Robotech Academy - You want a new Robotech series...?
azrael replied to Einherjar's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
That's why people should be looking at other KS-projects and ask why are those groups asking for less. Most of those projects are going up on Youtube with DVD/Blu-ray as the afterthought if they get get more money and it turns out well. People should be asking what other distribution methods they are looking at. Let's see what happens at SDCC. This project probably started around May/June. This is something that people should be asking. When Chris Roberts opened up Star Citizen, we had screenshots already. Now we have alpha videos of gameplay and it's looking good and on-track. If HG is going to give the audience another Powerpoint slideshow with the same slides from AX2014, donors better say something.- 2025 replies

Robotech Academy - You want a new Robotech series...?
azrael replied to Einherjar's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
You want an itemized breakdown of the costs? That's going to be rough as much of it is considered labor. There's no monetary amount for designing mecha. You pay a guy to draw, edit, or compose noise for stuff. They're suppose to work on that project. That doesn't count additional costs (like you paid me for this, but I have additional fees that I'm charging to you because that stuff went toward your work, etc.) Also, I'd throw a contract at HG if I donated, like a research grant. Cuz KS funds just say that I'm donating to your project, how you spend that money on your project is up to you. They're suppose to be honest and use it toward the project but it's like a discretionary fund. I could say X-amount went to administrative costs. I needed a new car which I used to drive my ass to the post office to FedEx a letter for this project.- 2025 replies

So they're assuming the show will get picked up for an entire series? I can't begin to site the numerous examples where that thought can go wrong. Hell, every show that we see on TV is constantly on a sink-or-swim cycle. Shows have been cancelled because the network didn't want it. Jeebus, look at Community. A couple of years ago I was watching Green Lantern: The Animated Series and it was a pretty good show. Cartoon Network killed it after a season (1 season split into 2 parts, 26 episodes total). And what distribution model are they going for? Netflix? iTunes? Dear god, Youtube? Some method for other countries that we don't use in the USA? You donors should be poking at them for info to be sure they have a solid plan for the what-if.- 2025 replies

i.e., You, the fans, get to fund our risk because we didn't want to spend on Carl's idea. So it's Carl's fault if it fails and the fans fault for trying it. Oh and here's one of many cautionary tales: Kickstarter project spent $3.5M to finish a working prototype—and ended in disaster ~ A login-managing USB key won awards, was covered everywhere, never materialized.(Ars Technica)- 2025 replies

They are saying July 2015. Most KS projects have a "When we're done" due date. Look at that potato-salad-KS. Well, good for Creavision. They're getting money for their fanart now. Go from no-one to being hired by the people that almost-sued you. And it looks like this KS got a boost from South America.- 2025 replies

Don't know. That's another question for HG to ask on KS or at SDCC. One thing I'm starting to see on their KS page is "Where's HG?" and "The only place they want to answer questions is on their own forum." I don't know if anyone has tried to e-mail them but their KS feedback page is lacking in presence. I expect they're gonna get a lot more questions and more press at SDCC. Whether or not they will be answered or if SDCC will make a significant difference in funding is a question all by themselves.- 2025 replies

Since Tatsunoko owns Southern Cross and Mospeada, they can reproduce those designs from those 2 shows. They cannot use Macross designs in any new animated feature, only merchandising. They're also trying to attract nostalgic people with the Kickstarter. Which is why I said ask questions. Bring up their past works. Let other people know what they've done before and let people decide if they want to actually donate to this. People here know what it might look like, but others do not.- 2025 replies

Asking questions here is 100% useless. We do not have the answers for you. These are questions backers should be asking HG's staff on Kickstarter, the RT homepage, Facebook, etc. And they would be silly not to, especially if they put in a pledge. I'm just going to lock the thread when I see them, whenever they'll come. They can stay (unless they broke some other rule). But if any user donated to this, didn't ask about what they are donating to, then come here to complain when they feel they got a raw deal, that's not our problem. Their CVs are available if you want to know what they've done. It's like a job interview or a business proposal meeting. You better know what you're getting into before you jump in.- 2025 replies

Then that will only prove that RT cannot stand on its own 2 feet and that all the bullshit they've been saying about the franchise is nothing but bullshit. They need RT to stand away from Macross if they want it to survive. I've said it over many years and in many threads: They need to make your own damn IP and get away from Macross. No one at those panels has ever called them out on it and so far, their attempts haven't earned them anything but one-shot releases. If people want to throw money at this, be my guest. But they need to be aware of the company who is doing this. They'll sue anyone, a big company like Hasbro to a small company in another country like Creavision. All they have been doing is releasing little things every 5 years to keep up their trademarks. If people fund this, then those people who put money into the pot better start asking questions and keep one eye over HG's shoulder to be sure they fulfill their end of the contract. They are spending your money on a project that may or may not work. Consider the risk. Ask questions. Kickstarter makes ordinary people into venture capitalists. Well, you better start acting like one with this project. Funny that Mr March notes Veronica Mars. Kickstarter earned them close to $6 million. Box office gross was only ~$3.5M.- 2025 replies

