Aircraft Super Thread Mk.VII
David Hingtgen replied to David Hingtgen's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
I've always found it interesting that SAAB/Volvo always seem to use upgraded versions of US engines, that are superior in every way---yet the US never uses those upgraded versions in turn. (or if they do, long after every other user and export version does) I'd guess "not invented here" is the only real reason. (or really---"we invented it, but we can't validate their upgrades and let them show us up that they made a better version of our own engine" PS----China has a "new" helicopter. Apparently it's called the Z-20. Yup, a totally new, home-grown, innovative design. -
He did specify VF-19*A*. And the A-model actually is the same as the YF (darn near), so that's a much more valid and less-asked question. Now if he'd said VF-19F or something we'd have to type out the laundry list of changes. (that, or just say "everything was changed but the landing gear")

Printed LEGOs are a rare treat now. Many sets look great on the box, but that's because lots of stripes etc are giant stickers, and the actual "bare" set is very bland.

Legs are too fat and too far apart. They look "tacked on" and not an integrated part of fighter mode. Reminds me of most Transformer™ toys that way. Fuselage (mainly glove area) is too wide. -

For me, SAL from HLJ is from 10 days to a month. USUALLY around 2 weeks. I only do it for cheap things, like small Gundam kits etc. Would never ship a valk or Masterpiece Transformer etc that way.

They can, but even the Super Hornet still always needs extra fuel tanks. Seeing the center pylon used for anything but fuel is rare. Weight/G-loading always means the centerline pylon is the #1 preferred place to load fuel tanks. -
This always bugged me on my 2.0 Roy. I assume they made the instrument panel black now, like every real and sci-fi aircraft ever? Anyone got a pic?

Yup, I've got that issue too at times lately, pretty sure it's an IE thing. -

No, that was NECIO's digibash of how many people thought FP should have done it (that's how it was in G1---the car undersides were the front of the legs). You'll note he also swapped the colors around, so that the Ferrari is Wildrider (as it should have been IMHO).- 9148 replies

Kinda what my guess was. Laser is more accurate, but can't be used in bad conditions. I envision it more as a laser-guided bomb, with a less-accurate but usable GPS mode in case of bad weather. -

A single 1000lb JDAM seems like a waste. The SDB+AMRAAM options are much better IMHO. Wait a minute---"Laser JDAM"? WTF is that? That kinda goes against the definition of JDAM. Paveway=Laser. JDAM=GPS PS---where's the 8x AIM-9X option? Seriously, want an Itano circus... -

Yup. Though that's an "actual KO release", and not a one-off that someone custom-painted gold. Really, they should sell the wheels separately, as gold-wheel Countaches are famous... More thrust, a lot more fuel, more weapons stations, AESA radar. Really superior in every way. Physically the same dimensions/shape though. Just lots of improvements/rearranging to achieve it. Awesome flight-deck ops video---best I've ever seen for actually having a plane engage the catapult, hold-back, etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?e-V0dKwyu6E And of course, everything's better when the Jolly Rogers are featured. :::edit::: Why won't it embed? I tried every variation of the link I can think of. -

Just watched the trailer---and it spoils EVERYTHING. Suggest not watching it if you think you may see the movie. (I *loved* the first, and will certainly watch the second--but now it's already been kinda ruined by the trailer)- 28 replies

4-color splinter-camo makes many people think twice about actually building one. (well, there's always the plain grey, but Viggen camo is iconic) -

Pointless and awesome are often one and the same. Most "cool" features have little practical purpose. I mean, if I had a private jet----it would so look like Tintin's. We all know the Lambo Countach's spoiler was an expensive option that added weight and drag---but dang did it look cool with it. -

Still pointless though, as it had to be----it was modified from an existing fixed-wing design. It was considered so pointless that for years it was believed it never went into production. It did of course, but everyone still asked "why?" Never said it wasn't realistic, said it was pointless. The time/effort/expense/weight put into making the tips move a bit, could have been much better spent in other areas with notable gains---or on a different aircraft. -
