Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
bsu legato replied to Max Jenius's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Hopefully, KOTOR marks the beginning of a return to greatness (or even goodness) for SW games. Too many mediocre games over the past few years have made the Star Wars name a joke. -
I see your point. When I play DoD, I usually have one or two of my buddies there with me at the Cyber Cafe, so I guess I'm getting the best of both worlds. And by the way, DoD has a microphone system built in (Roger Wilco, I believe). It's great for telling the n00bs to "Cover the g*damn right flank!!" I guess the best game would not only offer LAn and online multiplayer, but would take a lesson from Realtime Strategy games and have different sized maps tailored to the number of players. Large maps for 32-64 players, smaller more intimate maps for 3 or 4 players to frag each other on.

I'm with Graham. Online massive multiplayer shooters and FPS games suck. I have to disagree with you here. 5 years ago, my friends and I used to play Half Life extremely hardcore. I'm talking about weekend long LAN games that would run until sunrise, then we'd take a break for brunch and catch a few hours of sleep until we went back at it. But nowadays, due to conflicting job schedules, families and old age, we can't have those massive frag-fests anymore. Furthermore, my interest in pure "deathmatch" games has seriously diminished. To me, that's where online gameplay comes in. Today, one or two of my old gaming buddies and I play Day of Defeat. Not as hardcore as the old Goldeneye/Half Life days, but we play pretty seriously. Since I lost interest in deathmatches, team-based play is what I crave and only online games offer that. I want to capture the flag, defend objectives and blow stuff up, all while killing the other team. Even if I still played in those old LAN parties, 4 on 4 on a DoD map is just assinine. If you're concerned about cheaters, TK'ers and mouthy l337 kiddies (and I do agree that they are a serious problem) then you really need to find a good server. A good server will have a strong admin presence, who should kick/ban the undersirables posthaste. Believe it or not, there is good teamwork out there online. You just need to find it.

For a change, it looks like they're using the actual blasters from the films. The Reb pictured here is carrying the correct Hoth/Endor rifle, and he's decked out in the proper uniform to boot.

Wait...this implies that there actually is a date for HL2. Just yesterday I went searching for HL2 info, and all that's come out of Valve on the break-in and the release date has been a big, stony silence. <_< And I agree with you about "arcady" FPS games. Give me a realistic tac-sim FPS in the Galaxy Far, Far Away and I'll die happy.

Well, I'll wait until they announce some more details before I pass judgement on Battlefront. So far, all we know is that it's 1) available for PS2, X-Box and PC 2) the PS2 version supports 8 players 3) features the Empire and Repulbic periods It could very well suck in all likelyhood, but since I like the game's concept I'll give it a fair chance. However, I don't think that games like this will really come into their own until own until they start making games with the "next gen" engines like Half Life 2.

Pfft...Jedi. Your feeble skills are no match for the power of my AT-AT.

I wholeheartedly agree with that. Today, I learned that the PC version of Secret Weapons Over Normandy has no multiplayer! None! Not even the "versus" mode, carried over from the PS2! That moved it down a notch to the "rent it for PS" category. <_<

Of what..? The fact that some dumb sap doesn't know what a 1/48 Yammie retails for? I own a 1/48, complete with FAST Packs, and if I'd wanted to I could have bought a Low Viz too. And I can tell you for a fact that I would have gotten it for much cheaper! In today's online market, there's no more excuse for uninformed consumers.
-
Well to be fair, not many companies can afford to invest the time and money into building thier own game engines anymore. It's far cheaper to license an "off the shelf" engine like Quake and work from there. You get that from 3 screenshots, all from the same level? Oh to have eyes as keen as yours... Sounds more like the "real" BF1942. I still can't understand the hype over that buggy, laggy game. Nearly 3 years later, this game had better be an improvement. Again with the hate for the PS? Nowhere in the article does it say that it's a PS2-derived game. But if the PC graphics are only on par with the PS2, or even the X-Box versions, then forget it. Ditto the number of players it'll support. With today's games supporting up to 64 players, 4-on-4 just isn't going to cut it anymore.

I don't know if that would be possible for the Special Editions. In addition to the obvious new scenes, there were so many little tweaks to both the audio and video of the OT:SE that you'd essentially have two movies on one disc.

LucasArts has announced thier latest SW game, Star Wars: Battlefront. It's your basic Battlefield 1942 gameplay, thrown into the Star Wars universe. While it will be available for PS2 and the X-Box, for me the PC version will make or break this game. Who would want to play 5 vs 5 on the X-Box when you could be on a server with up to 64 players (or more...?) There's some very early screenshots from the PS2 version floating around, but it's far too early to tell what kind of detail we can expect. No release date, besides "2004," has been given. Edit: here's the screenshots: http://www.playstationmagazine.com/article...,1400903,00.asp

It seems that some people have more money than brains. <_

We'll see. Theforce.net recently ran that bogus "Changes to the OT" story that's been circualting for over a year. Also, I've also seen the term "Classic Trilogy" used as a dig at the PT, usually implying how much better the OT is than the non-classic prequels.
-
More than likely, they'll be the Special Editions.

In light of episode 3 of Zero hitting the net, I thought I'd bump this most excellent thread. Does anybody have a revised or new theory on this?
-
By the way, theforce.net reports that in Canada, Teletoon will begin airing the Clone War shorts this January. Of course, most of us will have already downloaded them by that time, but it's nice of them to try.

A Soul Calibur anime could potentially be interesting. But as Areaseven's many, many "Bad Anime Reviews" have shown, anime based on videogames can be just as bad as their Hollywood counterparts.
-
Hollywood really needs to lay off the comic book and video game movies. <_

Just as long as I get the DVD's unedited, they can cut out everything but the credits. -

Do you guys remember when wrestling used to at least pretend that there was some process for determining who the number one contender for the title was? Nowadays, it's just a given that HHH will automatically get title shot after title shot after title shot. -

Great stuff, Yoshi.

What's wrong with the Leopard 2? It's as modern an AFV as any other NATO tank. Besides, there's worse things for a nation to arm themselves with. Canada still has it's inventory of antique Leopard 1 tanks. <_< As for turretless tanks, the WW2 Stug, along with the German tank hunters, definitely had their drawbacks. For example, they were difficult to use in a defensive position, as the entire tank had to be turned to track a target.
