Novice styrene/foam board builder looking for tips
EXO replied to Iceblue106's topic in The Workshop!
Hmmm... Stryrene is relatively easy to work with, but with anything there's advanced techniques than can be difficult also. But mostly it's simple. First off is using a styrene solvent cement. It looks like water and comes in a bottle with a brush. It'll melt the plastic and bond it with another piece. It's very effective and you don't need to use a lot. Careful though, use it in a room with good ventilation and don't breathe in the fumes and for goodness sakes never ever drink it... lol. You can't use the solvent for really thin sheets, it'll either wrinkle it up or dissolve it. Superglue will adhere it to other surfaces. Cutting Styrene is pretty easy also. Depending on the thickness, most of the time you just need to score it and then you can break it or even use a scissor sometimes. You can sand it pretty easily. You can also put thicker parts in hot water (faucet water works sometimes) to soften it up to bend it into shape. It's easy to clean. Try to use thin sheets to detail stuff and only use the thicker sheets for structures. Cutting the thicker stuff is sometimes more difficult if you don't have the proper equipment. Its pretty simple to paint. It's waterproof and non-porous, so it's ideal for recasting. That's pretty much the elementary stuff I can think of, I'm sure others can give you more tips. -

Sorry I haven't replied. I just got the "bonus figure" today so hopefully I can have a pic of the whole set tomorrow! I'll put more info as soon as I can show it off. Thanks!

Everything about toys were cooler back then. Especially the old JCPenney catalogs and the dioramas they had.

Maybe saying that the breakthru weren't onscreen was an understatement, I just meant that a lot of what's onscreen was indiscernible as CG and people will look right over it and probably won't be impressed. But a lot of the tech breakthrus are also in either 3D technology or behind the scene stuff. Saw it again... this time I saw it at the Irvine spectrum.... It's funny but the cheap glasses turned out better for me as far as seeing it in 3D. I finally saw everything flying around me. While it's a cool feature, I really wouldnt want to see everything in 3D and certainly not want to deal with it at home. I enjoyed it as much maybe even more this time. I'm just so into the action and scenery and the way it just transports you into a whole other world and yet you get to fill up on the whole mech stuff without having to be bothered by the Micheal Bay nonesense and ugly robots. I'll probably see it again in regular 2D next time. In comparison to Final Fantasy: SWI, it's probably what I expected to see back then but that movie was total fail. Not only was the tech not ready but man... I'm surprised no one cried derivative back then when that one was the real Cameron ripoff. I used to think if they didn't make it an Aliens ripoff then maybe it would have been watchable, then I saw Advent Children and thought that I was wrong... it was still pretty bad.
-
A lot of the breaktrhu wasn't really woth the visuals as far as the audience can see. I don't think they should have touted it as such. A lot of it was motion capture during shooting. New 3D shooting tech... I think cameron is just an over eager geek tech that thinks people will know what was done.

yeah this is where you start to post senseless jokes to pretend to keep up with the thread...
-
Are you really trying to get out of it? Earlier in this thread there's a guy that posted pictures to show that he owned it and let me quote you "i can't believe that there were that many stupid people that shelled out $2000+ for this" so yeah you pretty called someone on the thread stupid. Why don't you be the guy you pretend to be and man up, so you can just admit to being low self esteem troll prostitute-loving troll that you are.
-
You're useless retort pretty much says it all.
-
I'm sure it was a joke not meant to offend anyone... again with the grudges... maybe you can't get over it. And it has totally nothing to do with anything you done in the present... do yourself a favor and post on a forum that you're actually interested in since you're to good for collecting toys.
-
That doesn't even make sense. You're making up random activities and comparing them to the experience of watching a movie just so watching the movie would sound like a waste of time. That's like if I say... hey, why don't people go serve soup at skid row instead of sitting around for 3 hours watching bright lights... all of a sudden spending time with bums sound a lot better than watching a family event movie. And this is from a guy that spent countless hours watching a movie just so he can watch blue people hump trees and making up some weird agenda for people to see that they shouldn't like a movie (and what a fine way to make use of your so called valuable time that is). I'm probably someone that enjoyed this movie more than anyone else here and by coincidence I probably spent more time walking thru forests because I had to scout a location requiring that type of backdrop, so I can tell you that your point sucks.... again!

You know this is the part where I tell you that you're offensive and out of line. And then you PM me for always singling you out. The people that bought this have more right to be on this board than you because they're actually interested in Macross stuff instead of insulting people. Maybe you do it because you have the need to feel better than yourself. You're a troll and you always have been and I'll be expecting more idiotic posts from you if this doesn't put you into hiding while you lick your wounds like you always do. Then you come back and say "Oh I don't collect toys anymore because they don't interest me"... then what the hell are you doing on these boards? I could easily give you the banhammer for trolling here but I think I enjoy pointing out how useless you are.

I think the general, and I mean general as in average, not specific people on this thread has either been that they enjoyed the movie a lot or enjoyed it enough the one time they saw it. A few complaints but never anyone that truly hated it. It's funny that the one member here that truly hated it never really gave it a chance to see it in the environment that it's meant to be seen in or put in the the time to watch it properly. It's just a downloaded file that can be walked away from, but obsessed enough with the film that they probably have the most posts on this thread. lol.
-
Whatever... just paint it!!! lol... I'm not sure how many of these kits have been painted or if any beyond the ones that were sold painted.
-
yeah that's why you have to see it "again and again". I guess the tree humping fetish justifies repeated viewing.

Not bad for a movie that this site dislikes...

sculpted in putty, pictured are resin.

I'll post painted samples tomorrow.

Work has slowed some so I thought it'd be the perfect time to get some dream projects out of the way starting with this. I was working on 1/48 figures but then decided to make 1/60 figures so I can span them across the different series. Send me a PM if interested. Set 1: Set 2: Set 3: SET 4:

Essentially it's comic book reboot of the SDF:M/DYRL story. It updates but yet keeps the spirit of the original... they should really animate it, it's ubercool!