Well, there is a definite cost to a project. I've seen the price from $30,000 to $1M per episode of some cartoons in looking around. The Simpsons and Family Guy costs ~$2-million per episode with majority of the costs going to the voice actors and the producers. And if HG is using the same group of people they sent a C&D letter to for the VFX, then they are going overseas for the VFX, which is the norm these days. That should lower the costs, in theory. But, if an independent studio in Japan is making their own IP for $150,000 for a 40-minute animation, it should give one a few ideas of how costs differs in certain parts of the world. Now I've never seen Little Witch Academia-anime short, but you can watch it on Crunchyroll. It looks very well done for traditionally made short. Apparently, they secured enough funding to make a 2nd 20-minute episode. They went to Kickstarter to get additional funding to extended it to 40 minutes. So ~$300,000+ to cover 40-minutes of production. Their total fundraising for that second episode ended at $625,518. So ~$300,000+ for the show, and the leftover for behind-the-scenes work and commentary. If this project reaches its goal + change, and the project fails to take off after the pilot, you cannot ask for your money back. It states right there on the project page that they hope to build off this single 24-minute show. What if that doesn't happen? I'm not going to tell people how to spend their money, but they better be prepared if it doesn't come out like they wanted. If one donates to this, no matter the amount, you have a right to see their progress. You have a right to know that your money is being spent properly since you invested in this project. (Kickstarter Basics: Accountability) They posted what...10-seconds of CGI and 3-minutes of talking. You should expect something more than a few Powerpoint presentations at every convention they attend. If you invest in this project, you should be asking questions and not blindly jumping in just because it has Robotech slapped on it. Ask them questions. Kickstarter encourages it. Roy pointed out their DVD sales. Shouldn't they have enough money from merchandise? What about those other projects? It looks like the same people are in charge of this as the last few. What happened with those projects? You are allowed to ask this stuff if you want to pledge money. Looking around the interwebs, I see way too many comments about Macross. This isn't about Macross. Robotech is HG's copyright and they can do whatever they want with that. It's with their previous RT projects and releases where I would start asking questions and ranting. What happened with their last ultimate-super gold collection set of the original RT release? Why so many collection sets in the past few years? Then you can start asking about this fundraising goal and the who/what/where/why about how they plan on spending this money for 24-minutes of animation.- 2025 replies

If I read it correctly, you pay when the project is 100% funded. Once a project is funded, the money falls into the hands of the project creator. At that point, Kickstarter cannot get a refund back for you if the project fails. Looking around the web for reactions to this, I was pointed to this Kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1311401276/little-witch-academia-2 $150,000 for a 40-minute episode. The extra 500,000-extension is for audio commentary and making-of-documentary for the Blu-ray release. Compared with HG asking for $500,000 for one 24-minute pilot. Now I know there's some markup for exchange rates, licensing, and other stuff, but wow...that's a heck of a markup for 24-minutes.- 2025 replies

Robotech Academy - You want a new Robotech series...?
azrael replied to Einherjar's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
Let's play devil's advocate. So it was Carl's idea to use the interwebs to fund a new Robotech series. So if that fails, will Carl get the blame by all those rabid, silly RT fans? So Tommy will throw Carl under the bus if this fails? If this does get funded and they fail to make the delivery date, what then? It's a well known KS-projects suffer delays. For those of you guests and lurkers that were thinking of donating money, let me remind you, you are giving money away with the chance that this does not launch. This is a RISK. The same risk venture capitalists take on projects. I'm sure HG has approached networks before and most have looked at the numbers and said "Not interested". If you want your money back, Kickstarter does not issue refunds. Refunds are issued at the discretion of the project starter. The big projects on Kickstarter are working because they are actually feasible and will likely work when they launch, i.e. the risk is worth it. Those of you who actually donated to this project should be asking all tough questions. What's the plan? Who is on-board to write, direct, design, etc? How will you distribute this? If this project goes to a full series, will you approach companies for sponsors? Which companies would you look at to sponsor. By putting money into this project, you need to be checking in on them like any project sponsor. You better be checking in on them to see if your money is being well spent. Let's say this project does get off the ground, but fails after launch. Will you fans and project backers blame the producers for the failed project? Look at the track record of the production company. Robotech 3000? Didn't launch. Sequel to Shadow Chronicles? Still in development hell. Love, Live Alive was a reuse of a old production with ~5 minutes of new footage.- 2025 replies

First look at the Man of Steel from USA Today: http://www.usatoday.com/story/life/movies/2014/07/03/henry-cavill-batman-superman-movie-first-look/11310229/ Spoiler'd for size: Now it could be 'shopped but the suit looks more blue and the S-shield has more defined red and yellow areas. Oh and the "belt" looks more distinguishable than the previous which blended in with the suit too much, IMO.
