Macross 25th Anniversary! New TV series coming!
DestroidDefender replied to wolfx's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
As long as it's not rap. If it's rap I'll dig a big hole in the back yard and bury every piece of Macross merchandise I own.... -
Guitar Hero - What platform?
DestroidDefender replied to DestroidDefender's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
What I've been reading about the PS3 makes it pretty appealing - HiDef games and after the last update, it up-converts dvds to HiDef when it plays them. Does GH2 play on a PS2? I thought it was PS3 and X360 only. -
Macross 25th Anniversary! New TV series coming!

Sounds like they are giving it a big marketing push. I hope it doesn't disappoint. Just keep SK designing mecha and well away from the story meetings! -
I currently have no gaming consoles but I'm quite keen to try Guitar Hero. Anyone tried GH I or II on the different machines? I guess the choices are PS2, PS3 and X360. I've heard some good things about the PS3, but PS2's are pretty cheap now. I'm leaning towards GH1 on a PS2.

I'm not going to rag on Robotech. If not for Robotech most of us might never have seen Macross. I'm sort of coming around on Macross 7 but I wouldn't say it's a better or more imaginative continuation than Master & New Generation. I can't defend HG's embargo of Macross product from Japan but too many people have enjoyed Robotech for me to tell them it sucks.

I'm so desperate for new Macross I'm trying to watch Macross 7 again. Surprisingly I'm not hating it. I do have a few observations: The main story is moving very slowly. I can see why I gave up the last few times. It uses an inter-cutting editing style that's a gets a bit tiresome and hard to follow. It changes back and forth between parallel scenes in the middle of the action - usually with the music blaring in the background. The character animation is often quite good. The mecha animation is wooden, repetitive and generally not good. Any shots besides the reused Valkyries are usually framed to tight and move so quickly you can't tell what they are showing you. But actually I'm kind of digging it. I don't actually think I can blame Macross 7 for "ruining" my Macross. I think the the whole music/spiritua thing starts in DYRL. For me thats where things start to go off the rails. No sense blaming Macross 7.

I think it was in one of the two SDF Macross Art Portfolios I'll check when I can get my hands on it.

Newbie Questions on Macross
DestroidDefender replied to Roy Focker's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
1. I don't recall ever seeing a vf use them, but they would have to in the rear in fighter mode, either in the legs, backpack or the roots of the vertical stabilizers 2. Chaff in modern aircraft terms is an exploding bundle of 100s of strips of reflective tin foil-like ribbons. It supposedly confuses enemy radar guidance. What the equivalent in Overtech would be I don't know. I don't think Overtech mecha use conventional radar for targeting. Chaff -
Thanks for the info. I'll backup my Animeigo originals and play those when I want to watch them.
-
Can someone who has the both the Animeigo and HG set compare them to see if the disks themselves are the same - ie the labeling and actual disc appear to be the same. If the HGs are actually a newer run I might buy the HG set as a backup. If they are the same there would be no point would there?
-
Except I get an a server error every time I try and checkout. Anyone else having problems?
-
It was probably just an assumption of my part. If the Supervision Army were not supervising the Zentraedi then who were supposed to be "supervising"? The Protodevlin's subjugated planets?
-
Wait - so the PD are the actual Supervision Army that the Zentraedi are fighting? I thought the SA were the like the PC's military police, the force that were supposed to keep the Zentraedi in line. I haven't seen all of Mac7 but I have to ask is that explicitly stated in the show? It smells like an off-camera "retcon" to me. We've been having an interesting discussion about MacII with lots of people citing "the Compendium". Many of the "facts" from the compendium don't seem to have any basis in the story as seen on screen.

Macross II Why not Canon?
DestroidDefender replied to DestroidDefender's topic in Movies and TV Series
If you look at just Mac II and Mac+ as seen on screen, and discount other secondary sources, I'm satisfied that MacII could have been fit into the canon Macross timeline if the producers had wanted it. Most of the alleged contradictions are pretty subjective and based mainly on outside sources. Negative arguments are just plain silly. We didn't see the MacZero 'Flying Rocks' in any other series and it's chronologically first - does that make SDF, Mac+ and Mac7 non-canon? A lot can change in 70 years - landscapes, city plans, the importance of cloning and emigration. If you've got a million+ Zentraedi ships I say use them in your fleet, build arcologies out of them, etc. It's non-canon, but I never could see why. I'm 100% sure now it's just spite and there is no real reason it could not have been part of the timeline.- 313 replies

