In anticipation of KILL BILL Volume 1 & 2.
bsu legato replied to UN Spacy's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Well I just rewatched Vol 1 last night, and I'd say I have to give it an "OK." The problem I have with it is that Tarantino is TOO sucessful at aping all his favorite chopsockey/grindhouse/kunk-fusploitation flicks, but Kill Bill does little to actually rise above them. It's in no way better than any of them. Even if you're a die hard fan of these films, you'd be hard pressed to argue that any of them are truly great films. But because Kill Bill has Tarantino's name attached to it, we're told it's like the Second Coming. To put in a different light, if I were to direct an "action/revenge" spectacle, it would likely be drawn from the movies I grew up with. Films like Commando, Raw Deal, Rambo: First Blood 2, and the like. Movies that we've all seen, and are still a guilty pleasure for some of us, but none of them are what I'd call great films. Now if I make my movie (Lets call it "Raw Bloody Commando: The Revenge") and it does nothing to elevate itself above the old 80's action films, should it be called a great film just because my name is attached to it? I don't think so. Taken for what it is (without the media hype) Kill Bill Vol. 1 is an adequate revenge/action film. However, it is NOT Tarantino's best. film. evar. -
Heh. I'm not trying to piss on Ennis' work on Punisher, but to me the early Grant days defined the character. I can sum it up in four words. Return. To. Big. Nothing. Remember, prior to the original limited series, the Punisher was just a boob who showed up in Spider Man (with a peculiar habit of calling everybody 'friend'). Inevitably he'd want to kill somebody, and Spidey would swing in and show him that his target was in fact innocent or at least worth handing over to the police. Grant changed changed all of that with the limited series. Although he wasn't the first to apply it to the character, Grant's use of Castle's narration gave the Punisher his depth. And as awesome as that original limited series was, Return to Big Nothing was x10 as good. All the major writers who followed, such as Baron, Potts, Dixon and even Ennis, all of them have only built on the huge foundation that Grant originally laid down.

Feh. Steven Grant > Garth Ennis

It got a half-decent review on CHUD.com, one of the few movie sites I trust. http://www.chud.com/reviews/pun.php3 On the other hand, it's also being eviscerated over on AICN, but I'm sure that's more to do with Harry promoting his buddy Tarantino.

Macross DYRL Super Poseables Set 1 Revised
bsu legato replied to VALKYRIE-EXCHANGE.COM's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I agree it was likely due to a lack of interest. It was asking a bit too much to expect consumers to buy yet another iteration of these mediocre toys, particularly the Roy VF-1S which by all accounts would be identical the "Robotech" branded toy. -
To be fair, that just indicates that VT-102 was a trainer. Can we really class every VF-1D as a trainer based on that one example?

More HGUC goodness for Gundam 0080

You're right. I was thinking of that Master Grade "Space Use" GM Kai. The new HGUC Zeta was a stinker? What was wrong with it? I was planning on getting one, and using my old HG kit for scap. -
'Nother update on IGN. We get a rundown of the Rebel player classes, and a couple of developer diaries. http://pc.ign.com/articles/506/506569p1.html?fromint=1

More HGUC goodness for Gundam 0080

This is probably the single longest run of HGUC kits from a single Gundam show. But since its 0080, I'm not going to complain. -

No, we still need the space-use GM Command, and the GM Sniper II, in addition to the Zaku II FZ and Kampfer. Wasn't there already a space-use GM for the 0080 lineup? You do have me on the GM Sniper, though. I hang my head in shame for forgetting that one. -

I had to reread that twice before I caught the difference between discs 1 and 2 of the "SE" version. As dejr8bud said, no DTS = no SE for me. -

Which, the old school One Year War version? The Gelgoog Marine isn't too drastically retconned from that version, is it? Still, its a worthwhile question. Look how long it took until Bandai made us a true 0079 Zaku II. -
Remember when they had that "Smores" cereal? That was cool.

Awesome work as always, Doctor G! Your Battroid looks just like the one on the Hasegawa box art.

Just to update anybody still following this ( there ARE still fans of 0080, right?) here's the final pics of the Gelgoog J, courtesy HLJ. Better still, they've announced the GM Command and Alex NT-1 for the HGUC lineup. All that's left is the Kampfer and Zaku FZ. -
Not to sidetrack my own thread, but didn't the decision to purchase the Mk 23 at least partially stem from the first Gulf War? They realized that there was indeed a place for a .45 sidearm, and having obsoleced the 1911 ( bringing them back would be tantamount to aditting they were wrong) they turned to HK for a *new* .45. Any merit to this, or am I just repeating old e-rumors?

Kawamori's "Air Cavalry Chronicals" mecha
bsu legato replied to Phyrox's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
So THAT's where those designs are from. I've been scratching my head trying to figure that out ever since I got my copy of the SK Macross Design Works. Neat mecha, but I don't really think they're Macross. It would have been great to see them animated, though. -
My point exactly! I enjoyed the first game's emphasis on stealth, and a well implemented camoflage would only add to that gameplay. However, since the standard MGS interface allows you to equip and unequip your entire inventory at the push of a button (also freezing the game until you finish) really takes away from it, IMHO. Where's the suspense when all of your different camo is just a click away? Not likely, since the game takes place during the 1960's. But you never know...

You just remember that while you're knee deep in Solid Snake's magical dress-up adventure. And don't forget your facepaint.

New trailer.... http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/i_robot/video_small.html ...looks just as bad.

Read their preview HERE. I don't even remember when this kit was first announced anymore, but I'm glad that the wait is finally....FINALLY over. The only down side is that I'll have to replicate that chipped paint scheme once again. Boba's Slave 1 nearly drove me insane, the last time I tried it.

If somebody was honestly, truly worshipping SK as some sort of deity and was spreading their "gospel" here on MW, then there would indeed be a breach of the rules. However, AFIK everybody understands the "Froating Head" bit to be a joke. If people are going to be that thin-skinned about such trivial things on the internet, then I suggest they stay home, bolt the doors and board up the windows. Otherwise, butch up and laugh it off. If the 'joke" is not to ones liking, then simply don't click on that topic.
