. If the pilot goes well HBO will pick up the series. Based on the initial details leaked several years ago, each book will comprise of one season on TV. Here is the current known casting as verified by several sources, including GRRM himself: Sean Bean as Eddard Stark Jennifer Ehle as Catelyn Stark Richard Madden as Robb Stark Sophie Turner as Sansa Stark (not the Dr. Who Sophie Turner) Masie Williams as Arya Stark Kit Harrington as Jon Snow Alfie Allen as Theon Greyjoy Mark Addy as Robert Baretheon Lena Headey as Cersei Lannister Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Jaime Lannister Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister Jack Gleeson as Joffrey Baratheon Tamzin Merchant as Daenerys Targaryen Harry LLyod as Viserys Targaryen Iain Glenn as Jorah Mormont So far, a pretty good cast. I can't say that I imagined Eddard Stark looking like Sean Bean but, then again, Sean Bean is pretty awesome. And it will be great to see him play a good character. I was surprised about Lena Headey as Cersei. For one, I can't imagine her blonde, and I figured she's got the dramatic chops to play Catelyn, who has so much on her shoulders. Then again, maybe Lena Headey wanted the challenging role of Cersei. And, I must say, Peter Dinklage has always been my imaginary vision of Tyrion, not because he's ugly and malformed (makeup will have to do that), but the snarky quality he can bring to a character will be so well served in Tyrion that it is almost frightening! Casting should be wrapping up shortly, and filming is set to take place in the UK starting in October. Let us all hope for the best, and pray that an ASOIAF series can fill the void that BSG left behind! Other than that, no recent news regarding A Dance with Dragons. Initial hopes were that it would be released this month, but that obviously isn't happening. I kind of wish GRRM would stop putzing around with editing his Wilds Cards anthologies and just get back to ASOIAF!

Rambo V: The Savage Hunt
the white drew carey replied to VT 1010's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
and yes, by "first film" I mean First Blood, not Rambo: First Blood Part II. -
Rambo V: The Savage Hunt

Thank god I think of Rambo the same as Highlander, nothing exists after the first film because they are all frakking lame. This... is no exception. -
That's cool. I was more worried that others would misinterpret what you were stating and wanted to clarify, not that you were uninformed yourself.

This statement itself is on legal shaky ground. There is a lot of legal mumbo jumbo behind when an owner loses their rights for not protecting them, and it isn't that simple. Remember when Tommy Yune, speaking for HG at SDCC in 2002, "admitted" that MacII and Mac+ slipped by them in the 90s because no one was minding the store at the time. In HG's quasi-legal explanation, they claimed that this was why they haven't been able to do anything to stop those specific products from being sold to this day. However, copyright law allows that an IP holder cannot always know when they are being infringed upon, and that the time frame for protecting their product takes into account when they first become aware of the infringement. HG's statement was BS, though, as they were actively licensing RT at the time in the form of comics and the Robotech: Crystal Dreams game for N64. Its clear the real reason they didn't do squat about MacII and Mac+ as because they knew that A) they didn't have any legal recourse beyond the Macross TV series, and B) the story about not minding the store was utter crap and they would be called on it if they actually tried to use that as a legal defense. Even when HG blocked the Toycom Mac+ VF toys, it wasn't a "legal victory" at all. Whatshisname from Toycom just bent over, let HG give it to him in the rear, and birthed the bastard child Toynami to plague us with crappy (and expensive) knockoffs of toys that were already available in Japan.

HG and Robotech Debates
the white drew carey replied to Dangard Ace's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
Someone mentioned above that its a trailer and not in-game footage. I just want to clarify that it is in-game footage, or at least they say it is. On the bottom left of the screen it states so (at least in the cockpit view). THat being said, all external views are probably theatrical in nature. However, it is a redesign of the Warhammer, and possibly enough so to get by. -
Does anyone else find it amusing that, as far as we know, HG has sent a C&D letter to a website which is running the trailer for the game, and not the developers themselves who are making it? It sounds like the typical HG bluster and blather to try to make themselves relevant.

Rate this transforming robot...
the white drew carey replied to akt_m's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I like how you were able to accomplish a true transformation but, aesthetically, I'm not fond of the over-boxiness and angular design of the mecha in either mode. It's especially goofy in fighter mode because you have this curved, sweeping nose, and then a bunch of boxes for components in the fuselage. Albeit, still much better than I've ever done! -

I know everyone is allowed their own opinion but still, yours is wrong. Besides how does replacing Heinlein's political/military commentary with Verhoeven's political/military commentary* work any better? Whereas Heinlein thought out his military tactics, Verhoeven uses the retarded "everyone run up and shoot" idea that ignorant Hollywood directors have been using for ages. Michael Ironside: "Oh, Rico used his awesome football skills to kill the big bug... awesome to the extreme!!!" That movie is crap with two P's. The only redeeming quality was the neat SFX (for the time) and Gary Busey's son. *besides- all of Verhoeven's "tongue-in-cheek" commentary is just a rehash of his stuff in Robocop. Nothing new. -
The lightbike looks cool, and we haven't seen it in it's final lighting which, hopefully, will retain the feel of the originals. I'm not keen on the chrome parts or greeblies on the back.
