The computer and electronics super geek thread
David Hingtgen replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Negatives? I've used 2003 for 12 years----not going to pay 12x $99. Want to be able to use it on a future/upgraded PC---not possible with the non-sub version. It's one and only once. Don't like it to demand online/updates----half the time I update my Office stuff is because the net's down. "Ribbon" menu. I still despise any icon (vs word)-based interface. Especially for things with zillions of options like Office has. -

So, been using MS Office 2003 forever---but need new copy for new PC. Office 2013 seems to have a zillion negatives. Want to keep using old DOC and XLS files I've had forever, and have been updating some for literally half my life. Though I could finagle a way to get 2003 off the old PC, it can't read XLSX, which is becoming increasingly common. So---been looking at "free alternatives". Top 2 seem to be OpenOffice, and LibreOffice. Opinions? Do not want cloud-base/googleDocs etc. Want a purely (or close to it) offline option. Read that Kingsoft's WPS Office 10 free is a nigh-clone of Office 2003---but when their site touts the spellchecker, but the page itself has obvious typos---I wonder about their professionalism. (their forum gives me a bad vibe, too) -

DX Chogokin VF-27ß Lucifer Mass Production and Grace Custom
David Hingtgen replied to IXTL's topic in Toys
For those that own both: the main "pale" striping/marking color. Is it different on the new one? V1 used the same very pale lavender as Brera's, which almost looked grey, but was in fact purple. The Hase kit used actual grey for the stripes and I believe it should be that way. In short---Bandai used the exact same tampo printing color for Grace's, as Brera's, and that's wrong I think. On the V1, at least.- 616 replies

I cancelled mine---I'm very low on money due to moving to a new town, it's not THAT much better than the old one, and I still see no hint at all of offering super parts for this version. Plus we still don't know about "matching greens" or the exact modexes, etc.- 616 replies

Hmmm, I'm really thinking about canceling now----it's just not THAT much better than the original (and no hint of super parts yet) and the -27 is still just a -25 rehash like the -29 is. It feels like I have too many of the same basic valk. But then I may be perma-banned from N-Y if I do.- 616 replies

That TC is still not what I was hoping for at all----I want G1 toy colors on the MP-11 mold. So sick of 90% of TC's being light/medium blue. Yes, toon and toy were very different----but "in the middle" isn't right for either. And they almost never do dark. It's always toon, or "toon-hybrid" colors. Never the awesome sapphire metallic toy colors.- 16711 replies

The Unlicensed Third Party Transformers Thread
David Hingtgen replied to slaginpit's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Their Trypticon is both SD, and looks more like a Gojulas/Genosaurer hybrid than a TF. As I said at TFW---I want my TFs to look like TFs, not Zoids or Gundams or EVA or any other mecha. As we've seen from the zillion 3P Dinobots, you can absolutely make robo-dinos that don't look just like Zoids. You can't use the "well, all robot dinos are going to end up looking like Zoids" argument when 3P is providing a new counterexample every day. It's like saying all transforming jet mecha have the same style, which I don't even need to say anything further at this forum.- 9146 replies

You want to sell off a bunch of TF's at once? Transformerland.com I've sold to there several times. Best option for "they're not worth the time/effort to sell individually" but worth too much to just give them all away.- 16711 replies

To make it easy to spot leaks and cracks. A pristine gloss white surface will make any "anomalies" very visible.

Re: Canard angle. Is it something that just a little bit of filing/carving "right above their pivot point" would allow them to angle upwards more, without affecting their looks/stability? Or is it complicated and any alteration to the plastic/hole would likely cause issues?
-
I've mentioned that----no one really gets the -19's gear right, despite it having very detailed drawings from the beginning. I think it's part of the reason almost no -19 "looks right" sitting on the ground, with a weird stance/tilt---because the landing gear's wrong. And you always get that "gear door touching the wheel" problem---again, because the gear's wrong.

Said it years ago, will say it again: Australia was smart, saw how the F-35 program was going, and decided to get really high-end uber-spec'd Super Hornets instead. Cheap, good, proven and already in service. Their Super Hornets are better than any in the U.S. Fleet, and have many features that the F-35 touts. ASRAAM capability alone gives it a boost to close-in fighting, and it's got every sensor you can think of plus a nice AESA radar IIRC. -

Grace 3.0? Hmmmn--in the TV series, both green VF-27's were destroyed, and Grace died on the Vajra planet. Movie was rather different. Which version of Frontier's events will be "canon" for Delta?- 2715 replies

Props for doing VF-51, their post-Phantom existence is often glossed over/forgotten.

Bruticus is probably the one combiner I'd most want Takara to do, vs 3P. Why? They are hell-bent on toon-accuracy. Bruticus works so much better in toon form than toy form. Why? Chest plate. On the original toy, it's a big silver piece that does nothing else. But in the toon---BlastOff splits in half, with his wings and upper fuselage forming the chestplate, and the rest of him forming the right arm. It even helps with the over-discussed "scale" issue----by splitting up his mass, he can actually be a rather large shuttle toy, yet still scale with the others in combined form. He would be larger than all the other limbs in vehicle mode, possibly rivalling or even exceeding Onslaught, but it wouldn't be an issue if half his mass makes up the combined torso's front half. (robot mode may cause some issues, but we've seen Takara practically mass-shift MP bots before) Yet no 3P company has tried to do the "solves so many problems, and looks so cool" toon version of Bruticus----they all follow the toy. Normally I'm all for toy-accurate in most things (except for S3 characters' coloring, then it's toon all the way). But for Bruticus? Toon-accurate transformation please, with half of BlastOff for the chestplate.- 16711 replies
