It would seem to me that they knew of the Alien. Ash was given Special Order 937 to seek and investigate the planet for any life form hostile or otherwise. I copy the layer, use the motion blur filter on the lower layer (make sure the angle is right) and adjust the opacity on the layer. that's it!!!
