  1. Yeah, that's one heck of a weird failure--engine won't die! They're lucky it was on the same side as the failed one, and the exploded one wasn't outboard. If an outboard failed and the opposing outboard was stuck at a high setting---that is BAD, many a crash from similar situations on 4-engine airliners. (that would cause both extreme yaw and slideslip and some proverse roll)
  2. Qantas A380 incident report summary: http://blogs.crikey.com.au/planetalking/2010/12/03/incredible-insights-into-the-saving-of-qf32-revealed-in-the-atsb-preliminary-report/ Reminds me a LOT of the first serious 747 incident (PAA, SFO), in that there were multiple failures across all systems, a long hold off-shore to figure out what still worked and what could be done, and overall being pretty close to losing the plane if anything else had gone wrong. QF still says they'll fix it, and everyone knows Qantas will spend more than what the plane's worth to make it happen, but I still wonder if even Airbus can fix it, and if it could be recertified as fit to carry passengers again. A penetrated front spar is probably the single worst structural damage that a plane can sustain. In many planes, it's fatal. (airliners are technically required to survive it, but it's rarely proven--and half the time, despite all tests and calculations saying it can---they don't) First they have to get it fixed up enough just to fly it back to Toulouse. PS--not sure if I posted this before, but details of the damage: http://blogs.crikey.com.au/planetalking/2010/11/17/the-anatomy-of-the-airbus-a380-qf32-near-disaster/ The size of the A380 skews your sense of scale--the "little bulletholes" are the size of your fist, the bigger holes are the size of you.
  3. Do what I do---if the preview shows that Padme or Jar-Jar or "Padme's blonde sister" will be the focus---skip it. It's supposed to be CLONE wars. Not senatorial debates...
  4. I don't personally own one, but people I respect/trust say it's along the lines of the best airliner kit ever. Same for their 763. Of course, painting the house color scheme is quite a task...
  5. While Zvezda kits are hit-and-miss, it's really more of a "is it truly new, or a modified/copied version of a previous kit". The all-new ones are pretty much universally good. And I'm pretty sure there's no other PAK-FA kit to copy from...
  6. I keep passing on Terradive due to paint scheme. ANY repaint will be better. (well, except neon yellow and pink maybe, but they haven't done that since G2)
  7. Gah, lost my reply. Shorter version: Reg edit plus DPI changed the "master" font (it may technically be called the system font). Trust me, it is NOT alterable through normal means. Search the registry for "FontSubstitutes". The MS Shell Dlg ones. Lowering the resolution makes everything look awful, tried it briefly.
  8. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 1 THE WALKING DEAD---Frank Darabont has fired Season 1's writing team and will replace them with freelance writers. Executive producer Charles Eglee was also fired. Darabont wrote Season 1's first two episodes and co-wrote the other four.
  9. Rant: Why do so many websites have buttons and tabs that only line up right if you use itty-bitty text? This is especially prevalent at major retailer's sites---they'll have a long string of categories to click on, but unless you go to 4pt font they don't all fit/showup/overlap. Yes, I could turn off "ingore specified text size" but it seems every site specifies teeny-tiny text. (including this one) Basically, you can either have text big enough to easily read, or text that works with the little buttons everywhere. Not both. (this issue has plagued every monitor res and size combo I've ever seen)
  10. "ClearType" was a major breakthrough in clarity. Also, using "inverse" logic seemed to help (it is an MS OS afterall). Instead of trying to increase the size of the fonts (which XP won't allow a change in the "master" one, even through the registry), I intentionally massively over-scaled the font DPI. Now I'm tweaking individual fonts smaller. This has the overall effect of making the smallest text larger, without making the larger stuff huge. Monitor---XP didn't recognize it specifically, but I found a driver and calibration profile on the disc it came with. Made no difference, other than XP now says "ZR22w" instead of "compliant display device".
  11. Well, I finally got a new monitor (as the old one had only days left I think)---blind-buy based on reviews and youtube videos. HP ZR22w. I don't really game and viewing angle is hyper-important to me, and this is one of the few affordable S-IPS monitors out there. (I truly despise TN's viewing angle, response rate be damned) Font question: I've adjusted just about everything to look ok now, but one of the main/master/default Win XP settings seems locked. Specifically, stuff like the "Display Properties" window---everything and everything about Window's own windows seems locked. Buttons, tabs, words---they're all still the tiny default size. Most anything that comes up via the Control Panel menu is like this. As well as MSIE dialog boxes "48 secs remaining, saving to C:\etc"---can't change it from standard. Even adjusting dpi has no effect. Is there a "master" Win XP font setting somewhere? Willing to hack registry if need be. Found a pic: http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger/3709/485/1600/Windows%20XP%20Fonts.jpg Anything like that. That's the default typeface and size---and nothing seems to alter it.
  12. I presume the Navy standard engine crate is akin to a cargo LD3----so incredibly standardized and common, that everything is designed to accomodate it and only it, that you really can't change things, not without changing every other thing that interacts with it.
  13. Of course, it's all rather moot in the first place, being a SINGLE ENGINE Navy plane---you won't need spares for engine failures, as the plane likely won't make it back in one piece.
  14. F-35 bad news (is there any other kind?): The US Navy can't figure out how to get replacement engines to carriers. Won't fit in a C-2 nor V-22, and can't be unloaded during UNREP. http://www.navytimes.com/news/2010/11/navy-jsf-engine-too-big-112910w/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
  15. It's nigh-impossible to hit 60 on a single new game+, you have to plot every encounter, use every trick like getting out of the Mako etc and may just BARELY get it during the final battle. Many people (including me) can hit 58, 59----but 60? Usually takes another half-game or so, due to how the exp scales.
  16. You can change everything but gender at the start of ME2.
  17. No less than 3 sources here: http://www.tfw2005.com/boards/transformers-prime-discussion/344344-anyone-posting-episodes-youtube-8.html
  18. I'm amazed I haven't been able to find the eps anywhere yet. TF:Prime was super-easy to find.
  19. Quasi-TF news: The X-34 may fly again: http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2010/11/grounded-nasa-space-plane-poised-for-comeback/ Hmmn, may lead to new paint schemes for FP...
  20. Area/load-wise, the Sv-51 is much more of a low-alt striker. Wing loading is highly influential in how a plane flies at low altitude. The F-15E has amazing electronics etc, but it still sucks aerodynamically for the role---I think former F-111 pilots still complain about it. The F-111, Tornado, etc can still outfly most any other plane ever built in their element due to their skinny, highly-loaded wings. Every delta-winged plane ever sucks in this category. (when's the last time you saw a low-alt strike by a delta?)
  21. Thought I had: Early on, it seemed every other ep was Chloe using the swapping-stones to visit her mom. Eli's mom recently got to visit him as a "life-saving" one time thing. So why haven't they allowed Chloe's mom to come on board to see her one last time? Does her mom even know what's going on?
  22. The F-22 that recently crashed was 06-4125, the 525th commander's plane, and my personal fave F-22. In other news, the last Harrier flew off the Ark Royal. The Royal Naval will now have no fixed-wing capability until the F-35 is in service.
  23. The first promo pic for the next ep is a hell of a spoiler---unless I'm remembering the end of a recent episode wrong... http://stargate.mgm.com/view/content/2531/index.html
  24. Liked the ep much more than I thought I would, but they really need to hurry up with Chloe--mutate her all the way already or whatever, stop wasting the audience/actresses's time with 400 scenes of her sitting in her room, doodling equations, and being visited once per ep.