Macross 25th Anniversary! New TV series coming!
DestroidDefender replied to wolfx's topic in Hall Of The Super Topics
NO. You "Imagine in the new series a music band like Culture Club or Erasure." I'll wait and see what happens. -
Ral Partha - yes some of the old Ral Partha Battletech could be used as recoverted to Macross. I have considered this but they are noticeably smaller than 1/200 and you can sell them to Battletech players for big bucks on ebay. Dark Horse - DH did a line for the Robotech RPG in 1/200. The only mecha they did that wasn't also in plastic was the Spartan. Gashapon - Macross vending machine capsule toys from Japan. There have been several series reiterating all the Valkyries and the common destroids. Finally a Q-Rau was released. Unfortunately they did the Regult as 1 figure with 3 variants (missles: heavy, light, none) so instead of being common and easy to get it's three times as dear. I'd really like to get 20 or more for wargaming. Alas I'm probably going to have to recast to get that many. There is a smallish plastic Spartan that was available as a Robotech/Exoforce toy its bigger than 1/200 - about 3" IIRC

Macross II Why not Canon?
DestroidDefender replied to DestroidDefender's topic in Movies and TV Series
If I understand you guys, using the various secondary sources a case can be made to invalidate MacII. You guys seem to know those sources much better than I, and I admit it's a awhile since I watched either series. And I admit I only watched the first 20 episodes of Mac7 - so basically I learned nothing about the PD or the PC. Based on what we actually hear in SDF about the PC, the Zentraedi, etc. - not stuff from other sources, just the things we know from the tv series - I don't think the Marduk, the Emulators, Alus, etc. run contrary to the spirit of SDF. Emigration and cloning are not mentioned in MacII but that does not mean it didn't happen. Now I don't see anything that happens in Mac+ that makes the events 80 years later in MacII impossible. Heck the shoot'em up finale in Mac+ could explain why the city was rebuilt and the Macross was moved in MacII. I think there was room for both storylines in the canon. It was simply a case of indifference mainly on the part of SK. He wanted to make his test pilots story and was cajoled into making it a Macross story. I'm not going to change the producers minds - MacII is out and forgotten. But I don't think it had to be. Personally, I find it feels more like "my" Macross than Mac7 and some parts of Mac+.- 313 replies

There was a 1/200 Phalanx in plastic? The only one I've seen was in lead! Seriously everything mecha sized from SDF has been in 1/200 from Nichimo in plastic, Dark Horse in Lead, or a gashapon, except the Nousjadeul-Ger!

Check here for the definitive Koenig Monster Lego Monster Then go up one level and look at the guys other mecha including a Zaku and and AV-98 Ingram

Macross II Why not Canon?
DestroidDefender replied to DestroidDefender's topic in Movies and TV Series
Then that's another "continuity conflict" we can discount. The SDF-1 survives Mac+ to be 90% destroyed in MacII. No problem. So really there are no big continuity reasons MacII has to be considered non-canon - it's jst that SK doesn't like it and doesn't want to be obliged to follow it.- 313 replies

You can invade us anytime MechaTech. I'd love to see the Daedalus in action but I think I'm on the wrong coast. I'd be happy to donate a Destroid to crew it when it's finished. I really like the idea of posing them on the deck with magnets!

Macross II Why not Canon?
DestroidDefender replied to DestroidDefender's topic in Movies and TV Series
Thank you all for your input. I think most of what has been said supports my opinion that there is nothing much wrong with MacII - nothing that doesn't also impact other Macross series (truncated stories line, episodes with poor animation, etc.). It just represents a "road not taken" in future productions. I suppose MacII could have made some mention of the emigration movement but it wasn't really important to MacII's Earth centered story. And like most I was disappointed by the abrupt ending and the destruction of the SDF - but I could say the same thing about Mac+. And I still don't understand Mac0. Anyway here's looking forward to the new project. My forlorn hope is that it will emphasize mecha action, use music in moderation and have minimal references to "spiritua". My "not a chance in hell" hope is that its set during or after SW1 and features Destroids. But I can hope.- 313 replies

Macross II Why not Canon?
DestroidDefender replied to DestroidDefender's topic in Movies and TV Series
Firstly I'm not talking about Star Wars. I stated upfront that creator involvement was not what I was talking about. I see a lot of corporate/artistic quality/petty spite explanations. I didn't state my question properly. I don't want to why MacII is not canon. I want to know the alleged continuity problems in the MacII story that are used to justify it's non-canonic status. Valkyrie numbering? Not important "New" songs appearing in chronologically earlier Mac Plus? That would be a continuity problem in Mac Plus not Mac II. Really, I don't find the Marduk in MacII any harder to swallow than the Protodevlin in Mac7. What is it that makes Mac II unacceptable?- 313 replies

I keep hearing the Mac II is not canon. I'd like to know why but first I'll state my position: I don't accept SK's non-involvement as justification for it's non-canon status. Dislike of characters plot etc. also doesn't disqualify it. The model number of Valkyries doesn't do it for me either. F-101s served in the air force long before F-16s. What exactly about Mac-II makes it "impossible" for the story to be part of the canon along with Mac+ and Mac7?
