Cheap F-18 in stock: http://hlj.com/product/HSGD10/Air (but the gear is molded in dark blue--harder to paint a light color). Just as cheap and molded in grey: http://hlj.com/product/HSGD8/Air Out of stock, but I bet they can get it in MUCH quicker than they say---that is a perennial kit that is constantly re-issued. Or just check a local hobby shop---every 1/72 Hasegawa F-18 will have the same landing gear, the only reason some cost $10 and some cost $40, are the decals. Buy whatever one's on clearance/sale. For people in the US---check Hobby Lobby and Michael's---with their perpetual 40-50% off a single item coupons, you may be able to snag a Revell F-18 REALLY cheap. And the gear will be just as good. If you're lucky, you may find an Academy F-18.

Hmmmmn. Proto-Flanker: Note main gear doors/airbrakes. -
Minor update---I don't plan to paint very much (would defeat the point!) but I greatly disagreed with their cockpit colors (it was fine for an F-15...) So, bits before painting: (quarter for scale) and after: (some parts were painted "on the other side"---but I'm not going to reposition all the parts that fell over while photographing) This is 1/144, with a closed canopy (that's not especially clear). So I'm not too concerned about painting nicely. I just don't want "black and grey" where it should be blueish. (modern Flankers are not "Soviet cockpit blue-green" inside, they are blue-grey---I read that RLM 76 is close, and it looked about right, so that's what I used)

The toon model seems more YUH-61 than anything. But the toy and toon are very different.- 9360 replies

I think I had my -25 sets for nearly two years before I got my -25 to put them on! Saved a lot of money in the end though.

I want one mainly to have a working model of a cascade-style reverser. -
The same company that showed this when asking for VF-0D preorders? I'd have been ok with the minimal markings if it had actually released in "slate blue with pale grey undersides". But that pic's not even close to what we actually got.

Do they deal with being applied to matte surfaces better than traditional water slides? This kit's sheet says printed in China---not a good sign in my decaling experience.

Tiny pegs or clips on the edge, would be far less noticeable than half the coat of arms missing like it is now.

Seconded. Never heard of ASU DECA.

YF-23 gear is even better I think, but much harder to find. (I remember when those kits were cheap and everywhere) Also, if you don't need metal, you can buy a whole Hasegawa F-18 kit for less than the metal gear costs.

Ok, so they made a hinge for the left half of the tailfin/shield, and a second set of hinges for the right half?!? One single hinge down the middle would have looked a lot better, than the zig-zag they have now. Seriously, I've seen much smaller hinges doing the exact same thing, on other transforming figures etc. Why'd Bandai do the worst-looking possible solution? "Splitting in half down the middle" isn't some complicated new thing they have to figure out, I expect better.

This goes for both posts! There's no modex number printed on, but there's a small sheet of waterslides. All other markings are printed.

I noticed the Deadfish release of Ep 4 seemed lower quality (more pixelated) than earlier eps. Like they dropped the video bitrate or something. Most noticeble when there's lots of "sparklies" (or missiles!) on screen.- 285 replies

So it seems few people like the Anubis-head? I love it. Though I also seem to be one of the few who likes the head on Messer's -31.

13 or 4? I'm tempted to do 4, but 13 is so much better-known.

I had FP NotWeirdWolf on pre-order, but cancelled it. Snout is ridiculously long, and the colors are all wrong----which is strange, as FP/MT has the best paint and color matching of ANY toy company. Hasbro's has perfect colors (wish their Triggerhappy did) and a much better wolf head.- 17649 replies

Ok, just a quick overview from last night (it's hard to take good pics at night under CFL's): I tried to give an impression of the paint job and the many small markings tampo'd on. A single piece of one of the intakes has more printing than my entire Arcadia -19 I think... Bottom pic, note the tailfins have each RWR/light painted---white, red, silver.

I hope there's at least one repaint of the commander-type. Actual pure black with gold would be nice.

As I said---I've got *a* 1/144 Tomytech Gimix series kit. It's just not a valk. They have planes from real-world, games, and anime.

G1 Triggerhappy was so simple, and has a Cybertronian alt-mode, so he's in the "hard to be massively better" category if an MP or 3P came out. Kind of like Soundwave---the G1 was already fairly "perfect"---new ones are just bigger. Sure they're better, but it's not like MP Bumblebee levels of better than the original.- 17649 replies

It seems strange but true, but the "Ace Combat effect" seems to work in real life: Nowadays, it's not the airframe/engines, it's the avionics/weapons. Give me an F-8 with AESA, ASRAAM, and Meteor, and I'll happily go up against a Gripen wielding AIM-9J's...
