Haha, during lunch today, I happen to browse thru the Chobits:- YOUR EYES ONLY in a book store... I must say, you're right valkyrietestpilot! AngelValk now kind of reminds me of Chii. Hmm, maybe it's the pose and facial expression. Must go back and buy that book - it has REALLY beautiful illustrations of Chii. Best of luck EXO!

Persocon?! I think valkyrietestpilot is just joking there. But er, what is it about AngelValk that made you guys mention Persocon? I am a fan of Chobits though. The interactive drop shadow coloring is only used for AngelValk and your Low-Vis Valkgirl so far. Edit:- Sorry bake_art, I didn't quite understand your question just now... just realised you only wanted know where and when to put highlight, midtone, and shadow - when you color. That's too broad a subject don't you think? Komilia Jenius was colored with a more straightforward method, kind of like how the Love Hina characters are colored - that's why her highlight, midtone, and shadow are solid and clearly defined. As far as the Komilia piece that I did is concerned, like the AngelValk, she's also drawn with 'Draw. I simply chose a solid midtone then added a shadow color and lastly the white highlight. The white highlight is then, soften with the "interactive transparency tool", so some parts of the white can merge nicely with the midtone. But you MUST remember... That Komilia piece was originally illustrated by Mikimoto for a Macross game. All I did was "remaster" the picture (as the original picture was in very low resolution) and I also added her arms, lower torso and legs. Besides, the original Mikimoto piece was in color, so color application for me as far as highlight, midtone, and shadow are concerned, is a no-brainer. Now, if you want to master coloring irregardless of media, you gotta get to it thru trial and error. And with lots of practice, experimentation and lighting on flesh references. I'm sure you know, every media's method of color application differs from one to another.

I did state CorelDRAW 9 throughout the pages... And I thought you're reading my tutorials <_< Still, you've nothing to worry about Painter though, I know it's a very good software... I'm starting to learn it at the moment. Also, you'd probably find more Painter tutorials for anime art out there, than something as obscure as CorelDRAW. Again, keep up the good work Yohsho.

Yay! My suggestion made the first place. Okay... omganimetoys. Assuming you're not in a place like Hong Kong, I suppose that's the kind of feeling most anime fans get when they see an anime toy shop in their area. OH MY GOD! They have Macross stuff or something... so there you go. In case you don't know, omg is short Oh my God! It short and sweet and it reflects the general feeling of anime fans the world over, and their reaction toward their beloved anime stuff. The name is timely and it suits well imo, until of course, corporations like Jusco start peddling anime stuff worldwide at killer pricing.

Oh yeah, If you guys are interected in picking up CorelDRAW, this is THE book you all MUST get. There are no anime artworks though, but you can learn all there is to know about inking, coloring... virtually everything from A-Z about 'Draw. But they don't teach you the alternative use for the drop shadow for flesh coloring in that book though, I stumbled upon that technique myself. Behold!

Hey Yohsho, thanks for looking at the tutorial. But the software I used is CorelDRAW 9 not Painter - although they are both from Corel. Just wanted to remind you in case you're also looking into buying the actual software. These thing are expensive and mistakes can be costly! Fanworks is quite busy these days, it's GOOD! Keep drawing.

Don't say that bake_art. Your drawing skill is consistently good as it is. Just imagine how much better you'd be with coloring skills like that - It's only a matter of time one can easily attain technical skills. Myself on the other hand, can only wish I can draw raw pencil sketches as good as you cuz yours is a natural talent. Natural talents are harder to attain and hone.

Ah yes! I remember that side standing view of Minmay, you drew back in the old boards. Just didn't know you're a Corel user yourself back then - I'm happy I've found a 'Draw brother. I also remember Granbeetle san uses 'Draw too. Great stuff akt_m hope to see more of your work. V7 and UN Spacy, Horny buggers! Thanks alot for looking.

Glad to know you find the alternative use for the "interactive drop shadow" helpful akt_m Are you a CorelDRAW user by any chance? Hm, very quiet thread. Must be a busy weekend for all. I would appreciate it, if anyone can share their tips as well.

Hey guys, it's ready. Please go here. Good job on MAXL Kai Chick. I really like the color combination you used.

I don't consider myself good enough to teach... So I just want to share my ideas. Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Page 7 Hope the little tips are useful my friends. I know my explanations are not perfect, so please let me know if I’ve left out anything. As I’ve tried my best to include every important technique I’ve used for making the AngelValk, there are certain micro-steps that I’ve left out. These micro-steps are very obvious if you can play with the software hands-on in person. Other than that, I think my techniques are no different from other artists using different 2D software – If you were to look at the big picture. Not from the steps I show. So if you have time, please share some feedbacks and critiques. Thanks!

Highlights for both flesh and hard surface will be covered as well.

Haha! Just doing my part as a 'Draw salesman. But I ain't charging anything for this. I need a couple of days cuz there are lots of portion on the Angel Valk to dissect. I will also try to squeeze all the coloring tips in together with all the CorelDRAW feature names. Hope I can simplify the 'DRAW jargons too. Till then, have a great weekend fellas!

Thanks, I'm working on it now. Will try to submit in a couple of days.

Sweet work! Just in time for the Valkgirls' special celebration. Looking forward to more of your CG Valkgirl.

If that doesn't make me an Eva fan, nothing will! Now all I need are both Rei and Asuka on my table, so I can stare at them looking back at me!
-
Sweet pix! Thanks! The peg of the green plastic looks kind of odd though. He reminds me of Cyclops.

As a working parent myself, if anything should go to the watchdog list, it's the Purple Dinosaur!!! I loose many nights of sleep trying to rid the songs from my head, everytime I pick my son up from school and I have ultra violent ideas I'd like to try on my colleagues in the client-servicing team in the morning. I'll NEVER buy Barney stuff for my son. -
Hey I've been meaning to do a step by step tutorial, kind of a how I draw 'em thingee... Although I'm not sure how it would benefit you guys - since not many of you use CorelDRAW here... maybe you can lift some ideas off the steps, and you can use the methods in the softwares that you use! Interested? It will take a few days for me to put complete my day job assignments and dissect my Angel valk to make the tutorial. Let me know!

If Yamato is working on these, then I am officially staying in HK until I get mine! Me too! Yeah, I voted that too cuz I want the J type Max.
