The computer and electronics super geek thread

Well, if you're using a standard office keyboard or mouse, it's just plug & play. I've used Logitech for years in the office. Never needed to use any specialized drivers. But if you want all 'dem fancy features of gaming peripherals, then you need some 'dem drivers. -

If they're using the Frostbite 3 engine, then it shouldn't be that bad. But that's because those of us who played Battlefield 4 basically beta'd the engine for the past year. We paid $60-$100 to correct all the problems DICE gave us. This is why Battlefield: Hardline hasn't had the scope of issues BF4 had when it launched. At launch, Battlefield 3 also came with a pile of issues which took a year to resolve. Hell, they're still fixing Battlefield 4. Unfortunately, many people and practically all those Youtubers gloss over the fact they DICE screwed up and we've been in a continuous beta test for the past 1.5 years of playing this game.- 6837 replies

As I mentioned, Razor products of lately have longevity issues. Around 2012 was when Deathadder problems started happening. From what I heard, it became hit or miss with lots of Deathadders. -

Even if it just shaves milliseconds or cuts memory usage by less than , say 60MB, I still do it. But that's me. Yes. But once you program the peripheral how you like it with the software, you never need to launch the software again, nor have it even installed on your computer. Hence, you can bring the peripheral anywhere without worrying about drivers needed to run the device how you want it. -

My reasoning is I hate the extra layer of software just to get something to work. I like my systems to run as few pieces of software at the user or application-layer as possible. At least the driver can run at the kernel layer. Which is why I like running without software if the device has internal memory. But the idea is if you bring your own keyboard/mouse to LAN parties or events, you don't have to worry about installing drivers on a 3rd party system. Your predefined macros and customizations are stored on the keyboard and mouse so you never have to worry and spend time doing a setup when you are away from your gaming system. It's all built in and ready to go when you get there. -

I only played Battlefield 4's single player once to unlock guns and my ears still hurt from the awful dialog and laughable gameplay. I haven't even picked up Battlefield Hardline and I hear the single player is awful. And Hardline isn't even produced by DICE (Viceral Games took the lead with DICE only providing the game engine support and name).- 6837 replies

Star Wars Battlefront teaser trailer. While part of me is giddy, the other side of me remembers that DICE is making this and I had to suffer (and still suffer) through Battlefield 4, or as I call it, "Making people pay $60 to play a beta test".- 6837 replies

Trailers can make a lousy movie look good. That's the illusion. Personally, I'm looking for a new story and feel, not A New Hope-redux. As the saying goes, nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

Nope. But like you, I've used Logitech for a while. Last mouse was a G500s. I tried Logitech's newer gaming mice offerings and hated the ergonomics. But when I was looking for a new mouse and keyboard, I looked at Razor but kept seeing the longevity of their devices of late has been lacking. I didn't want any software running in the background so having a programmable mouse with built-in memory was also a desire. I also wanted some more buttons so after looking I ended up with Roccat devices. Razor had all the necessary buttons, but nothing more which eliminated nearly all their mice to me. I didn't want a MMO mouse since I don't play MMOs so that eliminated the Naga. If I went with Razor, I would have got either a Deathadder or a Taipan. -
Yeah, definitely not liking the helmets on any of these new 'troopers.

Yes. We've known for the better part of 7...8 years. http://www.macrossworld.com/mwf/index.php?showtopic=38408 This thread is about a Macross live-action movie that is not going to happen anytime soon.

I'm reminded of Family Guy where Luke/Chris gets sucked into the tube and there's a maintenance guy in there and Luke asks if he has seen a hand and the tech says "No" and the hand is clearly visible under the tech's clothes. Regarding the ChromeTrooper and the shiny TIE Fighter pilot helmet, I feel like that's our Abrams-lens-flare.

More spoilerific TV spots. https://www.facebook.com/avengers/videos/vb.126757470715601/891974397527234/ The good thing is, it confirms the Hot Toys release of AOU War Machine Mk II. http://www.hottoys.com.hk/productDetail.php?productID=295 Thank you Whedon for bringing back War Machine. I hate the Iron Patriot-paint scheme.- 398 replies

The more I see of the new Stormtrooper design, the less I'm liking. Less about the suit and more about the helmet. It's great that the stuntman might actually be able to see with the bigger eyes but the grill-mouth-that-looked-like-teeth of olde made them look more menacing. And my opinion of the cross-guard lightsaber is even less spectacular than before with where he's gripping the thing. Now you're begging to cut yourself with that thing.

Avengers: Age of Ultron, in theaters May 1, 2015
azrael replied to azrael's topic in Anime or Science Fiction
The Hollywood premiere was yesterday and I'm starting to see spoilers floating around. Opening dates for Europe and Asia are on April 22 and April 23. If you are considering avoiding spoilers in all shapes or forms, I would think quickly about going dark because spoilers will be in full force by this time next week.- 398 replies

Might as well avoid the 'Net as well. They're posting movie clips left and right. You could probably string the whole movie together from the TV spots and clips being posted.- 398 replies

In case you haven't gotten that far yet Yeah, the rest of the suit is OK, probably doesn't help with the dark atmosphere. But the head piece....It reminds me of Cap's 1st Avengers movie suit. Out of all the Cap. America suits in the MCU, I hated the 1st Avengers movie suit the most. And this DD suit reminds me of it. But that distinct eyebrow and face line just looks awful. I would have preferred a single piece without any big fat line separating the eyebrow from the rest of the head piece.

The leak forced their hand. (Spoiler'd for size) I don't like head piece. I liked how Afleck's masked looked in the movie over this head piece. Since the rest of the suit won't appear till the end, I can't comment, but it feels a bit too armory. Maybe my opinion will change. But the head piece....I don't like it.

2) Usually we use the rear fan as an exhaust because heat rises and since it is conveniently placed at the same level as the CPU fan so makes for a nice pulling fan; it pulls the heated air away from the CPU fan. I'd recommend as Nekko mentioned, mount the CPU fan so that it's blowing in the same direction as the rear intake (either mount it on the other side of the heatsink or reverse the direction so that air is flowing in 1 direction.) -
Remember Kiss Dum? People said the same thing about those mechs. He just has this style.

Mike is correct. When Windows installs, it will put itself into the root directory of the drive and generate all appropriate folders from the root directory. You can tell it to put itself on your D-drive, but it will still place itself in the root directory of the drive/partition (D:\Windows, D:\Program Files or C:\Windows, C:\Program Files). These days, I see particular drive letters being needed by certain drives as less of an issue as long as I'm not making drastic changes that would necessitate me doing a bunch of path remaps. I usually stick to the default paths for most of my apps (C:\Windows\, C:\Program Files\, C:\Program Files (x86)\, etc.). Only when I'm installing to a different drive/partition, do I use a different path. But I still make it easy on myself and just change the drive letter, not the whole path (prevents me from accidentally misspelling a path). For example, let's say WoW wants to install itself in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Blizzard\World of Warcraft\" and I want to install on my D-drive. I just change the letter from C to D (i.e. "D:\Program Files (x86)\Blizzard\World of Warcraft\"). It's much less complicated than trying to remember something like "D:\Games\MMPORPG\World of Warcraft" and hoping I spelled it right or remembered if there was a space-character in directory names. Plus, if I ever need to remap the directory, I just change 1 letter. -

technoblue is correct. There is no standard for where saved games or player profiles go. Only within the past 10 years have developers started to place those files into a directory other than <install directory>\<game directory>. Some use My Documents, My Saved Games, Appdata, etc. But there isn't really a standard. As we've all mentioned, play to the strengths of the drives. SSDs are fast, so place the most used files onto the SSD. What's constantly accessed? The OS, drivers, general apps (web browsers, security software, day-to-day applications) or apps like Photoshop, that would benefit from the speed of a SSD when loading. The HDD has lots of room, so use that as your storage and for stuff you access less (like games).
